(Edited Title:) Writer thinks Zappe is winning the QB "battle"?

This is just ignorant ^

Go look at the 49ers lame schedule, the Eagles schedule…. everyone has dogs they play. That’s how averages work.

Also Goff and Detroit had the 6th best offense in the league, the best QB we played all year was Burrow and we held the Bengals to the 4th lowest point total of their season… despite our offense not scoring for three quarters.

Our defense was a top five defense… period.
Maybe top 5 in giving up 30-burgers

Hey genius… the Pats offense was ranked 17th worst in turnovers, the special teams units allowed punt and FG blocks. If Mac throws an interception and the opponent takes it to the house…our defense didn’t allow those points. If the special teams unit allows a punt block and the opponent takes it to the house our defense didn’t allow those points.

Our actual defense gave up the 3rd fewest points, forced the 2nd most turnovers and scored the most defensive TD’s in the entire NFL. That’s a top five defense… it’s elite.

You never want to dress your ignorance up in bright clothing and prance about town.

Bill was non committal again today when asked about the QB competition. Reminds me of 2021 when many were sure Newton was going to be the starter and Mac took the job from him.

I was comparing him and Mac to every QB in history who media draft experts told us had a weak arm yet led successful careers anyway.

You pretending I said Zappe = Montana or Brady is just you being intentionally and willfully ignorant… or you’re just genuinely
Wow you are wozzy lighten up

Except that Jones outplayed Newton all summer. There is no evidence that Zappe is outplaying Jones. In fact, Jones seems to be the clear #1.

You are right and I am wrong. Of course! The Patriots Defense was "Elite" and " Stout" ...

Good grief..
I looked it up for you
Our defense was "elite" and "stout" against the NFL's dregs and their retread/garbage QBs.

Detroit and Goff managed 0 pts
Indy and Ehlinger scored 3
Jets and Wilson scored 17 and 3 pts in their two games
Ariz and McCoy managed 13 pts

Note: Of these 4 juggernaut franchises, only Goff has retained his starting role in '23

Verses playoff teams:
NE's D relinquished an average of 27.2 pts/gm in 7 games ( 33 or more pts were scored against in 3 games)

Buffalo averaged 28.4 pts/gm on offense
NE held Buffalo to 24 & 35

Minn averaged 24.9 pts/gm
NE held Minn to 33

Balt averaged 20.6 pts/gm
NE held Balt to 37

Cinn averaged 26.1
NE held Cinn to 22

Mia averaged 23.4
NE held Tua to 20 in wk 1
NE held Bridgewater to 21 in week 16

Note: On the season, NE relinquished an average of 20.4 pts/gm (11th best in NFL, 5th best in AFC)
Note 2.0: NE held only playoff team Miami in week 1 below their season average.
Note 3.0: Two non-playoff bound teams scored a 30 burger or more vs the stout and elite NE D (Chi and LV)

In total, NE's elite and stout D relinquished 30 pts or more in 5 games
Not sure why some posters and fans can't see this. The stats speak for themselves. Ty Law, Rob Nikovich and others in the media have noticed that the defense doesn't give competent offenses much resistance. In fact, Bill's record against teams .500 and above since 2020 has been very bad at 10-20. However, the offense needs to show up and help out to sustain drives, score points and get the opposing team out of what they want to do. No defense can hold down a competent offense for long if their offense is pop warner level. Too many fans get sucked into "rankings" and don't analyze how they actually play against competent offenses. The Bills are another good example. They constantly get shredded by competent offenses despite being a "top 3-5 defense" and having a capable offense. They don't have an excuse.

The Pats pass rush has shown they can get after the QB, but Gonzalez and whoever is playing the middle of the field on passing downs will be the key as the boundaries and the 2nd level of the field is the Pats biggest weakness on D.

What did I say that was wrong? Anyone who is remotely objective would say that his problems last year weren't all his fault. That isn't debatable.
Funny how you don't award Zappe the same privilege.
And went eight games down the stretch last year with only one INT.

LOL! You argue that all of Mac Jones' problems were his fault last year and not the coaching because Bailey Zappe played really well for one game and you accuse me of cherry picking.

Zero self awareness in this one.

Good point. Even a good defense will get tired if their friends on offense are constantly going 3 and out.

Not me

IIRC he wasn't very good in camp and probably made BB's decision easier. In this case both QB's have had a good camp so far. I read BB's statement as more a generic thing ("Everyone is competing with everybody") so he won't have to say anything about anyone on the team.

And it is a different situation. Mac was a rookie. You cannot just hand over the reigns to a rookie like that. Especially Bill who rarely lets a rookie start right away at any position.

Seems like a strange article to write when we’re less than a week into camp and the offense isn’t likely to be fully installed yet.

None of this Zappe talk is based in any fact. It is the result of a collective panic set off by reckoning with the posibility that Jones' pre-draft projections - Andy Dalton with a Matt Ryan ceiling - are probably accurate. People are reaching for a fantasy that Zappe can replicate what Brock Purdy did.

People seem to get their panties in a bunch over our backup QB. He’s the backup …don’t sweat it…until he isn’t.

Matt Ryan was league MVP and a couple of plays away from being Super Bowl MVP. He'll retire in the top 10 for every volume passing stat. He was a top 10 QB as a rookie under a bad head coach. Mac Jones' ceiling is far from Matt Ryan.

And the fantasy that the guy on the bench no matter who it is has to be awesome and a superstar in waiting because Tom Brady. Lol. Lol. Lol.

It’s not just a Zappe thing we were hearing that about Stidham too and it was just as tiresome.

As for Mac Jones- could be a Matt Ryan someday? Yes please. Sign me up. Even if he’s the next Dalton that’s still better than where a large number of first round QBs end up. Ask the Bills fans about EJ Manuel and JP Losman.

except..... I never even remotely said any of those things....

I agree Mac Jones' performance suffered last year due to coaching. Yet, for some reason, you are not willing to afford Zappe the same benefit of the doubt.... and I am not cherry picking Zappe's performance, I am happy to look at his entire stat line.....

I agree 2nd year /majority of practice reps Mac Jones' performance suffered last year due to coaching. Yet, for some reason, you are not willing to afford 1st year/minimal practice reps Zappe the same benefit of the doubt.... and I am not cherry picking Zappe's performance, I am happy to look at his entire stat line.....
Added a couple salient points, hope you don't mind.
