Brandon Lloyd??

I remember reading that he did take a pay cut...and still got cut.

That is correct ... if he had caught more passes while being double teamed he would have well been worth the money for his receptions. Stats are only a piece of the story ... Randy Moss when he was engaged helped his team more being double teamed all day catching a few passes than Lloyd did catching his 5 passes per game single teamed. Shane Vareen helped the team this year catching no passes being a deep threat decoy that lloyd was not. When you're lining a RB wide to open up the field then your outside WR's are worth crap.

Couldn't agree more, and the horrible percentage to anything beyond the shallow routes to all areas of the field prove this was a huge liability. I believe that Llyod would have been welcomed here for a lesser role with lesser pay, but that they couldn't agree on the specifics of that so he left. It's likely that he felt that there would be more interest in him from other teams but that's hardly been the case.

I wouldn't be opposed to having him fill the Branch role here as a less used possession receiver. Something as a WR3 or WR4, but obviously my opinion makes no difference and we can only speculate as to how much the team possibly tried to keep him on for a lesser role/lesser pay. I do think it's obvious that they were not intending on keeping him in the WR2 role anymore and wanted an upgrade, not only in speed, but also in ability to beat man coverage and receive YACs. Most importantly, Llyod failed at drawing much attention from a safety and couldn't help to open up other routes.

That said, he did do some things well and his knowledge of the system would benefit and possibly improve the lower receiving depth chart. I see what he did here as a great move to fill the definition of "possession receiver," but that's the only role I'd want him back at, and I honestly don't see him returning--although we don't know the specifics of his departure or the concerns about his character/attitude either.

Or the defensive personnel on the field is to play the run rather than the pass and splitting the receiver out wide provides a mismatch. I think that speaks well of Vareen rather than poorly of Lloyd.
