Brady, Patriots Agree to a 2-Year Extension, What it Means

I don't think sitting behind Brady and maturing is that appealing to other teams anymore

Cassell - 7th round pick who found a way to get the (then) woeful Chiefs to the playoffs
Hoyer - UDFA who put up a winning record in in both Cleveland and Houston
Mallett - 3rd round pick who never developed

2 out of 3 ain't bad, and I'm sure teams know that.

I think the book is still being written about Mallett. With that said my expectations are still pretty low.

Cassell and Hoyer are not considered successes around the league. I don't even have to mention Mallett.

I don't think a team is going to offer up a 2nd round pick for a guy and say "gee, I hope Jimmy can be the next Matt Cassell or Brian Hoyer!"

Personally I like Jimmy a lot and think he's got a lot more potential than those 3, but history tells us those guys are not NFL starting QBs.. Now, just because those 3 bad NFL QBs (you look silly arguing they aren't) doesn't mean Jimmy will be or even that other teams are cautious because of the history... But having him "groomed" under Brady hasn't seemed to make a difference in the other 3. Point being, other teams aren't going to assume playing behind bRady drastically helps

A 7th round QB selection, who never started a game at QB in college, has managed to have an 11 year NFL career (so far), and has had 2 seasons where he was arguably a Pro Bowl level QB (and he went to the Pro Bowl one of those years). Only a complete fool would think that's not a success story.

A UDFA QB selection has managed to have a 7 year NFL career (so far), and has managed to put up a .500 record as both the starting QB of the Cleveland Browns and the starting QB of the Houston Texans. Only a complete fool would think that's not a success story.

Agree, and even that bar is set too high, IMHO. Just making it onto the roster of an NFL team has to be considered a success story, given the odds.

Teams aren't looking for the Hoyers and the Cassells of the world, dude. They are looking for starters who can potentially lead their teams to Superbowls. Franchise guys.

While you can consider those guys successful considering where they were drafted and where they came from, they are not NFL starting QBs who teams can build around.... Dear God.
