There's been a lot of media chatter regarding Drake Maye not looking great. The spray throws, the missed reads. I fully anticipated that the transition to the JMcD system would take some time. Are you legitimately concerned or is this just media hype and unrealistic expectations that Maye should be looking like a top 5 QB early on in year two?

It is unrealistic to expect him to be a top 5 QB in year 2. There's a better chance than not that he will never get to that level at all.

But I'd like to see some improvement this season in the passing game. The excuses from last year don't apply anymore. If there isn't any improvement and he's still fumbling and leaving himself prone to injury then I'll start to get concerned.

I want to see where he is at by seasons end. This is only his 2nd year and you can tell Josh is trying to make him a more accurate complete QB. We already know he’s athletic, can tuck and run and chuck it deep. What I really want to see this season is if if he can start playing in the short game with accuracy and go through his progressions and make quality reads, check downs etc. can he make the jump over the next couple of seasons like Josh Allen did. Way too early to start worrying imo.

We've got awful high, perhaps unrealistic, expectations for a soon to be 23 yr old kid in his second year in the NFL.

Barth and Lazar were discussing this week that he struggled against the Viking's post snap movement and their disguising of coverages.

He didn't have the level of coaching and QB responsibility last year. This is new to him. He has a lot more to process and make decisions on.

I don't think AVP was a bad Qb coach but in terms of what Josh expects from Drake it's night and day. It will take time.

Well, a lot of you guys weren’t concerned about OT the past couple of years when I was banging my pans together warning about undersized Calvin Anderson and moving Chuks Okorafor to the left side.

So, yes, I am concerned about Maye. His accuracy was an issue coming out of college. His last college game against NC State he played poorly. Brady’s last game he single handily dragged his Wolverines over the finish line against the Crimson Tide in the Sugar Bowl.

So there’s that.

Always wise to push to the head of the worry-wart line.

And to top it off a comparison to the GOAT to justify the worrying -- chef's kiss!

Hence my unrealistic expectations comment. These guys... Comparing him to Brady.

A little concerned with how hes looked in the 4 preseason drives against backups. Probably should have been 2 turnovers, a few errant throws, delay of game. It’s still early for a young qb learning a new system though, Not gonna panic until October ish. Also he did apparently fair well in most of the joint practices which it seems that teams are stressing more than the preseason games now to evaluate their starters.

On the bright side this year we actually should have a strong defense and explosive run game. This allows him to be more of a game manager with the occasional big play/scramble until he gets comfortable. Its a favorable schedule until that very late stretch that includes tampa/cincy/bal/buff so we can still win a good amount of games getting even average play out of him.

What the hell does this have to do with anything. Please go look at how Mahomes, Allen, Montana, Lamar did their last NCAA game, and how exactly that has anything to do with their NFL success

I think they are also very insistent on him about not having turnovers.

I think he is a bit indecisive right now when the image post snap change and he doesn’t want to make a mistake.

Two plays in the preseason season where the coverage change post snap turned into Drake Maye can’t read coverage.

Even if against the Vikings he missed the read on Pop and Williams, he still made a play out of structure so you aren’t dead in the water if he doesn’t get the read right everytime.

What I saw in the preseason big picture is Drake not having a great first drive but be able to bounce back and lead the team on a touchdown drive the drive after.

I am not worried at all.

I'm expecting him to be a caretaker 1st part of the year and making a bonehead play here and there and better in Nov/Dec.
Seems more reasonable to me than taking the "he's not the GOAT!" approach.

As they say it's about the journey, not the destination.

Let's sit back and see where the Drake + Josh thing goes.

If they take us to the Promised Land, that's great.

If not, let's at least try to enjoy the ride.

Mildly but with a *

I don’t feel his wonky mechanics have improved, he still seems prone to a bonehead decision on occasion that leads to a turnover, and he’s missed at least two huge plays to wide open guys because he didn’t look left.

The * is because I’m not sure they have schemed AT ALL in preseason, and it’s only been a few months with a competent OC.

I’ll have a better feel mid year.

I expect some bumps and bruises as he learns…just want to see consistent improvement

Not in the least. I expect the mediots to try to spin up angst no matter what he does, and i expect it to take a few years for him to become great. I’m just going to look for him to improve each season, and I don’t give a **** what the mediots say about him.

I wouldn’t expect him to put up top 5 or even top 10 #s until we do more at the wr position. We have improved there but even then its still an average set at best. Looking at other top qbs around the league drake has nowhere near the talent to throw to that these guys had while they made their way up, unless diggs somehow channels his 2020 self. If drake does it with this cast might as well start getting his gold jacket fitted lol

Yep.

Vrabes and Josh are teaching him how not to lose the game first. Take the sack. Throw it away. Call a different protection. Run out of bounds and don't get killed.
