We seem to be undervaluing a good backup QB with physical skills and experience learning under the system.
On what are you basing this theory?

Someone else (don't recall who, sorry!) made the point in a not-too-distant thread that given Brady's stated desire to play into his 40's, the other part to look at with his contract restructures is the compromise from his side of the deal is that in exchange for not demanding top-dollar QB money, his contracts generally stay 2+ years out with significant dead-money hits that prevent the team from releasing/cutting him the way they have so many other players. So I don't really think there's any scenario in which this deal is any different - it will save them some money on the cap in the short-term, they'll be cutting him a large check, and it will solidify his place as the starter for the length of the deal. Then in 2018 they hopefully are forced do it again because of his back-to-back MVP SB winning seasons. At which point half this board erupts wanting him traded while he still has value.Agreed, knowing that Brady's been extended is great, and strongly suggests that both sides intend to keep him around for a good while longer, and that Brady-vs.-Garoppolo isn't going to become a thing.. That's awesome, don't mean to undersell that at all. This could just be a cap move to spread out his cap hit over a couple more years. I doubt it, since I believe that he intends to play even past this new contract, but it's a possibility.
On the other side, the possibility's always in play with Brady that they might have executed the most team-friendly deal in the history of the league. Something like two years at vet minimum while his salary over the next couple years is converted to a signing bonus that will be spread out over the life of his total contract, or something crazy like that that makes him even cheaper now and in the future.
I don't think either of those extremes is the case--safe bet that the contract will end up being somewhere in the middle--but I'm really intrigued to see the specifics, because that's what will tell us what the road map is for the next few years.
That's a little bit overly speculative lolI think he could potentially be a great even Hall of fame level
I still don't see why people think Jimmy is destined to be some kind of franchise QB. He has the potential to be a good player but I have yet to see anything from the guy that could wind up with us receiving a high draft pick. The jury is out on the guy until he plays a significant number of regular season games. I'm not convinced by JG, not based on what we've seen of him. He had a great preseason in 2014 but that's really it.We'll see. I think a second is more likely. Remember how everyone thought Hoyer and Mallett were going to fetch a first?
Yeah we havent seen that much but, from what I have seen he just seems to have "it." Has great poise. The value probably isn't there yet but I really do think he'll do great things somewhere given the right situation.I still don't see why people think Jimmy is destined to be some kind of franchise QB. Gotta start somewhere. Like Jae Crowder says it all started in the driveway.Someone else (don't recall who, sorry!) made the point in a not-too-distant thread that given Brady's stated desire to play into his 40's, the other part to look at with his contract restructures is the compromise from his side of the deal is that in exchange for not demanding top-dollar QB money, his contracts generally stay 2+ years out with significant dead-money hits that prevent the team from releasing/cutting him the way they have so many other players. The Pats wouldn't be able to take a 1st this year anyway, it would just get stolen by the league. Maybe a 2nd and 3rd, although I don't think any other team would be willing to pay that price. Sitting behind Brady didn't make Cassel, Hoyer, or Mallett notably good starters, so I don't think anyone's going to pay a significant premium for the "learned from Brady" factor. Having said that, I do think Garoppolo is significantly more talented than any of those guys that came before him.
I get ya, I just think maybe start with the idea that you think JG could absolutely win a starting job somewhere in the league instead of "if he gets a chance, PROBABLY HOF". Jobs that are realistically 'open' in the sense that if someone traded for him he would start right away are what Houston, Cleveland, Philly, Jets, Rams. Maybe Niners join that group depending on what they do. As HawaiianFan just mentioned Dallas is an intriguing scenario, but in the sense of doing what's best for the 2016 Patriots I don't think they should move him.Gotta start somewhere. Like Jae Crowder says it all started in the driveway.
If a team is smart they offer a 1st for Jimmy. Sitting behind Brady and maturing he will most likely be ready to start week 1 for teams that need a QB.
Cassell, Hoyer, Mallett....
I don't think sitting behind Brady and maturing is that appealing to other teams anymore
Yeah they sure did drop their nuts in the face of the Manning retirement storyWhat does this extension mean?
Well to find the answer to that question, I went over to the Colts board. Apparently the Pats intentionally went with this extension to take the spotlight from Manning's inevitable retirement and to thumb their noses at the league.
I didnt believe it at first, but given the high level of intelligence and credibility of Colts posters over there, I'm sure they know the truth

I'd do that deal if Jones makes the Commissioner to give our picks back.I wonder if Dallas would give up their 2nd round pick for him. Jones says Romo is going to be their QB for the next 5 years, but anyone else in this world knows that's more of a fantasy then a reality. Also, if they didn't learn the importance of a quality backup after this season they would be just plain stupid (this is the Cowboys were talking about though) Theres talk about them taking a QB in the first, which would probably be a reach, but considering their roster talent is decent and they're a contender, a 2nd might be worth it.
You can't forget both Romo and Jimmy went to the same school. Just a thought.
The top of this draft isn't as strong as most years so paying a high price to get into the end if the first round doesn't make much sense to me. If they see a prospect they really like, e.g...Gronk, then they can move into, the top 50 by trading their 2nd and 3rd, and if they need to go higher they could throw in a 3rd in 2017. As things stand right now I would prefer this approach while hanging on to Garrapolo, and unless someone gives them a first round pick I don't see much sense in moving Garrapolo at all because they will get a comp 3rd for him if he moves on in two years As a free agent. I'm not saying they will get a first for him only that they should hold out for one and hang onto him if no one gives it.

Detail: IF JG is worthy of a first, why involve a first round pick at all this year? It will be a higher pick than the Pats', so they'd just lose it as soon as the trade is finalized. It would make more sense to couple a 2nd round pick and a lower pick.
I'd do that deal if Jones makes the Commissioner to give our picks back.
