Talib wants top of the market dollar? Goodbye

Do you think the Patriots shouldn't have to pay top shelf prices for top shelf players, or do you not think that Talib is a top shelf CB?

The 12m number I asked about was because I wasnt 100% sure if Grimes was going to earn 8 million a year for 4 years (16 million of which was guaranteed) or if he was going to earn 8 million a year + 16/4 million a year in guarantees on top of that (in Danger Zone math that comes out to 12 million)

I mean, I "knew" that guaranteed money isnt added to a Player's total salary.. but everyone's reaction made me wonder.

And still does a little bit, 8 million a year just isn't a game-breaker IMO. It's kind of what I was expecting his market value to be at (expert in salaries that I am*).

*Self-depreciating humor

I'm probably a lot farther from you in terms of properly predicting a player's salary, but I saw Grimes as being the ceiling for CBs this year.

If you look at it that way, I think it's fair to assume that Talib would be coming in a bit below that. Exactly "where" that would fall is of course, up for debate. I believe that Talib should receive anywhere between 6-7 million per year (plus possible incentives for playing time etc), but there are definitely others who feel that he should be paid the same 8 million per year (4/32 deal) that Grimes received.

I just don't see Talib on Grimes' level when you take the whole picture into play, such as missed time, chronic injury, etc. I see him as being slightly below that. Just my personal opinion though.

I have no issue giving him top dollar as long as some of it is incentive based and the guaranteed number is a little lower. He misses too many games to be gifted a giant deal.

I'll ask the same question I've asked other posters regarding Talib. If Talib wants 9-10 million a year (and in your opinions you would let him walk), who do you replace him with?

Just for whatever it may be worth to you, I would answer this question in 2 parts.

1. I would never take into account who we'd replace the player with as it pertains to contractual negotiations. Obviously, there are some exceptions such as QB etc, so it's possible that you or others may feel that our lack of adequate talent lately at CB may be worth making an exception for in this case. Personally, I wouldn't think that Belichick would stray from his normal routine of "value" and sticking to his guns, but it's certainly possible that he may feel that there's just no one out there. There are definitely players who are talented enough to warrant exception, and recently we've seen guys like Wilfork etc. It's possible that Belichick may feel that the dropoff would be too much, and he may overpay a bit in this instance.

2. To answer the original question, I would think that we could either a few things, or any combo of maybe two:

a. Bulk up the front seven (specifically DL) to help to hide any weaknesses in the secondary and help get more pressure

b. Go after a top notch safety such as Byrd, Ward, or Whitner to help make up for the loss

c. Have Dennard, Ryan, Arrington + either/or another high draft pick, free agent

Keep in mind that while our secondary hasn't looked well or had stability, that we did go back to the SB in 2011 with a ridiculous group of ragtag players where we almost won it again. On top of that, we still were able to compete when they knew that Talib wouldn't be playing in the regular season games, although that obviously changed when we were not properly prepared in the postseason. I think losing Talib would hurt, but that you just can't go over 7 million dollars or so. We'll have to see what happens.

I'm just a fan.. not a casual fan, but certainly casual when it comes to getting into the nuts and bolts of football.

My mistake seems to be assuming the Franchise Tag number for CBs as the approximate ceiling of what a top CB would expect to make this year.

But I see now that the aforementioned Revis was skewing the number upwards by... quite a bit -which is something everyone probably was taking into account.

I didn't realize Revis' salary was so much an outlyer.

Hence my complete lack of surprise that Talib might be asking for 8 million.

So another example of Danger Zone math: input faulty numbers, output right answer.. if by accident.

Yeah, just as an example, most of the upper group of CBs were making about 5-6 million last year (Grimes, Rogers-Cromartie, Talib); yet Tampa Bay decided to give Revis a pact worth 16 million per season. IIRC, they may have been forced to make their move prior to knowing the market was going to go down so significantly, but I really can't remember. Either way, yes--the Revis contract is certainly the outlier for the CB market these days.

Most are looking at something in the range of 30-40-50 percent of that, tops...

In Tampa's defense, none of the money is guaranteed, as it's a year to year deal. Revis makes 1 million dollars for every game he plays, and they have this year to year option for up to 5 years (4 are remaining). It's still an odd deal due to how much it pays in my opinion. I would imagine that Revis will be taking a significant paycut down to 10-12 million or so, should Tampa Bay decide to trade him.

Re: Darrelle Revis Available

High Draft pick or picks plus lots of money plus his penchant for holding out equals....pass

Here we go again. Trade for him now

Dangle a 7th rounder, see if they bite and make it so the trade only goes through if Revis restructures.

Try giving him some guaranteed money but bring the overall cap hit down.

If this happens, this changes my attitude toward acquiring Revis considerably. He becomes a must add player given the agreed contract will no longer hamstring the Patriots ability to conduct business. That said, I fully expect someone to trade for Revis.

These are just hypothetical numbers, but I'd give a third round pick to get Revis for $12M a year before I give Talib $9.5M a year. If the alternative for Revis and the Bucs is for him to hit the open market and then to get nothing for him, then it might just work.

As someone on twitter pointed out, the Bucs are cutting last years first round pick.

Would he go through the waiver process or is that not pplicable at this time of year? If he does, and you want him, its worth it to trade. There are many teams who have excess cap room and would love to spend it on a straight salary rather than paying signing bonusses to drive up cash over cap. Those teams could keep him one year and cut him if they wish at no cost.

And surely Revis is the last player in the league you'd want to front-load with a signing bonus, right? That's as good as begging him to hold out.

Darrelle Revis - Tampa Bay Buccaneers - 2014 Player Profile - Rotoworld.com

ESPN's Adam Schefter reports the Bucs will release Darrelle Revis by 4 PM ET Wednesday if they can't find a trade partner.

4/21/2013: Signed a six-year, $96 million contract. The deal contains zero guaranteed money. Revis is eligible for annual offseason workout bonuses of $1.5 million throughout the contract's life. 2014-2018: $13 million (+ $1.5 million roster bonuses), 2019: Free Agent

The Browns should be all over this. They have the picks, the cap room and a potentially elite defense which will be put over the top with a Revis acquisition.
