Deandre Hopkins Visiting Patriots Next Week

Is that from a reliable source?
No. There are reports that it does lower his cap number, but we don’t know how much.

The $3.7M going around is the maximum savings from a four year extension (either real or via void years) without the player taking less cash in the current year. It’s a reasonable upper bound that almost never matches the actual result.

The only "official" thing I've seen was a tweet from Miguel (sorry, I'm not on Twitter so I don't know where to find it), that said this extension (paraphrasing) "Doesn't change anything on their cap in regards to signing Hopkins". Now, that could mean it reduces Parker's 2023 number, or it could mean it increases it but not enough to impede a deal in the area that Hopkins seems to be looking. We'd need more clarification on what he meant.

But it sounds like, if the number changes at all, it won't be by much.

Agreed. However, there may be LTBE's that decrease the savings some (game bonuses). In any case $3M or so seems reasonable, certainly HELPING in the effort to secure more upgrades.

Yeah I know... But they gotta play the games anyway, so they might as well try to win them until at least the trade deadline...
Risk is he stunts development of younger receivers and undermines O’brien with poor attitude about practices etc.
I do not want to see Bourne cut and would prefer a younger receiver like Nixon or Douglas get the chance to develop.

We play the games to win. We practice to develop players. There is a practice squad for guys that get cut to develop.

The D-Hop suspense is not killing me its making me angry just sign already Boston is a much Bigger Market than Tennessee.
Bigger market has nothing to do with a league that has a hard cap. Unless you mean, DHop should want to play under brighter lights.
Now the Red Sox are rage-inducing for acting like they're Tampa Bay.

The Pats right now have three #2Wrs in Juju, Parker (both excellent as WR2), and Bourne (who is really a #3, but I think has more than enough talent to be a very good #2).
Add a pair of solid receiving TE's, and they've got a chess game in motion out there.

DHop might be the best Chess-playing WR in the league right now. The team would be immediately much better with him. If one of the young'uns steps up big time, I'd expect Bourne to be moved if DHop is signed. I think BB remains a bit pissed about him from last year, but that's pure speculation.

I'd still prefer the Pats find a Jeudy-type in trade or FA, but that's only because I want some WRs to come in and stick with Mac long term, like BRady-Gronk, Brady-Jules, etc. Maybe Douglas or Boutte or Thornton steps up. Big MAYBE, though.

True but there is a risk that dhop infects team with poor attitude and worse overall performance is result. Hopefully BB has thoroughly vetted.

BB makes mistakes like everyone but I think he tries to throughly vet. Hopkins is older so he probably has matured a bit?

Not that worried about the development of marginal prospects like Tricky Tre, BoneyT or Booty; that’s what OTAs, TC & preseason are for, to see if any of them are worth using once the regular season starts… Douglas is somebody I feel can earn his keep independent of the others because his skills differ from the others, and more closely resemble those of Dawghouse Bourne; speaking of whom…

I don’t want to see him cut either; there’s plenty of room for all of Hopkins - JUSS - Parker - Bourne - Douglas - BoneyT… Nixon’s had his chances; I’m not going to stop pursuing Hopking because of what a late 7th-rounder might become.

Food for thought with no particular agenda/point behind it: Last year the Patriots had 5 WRs that played at least 40% of the snaps:

Meyers - 65%
Parker - 55%
Thornton - 51%
Agholor - 45%
Bourne - 41%

This is on top of two TEs:

Henry - 75%
Jonnu - 40%

I assume Hopkins (if signed) would get the most snaps on the team when healthy, but I'd be surprised if that was more than 70%. He's 31, and you want to make sure he's fresh for late season and high leverage snaps (he'll play 100% of 3rd downs, for example). It feels to me like there's some wiggle room to play everyone, even if they're not featured. Just distributing these numbers different as a thought exercise, it could be:

Hopkins - 70%
Juju - 60%
Parker 50%
Thornton - 40%
Bourne - 30% (last two could be swapped depending on who wins the camp battle)

Henry - 65%
Gesicki - 50%

Thornton is an afterthought for most of us.. sadly his stock is even lower than mac. Most of us including me have given up on him . Have more trust in Boutte or Douglas ( unknowns) than Thornton. I hope he proves us naysayers wrong , else add 1 more to the list of wr duds from draft.

Completely given up on Thornton? Are you saying you think he should be cut? I'm having a hard time imagining why anyone would give up on a second-year receiver.

Not cut. But not much hopes. Something around 300-400 yards per season and 3 tds .

Well right now he is a number 4

Go look up the stats of number 4 WRs (and number 3 too). And get back to us
