Re: Eagles traded Isaac Sopoaga to Patriots

I think your excitement over the excitement is a bit overboard. I don't think anyone is expecting for this guy to be a game changer or replace what Wilfork brought to the team. The expectations are pretty low. Someone that can help from getting run over on first down and short yardage situations.

exactly

So we face 2nd and 7 rather than 2nd and 4, and have a chance to stop somebody running right up the gut on 3rd and 1. An occasional immovable object in the middle, in other words.

I'm not sure if you saw the Miami game but this team was in desperate need of a big body in the middle. If this guy can just hold the middle for a few plays a game then this trade is a plus.

LOL, yeah I was joking, maybe I should use more emoticons. Just like I often wish for a sarcastic font.

I know a big body will help, but doubt he is going to help all that much. I don't think he will play many snaps a game. Additionally if he can hold his ground on short yardage runs, that won't help the defensive edge.

We get Sopoaga for slipping down roughly 10 picks (hopefully), from late in the 5th round to somewhat high in the 6th round.

What is not to like, even if it's an 8 game rental?

Actually, late in the fifth round to 5th round compensatory picks plus
somewhat high in 6th round.

Re: Eagles traded Isaac Sopoaga to Patriots

My early read on this guy is that he's a wet blanket on par with a Brady2Moss, or one of the other savants who've graced us with their presence here over the years.

Aww man, now I am a wet blanket? lol

Hey in all my years of fandom, I have encountered far too many over the top unrealistic optimists that fail to ever keep their feet on the ground. Everything is great, everything is a good move, everything is working out, everything is going to lead to winning the super bowl.

I have encountered far too many cliff jumpers as well.

I just try to temper things with a dose of grounded expectations.

This guy may help, he may not. We shall see.

I fear you may be right. But I can see Vince doing an extension and cementing his legacy here. Although he will probably be able to get a huge contract on the open market. I can see a team like Baltimore signing him for 6m. Vince and Ngata. Scary thought.

Vince will be 32 years old coming back from a serious injury.

Don't really pay attention to the Eagles nowadays apart from Shady McCoy so could someone tell me how good their run stuffing is?

thanks for the link.

I clicked it expecting to read the fans moaning that we got the better deal, but the first page comments indicate that all seem to be happy getting rid of him because he wasn't playing well.

That has been my point. If he was worth what some think he is, the Niners would have kept him, and the Eagles would not be dumping him. I doubt he is the run stuffer that some are calling him. That is obviously his role, but the Eagles fans are saying he is not fulfilling his role and that does not surprise me, nor would I expect him to all of a sudden become a run stuffer that is going to make this defense much better.

Played Rugby in Samoa, nice. Hope he brings something to the table and turns out to be a great addition.

Sweet, they fill a need at a low cost. Got to love this move. Sopoaga helps the run D and Chris Jones can focus on the old Mike Wright role.

You have to hand it to Belichick. He ignored all the useless trades that woud have ruined the CAP for WRs like Fitz or Gordon or the elderly Vikes DE; and aimed at precisely the weakness that needed shoring up.

He chose a modest regular, that fits the Pats needs like the key in a lock, while not harming his Draft nor his CAP. A great pickup, even if Isaac is not what he once was.

If I'm wrong then I apologize. We'll see!

I don't think they would have bothered to trade for him if they thought he wouldn't help at least that much. If they thought he would have so little impact then they would have just signed Anthony Rashad White for fraction of the cost and not draft impact.

Why would we jettison a 265 lb. pass rush DE because we signed a 330 lb. run stuffing nose tackle?

PBPF, we're talking about JAKE BEQUETTE. You can't really call him a pass rush DE. He may be 265lb.s but the only thing this kid has rushed in two seasons here is his resume.

.....and the Pats picked up Andre Carter last week.

That's not the case. The board mostly talked about freeing up game time for others (Logan). Only a couple didn't like him.

Re: Eagles traded Isaac Sopoaga to Patriots

Uh, I noticed, watching the Niners that it had more to do with their linebackers missing a lot of tackles this year. Don't know why the linebackers are not as good, but doubt it has anything to do with Sopoaga. If he was that important to the Niners wouldn't they have brought him back? I think it is evident the Eagles do not think he had anything to do with their improved run defense, wouldn't you say?

If blockers are running free and smashing linebackers, it could very well be because there isn't a suitable tackle on that defense. Bruschi and Seau were able to be effective until they were pretty long in the tooth because of the solid protection they got from the front of Wilfork, Seymour, and Warren.

I'm not saying we have the next Ted Washington (since that's the reference everyone wants to use), but nobody on that SF D sucked. SF also peaked on defense last year. Age and other factors have caught up to them.

Why are we talking about jake bequette on a thread about sopuaga?

The Eagles signed him this offseason for 3 yrs , $12 million.

He's no Wilfork, but he can be serviceable and not a bad value for a 10 or so place tradeoff between a low 5th-high 6th rounder.

Solid move for the Pats.

Gordon's on a 2nd round rookie deal. I don't know where you're getting the "ruined the cap" theory from with regards to him.

I agree. No doubt that is the hope. Eh, I just don't think the guy is all that good, but we shall see. As I said if anyone can get some juice from a used lemon it is BB.

It's top 10 in YPG & YPC so far this season. Though, Sopoaga wasn't the main cause of that (their pass defense stinks and teams tend to throw all over them skewing the stats). Sopoaga hasn't been very good with the Eagles, but he was pretty solid with the 'Niners.
