(Edited Title:) Writer thinks Zappe is winning the QB "battle"?

Im talking about the likelihood as a backup QB that a team will come after him to make him their starter. It rarely happens.
IF Mac gets hurt and he plays well again you might change your tune. Jimmy G showed he was a good back-up and the 49ers payed handsomely for his services it can happen again.

I agree - I don't think anyone would throw a lot at getting him. But I do think if he was a free agent, someone would want him. Or if Mac ends up sticking, I don't think Bill will have much trouble finding a suitor.

New Orleans and San Diego did that for Drew Brees they're a lot of 6'1 QB's in the League Hurts - Purdy and Mayfield just to name a few.

For most of his career, Drew Brees had the best o-lines in the league. The Saints always had the highest or one of the highest paid o-lines in the league. The Patriots don't even know for sure who will be starting at either tackle position.

And are you going to use Baker Mayfield as an example of a QB who is 6'1" as a way to talk up Zappe? The guy has been in the league for five season and he is going on his fourth team.

As for Purdy, he is more mobile than Zappe (although neither are all that mobile) and has a monster o-line to pair with McCaffrey, Samuel, and Kittle - and Shanahan who can make virtually any QB a stud.

But you are giving three examples with one being a complete bust and turnover machine. Probably because he doesn't see the entire field.

EDIT: I didn't see you had Hurts there too. Mobile QBs like Hurts cannot be compared to pocket passers. We have seen

FWIW, Bedard was on the air saying that Zappe has noticeably having issues seeing over the line and having to move around to get passing lanes to throw and he has double the sacks as Jones. He said it was the same thing he saw in the second half of the Bears game. He did say the caveat that Zappe had worse o-lines.
And worse WRs.

Worse grass too. Crabgrass everywhere while Mac plays on fescue.

Oh boy I totally forgot about Kittle *face palm*???.

I think he has shown enough to be wanted as a backup.
Most backups at some point get the chance to show if they could be a starter.

Any player that shows more than we know would make anyone “change their tune”. I can only talk about where we are now.
If you think Zappe 2023 is regarded the same as Garoppolo 2017 im
really not sure what to say to that other than you would be alone in that view.

I get it - I downplay it too but Zappe already had that chance and has shown he can. Somebody else would either bring him in to compete (if it was against like competition) and I think he'd potentially emerge in that situation. Again, some not so great names out there.

Agree. Garoppolo was far more polished and that's part of the reason why he commanded more, along with his original draft selection.

It's lonely at the top.

You don't think having an offense that virtually every QB who has been under center with a talented cast is the same as this cast.

BTW, Kittle was a second team All Pro last year.

I’m curious which current teams do you think that he would be in a real competition to start on right now if he were there.

It's obviously limited at this point, but I'd say Tampa (I think he's better than Mayfield), Atlanta (I think he's better than Heineke), and Arizona (if they're done with Kyler Murray because I think Zappe is better than McCoy). But otherwise, it's definitely crowded elsewhere as I looked at various rosters.

I think if the conversation had started back in March (and he had been a free agent), I think he would have been potentially ahead of some of the other names out there given how little he would have cost and the upside he's shown.

Tampa has trask competing with mayfield, he was the guy they chose 2 rounds earlier in the same draft.
Atlanta has Ridder who they chose a round earlier and has played 4 games for them.
Arizona wouldn’t replace Murray with Zappe.

I don’t know what would have been different in march, the trans without QBs drafted the guy they wanted.

The way I see it Zappes play last year amounts to “looks like a decent 4th round pick” not “wow how did we mid this guy he’s great”

Murray may not be ready by the start of the season, which is why I included that one (I do think Zappe is better than McCoy). But it was interesting looking around the league. Not many teams really without a couple of O.K. guys on their roster currently, which is unusual.

Jimmy G could have been a great, top 10 knocking on the door of top 5, QB in this league if he wasn't so injury prone... that's his only real knock... He was pro ready from the get go

I’d call Az a backup playing because of injury.

This would be an interesting exercise. Where would you rank Zappe among QB2s.

I'd put him in the top third. Not a lot of "great" backups out there currently, given a lot of the shake ups in recent years. That in and of itself has been interesting when you look at how a lot of guys who have risen and fallen.

I'd say Zappe's probably better than a high percentage of the #2s out there right now. Again, Taylor Heineke is the guy who keeps popping in my head there. But without looking at every name, aside from who I mentioned, I'm not sure who else would rank ahead of him.
