Brady, Patriots Agree to a 2-Year Extension, What it Means

Steve Balestrieri

According to Adam Schefter and Dianna Russini from ESPN, Brady and the Patriots signed a two-year extension that will have him in a Pats uniform thru the 2019 season.

If a team is smart they offer a 1st for Jimmy. Sitting behind Brady and maturing he will most likely be ready to start week 1 for teams that need a QB.

We'll see. I think a second is more likely. Remember how everyone thought Hoyer and Mallett were going to fetch a first?

I'm sure it's just a formality, but the people who get paid to write this stuff should note that the deal hasn't been signed yet (per Reiss).
Also, no details on guarantee, incentive and/or buyout clauses. So, this is good news, but let's wait and see the fine print before we draw too many conclusions about what it means, other than that Brady could be a Patriot until the 2019 season.

The Pats wouldn't be able to take a 1st this year anyway, it would just get stolen by the league. Maybe a 2nd and 3rd, although I don't think any other team would be willing to pay that price. Sitting behind Brady didn't make Cassel, Hoyer, or Mallett notably good starters, so I don't think anyone's going to pay a significant premium for the "learned from Brady" factor. Having said that, I do think Garoppolo is significantly more talented than any of those guys that came before him.

Agreed, knowing that Brady's been extended is great, and strongly suggests that both sides intend to keep him around for a good while longer, and that Brady-vs.-Garoppolo isn't going to become a thing.. That's awesome, don't mean to undersell that at all. This could just be a cap move to spread out his cap hit over a couple more years. I doubt it, since I believe that he intends to play even past this new contract, but it's a possibility.

On the other side, the possibility's always in play with Brady that they might have executed the most team-friendly deal in the history of the league. Something like two years at vet minimum while his salary over the next couple years is converted to a signing bonus that will be spread out over the life of his total contract, or something crazy like that that makes him even cheaper now and in the future.

I don't think either of those extremes is the case--safe bet that the contract will end up being somewhere in the middle--but I'm really intrigued to see the specifics, because that's what will tell us what the road map is for the next few years.

This year's draft is supposed to be bottom heavy - meaning not much quality at the top. I would trade jimmy for a first rounder in next year's draft

I personally think that Jimmy is a much better prospect

It means Jimmy G. will be riding the pine for the next 730 days.

Clearly, none of us know anything at this point. The Vet Minimum question was beat dead in another thread a week or so ago. Wait and see, I guess.

Unless somebody in Foxboro has inside information on how three Judges in New York are going to rule on the NFL's Appeal in the next six months or so, I don't them moving JG.

No. I remember that people thought Cassel would fetch a first, and we found out that a first was on the table for a deal that didn't get made due to the time issue. I don't remember anyone thinking Hoyer would fetch a first, and I remember most of us laughing at the idea that Mallett would bring one.

I think he could potentially be a great even Hall of fame level if given a good situation to blossom. But, teams let him slip to the end of second and he hasn't played much since. I think teams want to see real game action.

Sorry to disagree...but I would say a team is foolish to offer a #1 pick for a player who:
  1. Played in a spread offense against borderline Division 1 competition in college
  2. Is slightly undersized for the position ("small hands, short arms" but maybe he has a warm heart)
  3. Has not earned any meaningful/live game snaps for anyone to know if he is a viable NFL starting QB.
  4. Is the eighth person in the time line of "Tom Brady's Back-ups who otherwise suck at football"
I am not saying Jimmy G won't be a great NFL QB...but anything more than a late 2nd rounder for him would be a reach (IMHO)...plus, I like him and want him to stick around for the post-Brady era.

First off in terms of talent and potential none of the backup QBs come close to Jimmy. He was a steal in round 2.

The goal for all of these 'bad' teams is to find a QB. You have one that has learned under the GOAT and best coach ever, he's looked great in pre-season as an ACCURATE, smart QB

It would be great if it meant something like

Josh Gordon + Browns #2 pick for JAG

I agree with the 2nd part...but I would argue that the talent and potential of Davey, Kingsbury, Cassel, Guittierez, O'Connell, Hoyer, and Mallett could all be considered slightly better than Jimmy G. Jimmy G has the smallest hands, smallest school, and comparable arm to most of those guys. If it were about talent, then Mallet, Davey, and O'Connell would be NFL players right now.
All those guys played under "the GOAT and best coach ever"...and pretty much suck as QB's.

Won't happen.

We seem to be undervaluing a good backup QB with physical skills and experience learning under the system. What if Brady misses 4 - 8 games next year or in 2017. With Jimmy G starting these is a good chance a healthy Pats team goes .500 (or better) meaning Brady can return for a playoff run. Now replace Jimmy G with an average NFL backup, there is no playoff run. Belichick knows this, which is why he drafts his backups high. Insurance costs money.

Just based on the eye test, in my opinion Jimmy looks like a better QB, but there is a probably a reason that i am not an NFL scout
