A little bit. But not because of his play. I just don't know if he has the natural leadership skills that an elite player at that position needs to have. Like- the 1st time I ever saw Brady at the podium I knew he had it. I could tell by the way that he carried himself, too.
When I observe Maye, I can't really tell at this point. Hopefully, he grows into it.

And Mac Jones never had that. Never felt he was a leader. He said later he just wanted to be "one of the guys" and that cinched that thought for me.

Maye is TBD in that category.

People need to realize that changing to MacDaniel’s offense is a big deal and a big challenge for any QB. But long term it should pay off for both he and the team. Had he continued in a west coast system you could look at him as a 2nd year player, but with this change it’s basically his rookie season, and I expect him to face most of the struggles rookie QB’s face. However he’s fortunate that Vrabel isn’t going to put everything on his back, and instead will look to run the ball and play strong defense as their path to winning. But there will also be times when the game goes into his shoulders, and how he’s able to manage that should give us some insight as to how he is going to turn out overall. So while some here will embrace all of the negativity of the Boston sports media, and will echo their screaming and crying about any mistake, I plan on giving him a couple of seasons to turn into the player I think he can be.

Oh my, I hope his articulation isn’t bad, that’s a career killer.

I tell ya this: I sure as hell would trade Maye for Dart if we could. Dart had the far, far better college career and looks more poised in the pocket already than Maye ever did.

Didn't realize Dart is only 3 months older than Maye. Thought he was older for some reason

Yeah I'm looking at this as year 3 of transition away from the old regime. The last 2 years were total stall outs and I expect it to take a bit before we're back.

I wasn't thrilled that mcdaniels came back cause after so many retreads I think he's message is diluted and he has to earn back my trust. He has to prove that he can change his system enough that his plays aren't predictable as someone who's watched the pats for 30 years. He has to shallow his pride and understand Brady isn't there as his offensive binky to carry his unrelenting message to the tMcKay.

Sometimes you have to simplify your option routes, m'kay.

I nailed picking Josh Allen in that draft.

I would visit a Browns board and talk QB. I always stated that Allen had all the raw materials to be a great QB, but that he needed development because he did not play in a Pro style offense @ Wyoming. The majority of their fans disagreed with choosing Allen. While Mayfield has been pretty good, Allen has so many post season NFL records, its amazing that he has not taken Buffalo to a SB.

Im a believer in Dart too. Its only preseason, but virtually every Dart pass last night could have caught they were so close to the target. I see a fire and intensity in Dart that's missing in Maye. That hating to lose gene. That type of energy spreads to the rest of the team. Jamenson Winston threw a perfect TD.

Well see. I have a friend who is a diehard Giants fan. He rolls his eyes when I tell him watch out for Dart. He told me that Dan Jones was a good QB.

What Maye needs is continuity in McDaniel’s system so that he can grow and mature as a QB with some consistency. Obviously there’ll be a learning curve; Rome wasn’t built in a day.

It’ll take some time for everything to click. Maye’s headed in the right direction.

What the hell does this have to do with anything. Please go look at how Mahomes, Allen, Montana, Lamar did their last NCAA game, and how exactly that has anything to do with their NFL success
There always has to be something to b!tch about…

It’s like the expectation for people is for Drake Maye to be a fusion of Tom Brady and Josh Allen.

I am sure Drake is very smart but he is not a cerebral QB. He is a playmaker. His style isn’t to read a defense and pick them apart.

He WILL miss read. What you hope is that when he does he is still able to make a play the majority of the time.
Let’s hope Maye can be BOTH cerebral and a playmaker

The fact that some are already holding him to the Brady standard and he hasn’t even taken a snap in year 2 yet is insane…good gawd!

Maye will improve but he is currently having to think about everything he is doing, on top of being very cautious.
I've seen this movie about six times. "Don't think, just do."

Let it rip, Drake.

That's the opposite of what I want to see happen. That's how we get that heroball.

I’m a little concerned, because I’m seeing only a small 2nd year jump. Not the big 2nd year jump I was hoping for.
Patience…I mean not one second of the year 2 regular season has been played yet

I think we have to accept the fact that Drake Maye could just be mediocre QB at best. Many posters want to delay the inevitable by resetting his timeline, but he's in a league that favors offense and isn't facing gauntlets like players before him did. This also isn't Madden football where your franchise mode continues after your 20 year run with it's former QB by drafting the next great QB. It took the Bills 20 years to go from Jim Kelly to find Josh Allen. Dolphins didn't have anyone significant since Dan Marino until Tua was drafted in 2020. The best QB's the Jets have had since 1990's were Testeverde and Chad Pennington. After Joe Montana, KC had decent QB play with Trent Green an Alex Smith before landing Mahomes. 49ers had some good years with Jeff Garcia after Steve Young, but had mediocre to bad play since. The Bucs didn't have any good QB's until Tom arrived in 2020.

I see a lot of posters here fearing the Pats could enter the dreaded territory most of the NFL has been in for a long time and that is scrambling yearly to get wins.
Or he could be an excellent QB for years to come…let’s allow him to get 10 NFL starts under his belt before considering his mediocrity.

Hot take:

Maye is going to have a long career in the NFL... as a back up.

What the hell does this have to do with anything. Please go look at how Mahomes, Allen, Montana, Lamar did their last NCAA game, and how exactly that has anything to do with their NFL success
Joe Montana's final NCAA game was the 1979 Cotton Bowl which is only one of the greatest, most famous comebacks in the history of college football where Montana was fighting off influenza and hypothermia to tie the game with 0:00 left (and win it with the successful XP).

I forgot about Boutte for some reason, and he'd be ahead of Chism on any WR depth chart.

But the main point remains. Maye is a very inexperienced and young QB who is learning a new and very complex offense with a group of WR's who are ALSO totally inexperienced in running this offense.

All this makes it so STUPID to cry failure and wonder if we should "worry about" our QB every time he makes a misstep in a practice. THIS is the exact place I WANT him to **** up... at practice! There are actually people here who have declared him a bust already.... in - this - thread.

This thread needs to DIE

Ken, the WR’s aren’t stacked 1-5, they are cast into roles, those who extend the field deep, those who extend it wide, and those who work underneath. I expect Diggs, Boutte, and Hollins to be their possession receivers, Williams to be more of a deep threat( and Douglas and Chism to be their slot guys and do most of their work underneath and in the middle of the field. But there will be a lot of. Mixing and matching depending upon match ups and game situations.

That's the opposite of what I want to see happen. That's how we get that heroball.
Brady's predecessor told him "fekk that, sling it" when Charlie Weis told Brady to take care of the ball in SB36. That gunslinger attitude is 100% not what they need from Drake Maye at this point in his career. How did that work for Bledsoe?

I'm not concerned yet. But there was a lot of hopium that we "found our guy" because he's more fun to watch than Mac and the corpse of Cam Newton.

The truth is, he showed some decent flashes, but also a QB who only has 1 win on his resume is always going to have questionmarks until he changes that.

I think because Maye is new and he looks more exciting he was getting far more of a "well are offense sucks and is letting him down" than the prior QB's were last year

Maye is developing unproven commodity. He has tools that could give him the chance to be an elite franchise guy. But if by the end of next season you told me the Pats were going into the next draft still looking for an upgrade at QB, that wouldn't surprise me either.

So I hope he develops, but there's not close to enough to say he's automatic or a done deal. He could still easily land on the side of being a bust.
