Agreed. And it falls on BB as well.
Damn right it falls on BB.
I have ?never criticized BB before- until the Matty P/Judge clown show last year.
I still believe he's the goat. I'm grateful for all he's done.
But what he did last year goes against everything he's ever stood for.
I dont speculate. Don't know why he did such a lame brained dumbass thing and why he never attempted to fix it when it was obvious to even the lunch ladies at Foxborough High that it wasn't working.
I don't care why. It happened. It still pisses me off. It was so out of character for Bill.
What we don't know is how he has addressed this behind closed doors to the players in particular. He screwed all of them over even more than he screwed us. Careers could've been ruined. I have to believe he gave them some kind of apology.
More importantly, he has fixed the situation. But it remains an ugly stain on an incredible career.

I think it was a toxic ****tail of arrogance, cronyism, and disrespect for coaching offenses.

Hopefully he's learned the lesson that his antics have endangered his legacy.

Yup. He really did Mac, Zappe and the rest of the team dirty.

Credit to our players for not demanding a trade. I don’t think I’d have that kind of restraint.

If you have to play make believe to make your point, then you have a weak point

So what you’re saying is that the Patriots had bad coaching last year but the general idea is that Jones will improve this year with some good coaching.

That’s actually kinda the textbook definition of “developmental player”.

Of course, all this excuse making ignores the fact that if the coaching was so atrocious that it hurt the QB’s performance, then Zappe is definitely starting QB caliber.

LOL! Ok, I will deal with facts.

Last year’s offensive coaching staff was easily the worst offensive coaching staff for the Patriots in my life and probably in Patriots history. It may be one of the worst in NFL history. If Belichick was any other coach, he would have been fired for putting the offense in Patricia’s hands.

More facts, Mac Jones finished second in OROY voting. The only reason he didn’t win was because Chase had a historic rookie season.

Even more facts. Mac Jones came into the league the most NFL ready of any QB the year he was drafted.

A developmental player is a player usually drafted in the later rounds who has a lot of potential, but isn’t good enough to start right way. He needs to be groomed to before he can be a full time starter. Of the first round QBs in Jones’ draft class, only Trey Lance fit in that category.

Jones had a disappointing second season, much of it out of his control. But he clearly isn’t a developmental player. His rookie season, he was an average starting QB in this league. And down the stretch last year, he was far better than people give him credit for.

Wow…. when you think about how well the rookie QB Zappe performed with that **** show coaching staff, we got something special!

Oh I was high on Jones last year at this time. That’s why his regression was so disappointing. That aside, even if we look at his rookie season, there’s plenty of room for development. Let us hope that is not the best he can do, agreed?

Really was shocking that BB either didn’t notice by the start of preseason that the coaching was not working or he did notice and chose to do nothing.

I think he knew right away it was not working. That is why they dumbed down the offense. It was for the coaches. Not the players. I just don’t think Belichick wanted to throw Patricia and Judge under the bus or admit it was a mistake.

They simplified the offense for Zappe against the two worst defenses the team played all year. And Zappe had one decent game and one great game last year. His production last year was overrated. And Jones had some good games last year too.

Almost every young player has room for improvement. A developmental player is specifically a player who has a lot raw potential, but needs to be coached up to that raw potential before they can perform. Edelman was a developmental player. It took him years before he even was ready to be a contributor on offense. He had to basically be coached to learn the position.

So is this report true or overstated?

Too short and doesn’t have a great arm. Zappe is a career backup.

This guy ^ was an inch shorter than Zappe and also had a "weak arm" according to the clueless.

Drew Brees, Russell Wilson, Doug Flutie, Sonny Jurgensen, Tua Tagovailoa, Baker Mayfield, Joe Theismann, Billy Kilmer, Len Dawson, Mike Vick, Kyler Murray, Fran Tarkenton and this year's first overall pick Bryce Young are all six feet or less... shorter than Zappe.

Do some research before sticking your foot in your mouth.

Raiders and Minnesota had worse defenses on a point-allowed-per-game basis compared to Cleveland and Carolina, and yet, not only did the Patriots score less points in those Raiders/Vikings games, they went 0-2.

Come on... with all due respect, do you know how ridiculous you sound? You are excusing Jones' poor performance by talking about how this was literally - your words here - a coaching staff that "may be one of the worst in NFL history." But with Zappe? Oh, well, "they simplified the offense for Zappe".

To talk about how much Jones will improve this year with better coaching but not afford Zappe the same assumption is quite silly.

Jones had a poor season, period. A good game here and there does nothing to change that.

You just described Mac Jones perfectly. Hopefully.

Jones played really well vs. the Vikings. The defense didn‘t. He completed 71.8% of his passes for 382 yards, 2 TDs, and no INTs. He had his head up his ass against the Raiders.

And at the time the Pats played the Browns, they were the worst defense in the league. Their defense got worlds better in the second half of the season.

Ok, they changed the offense for Zappe. They definitely took out a lot of wasn‘t working and implemented a lot more high percentage type of plays. They let him do play action under center. Something they rarely let Mac do except in the first half vs the Bills. When they let Mac do play action under center, he excelled. Except they never let him do it.

It was part of Patricia’s bonehead strategy of taking away his players best weapons. I mean the Pats had a big strong line and he had them zone block. The receivers were quick, not fast. So run a lot of vertical routes and few quick slants over the middle. Your two best receivers were Henry and Bourne. So you bench Bourne and you design plays not target Henry especially in the red zone. The strength of the online was the center, so run a lot stretch running plays. Mac’s greatest strength is his brain and ability to adjust before the snap. So take away his ability to call audibles and adjustments. And for good measure, take away Andrews’ ability to call blocking assignment adjustments.

Jones didn’t have a good season, but to put all the blame on him is stupid. Other than Stevenson (who was way over used) and Owenu, everyone on offense had a bad season. The biggest reason was the coaching.

I’m very interested in seeing how both guys play in the preseason because I don’t see Mac as having much superiority in talent, if any.

It’s odd how everyone dismisses a QB competition. There may not be one at the moment but Mac should not have a long leash if he struggles out of the gate.

Mac gets coddled by the local media and some fans. You’d be led to believe that he has accomplishments under his belt.

Look what up? Your wrong opinion?
You are right and I am wrong. Of course! The Patriots Defense was "Elite" and " Stout" ...

Good grief..

They are the exception to the rule. It’s really really hard to be great as a tiny QB.

Greg Maddux was one of the best pitchers ever. If a pitcher can't throw a fastball over 90 MPH he's very unlikely to make it in MLB. Both are true.

Isn't Zappe 6'1? Why are we talking about him as if he were Kyler Murray height? He's one inch shorter than Aaron Rodgers. Not ideal size, but not really that much of an impediment to play QB in the league, especially in 2023.

Well yeah, but you seem to think my “you are wrong” is egregious compared to your “look it up”
Yes the patriots defense was very good last year.
