jeezus krist...what is it, acid in the water around here?
OK...let's play "Gaa goony gee gee!!! Sign Revis for 16 million!!!"...if the argument is "we can get Revis to take less because we're the Patriots" you're just plain nuts. So, we sign him for 1/9th of our available cap. The team we need to get by is Denver with Manning. Best case scenario for our 16 million dollars is Revis locks down ONE outside receiver. OK so far??? I mean he's not going to lock down TWO recivers at once, right?
OK, so now we have 16 million locking down one WR in the Denver arsenal. Of course , because we just spent 1/9 of our cap on a cornerback, we have to man the defensive tackle position with Chris Jones, Siliga, maybe a shadow of his former self Wilfork, maybe a Kelly if he can stay healthy. This means, as the previous season has shown for an entire four quarters in the playoffs, that Manning never gets pressured in the pocket, never gets moved off his spot and has a whole arsenal of receiving options NOT covered by Revis to throw to AT WILL. You can try to argue this won't happen but the historical evidence is against you.
Seattle showed THE blueprint on how to completely shut down Manning. Move him off his spot. THIS requires inside A gap pressure. Jones and Siliga provide ZERO as already proven. Wilfork, before his achilles tear, was being single teamed from the start of the season and showed zero potential to push his man into the pocket and move the QB off his spot. Kelly has demonstrated this ability BUT certainly not recently. So, pay Revis 16 million and hope Kelly can play and entire season AND provide the pressure inside that's needed to move Manning around? THAT'S the game plan going into this season?
16 million to Revis and then chump change to some 2nd tier stiffs at center and O guard along with prayers, rainbows and unicorns with the D line. Great. Pats will have a winning record. The Gaa Gaa fantasy player adorers will be ecstatic with the weekly Revis reports. The Pats may get to the championship game again and....get eviscerated by Manning again as he stands there all 4 quarters in the pocket, untouched and unmoved, throwing at will to the other 4/5's of his receiving corps and putting up 500 yards a 5 TD's again.
I want another Super Bowl trophy. I want Brady to go out in style as he deserves. Sign Revis to this idiotic, preposterous contract and all you get is Groundhog Day...again.
