Vince Wilfork doesn't care about point spread vs. Patriots, cites 2007 Giants as underdogs

"I think last night we saw the game with Alabama and Clemson where these so-called experts had Clemson as the underdog," former Patriots lineman Vince Wilfork, now with the Texans. said Tuesday. "In '07 the experts had the New York Giants as underdogs and both of those teams went on to win the Super Bowl and the National Championship so it goes to show you what these experts know."

You disappoint me, Vince...

...how can I include you in my circle of trust?

david was the underdog, until he wasn't

We've got plenty of examples of underdogs recently beating NE in the postseason.

2007 NYG
2009 BAL
2010 NYJ
2012 BAL

All of these spreads (the exception possibly occurring in '09) were hovering around double digit favorites, where the underdog beat us outright.

Vince makes a great point. I guess we're doomed then

What else is he supposed to say? It's one of the best examples of an underdog upsetting the heavy favorite, unfortunately.

Having said that, his team will lose badly. It's going to be a massacre.

He also mentioned the Bama-Clemson game. Of course, Bama was only a 6.5 favorite in that one.

This team is significantly healthier than the 2007 team. And the Texans are not the 2007 Giants.

You could make the argument that this is the healthiest team AND the deepest offense that NE has ever had going into the postseason. And that's without Gronk.

I think denver was an underdog at home last year also.

To be fair pretty much anyone going against the Pats in the playoffs is an underdog, so unless we win it all every year we're going to have quite a few losses to underdogs. But not all underdogs are created equal. There's being a minimal underdog (maybe 3 points or so) like the AFCCG last year, and then there's being 16 point underdogs like the Texans are right now. Very different.

Kinda reflecting that spread all of those teams scared me more than this Texans team does. Not to say this isn't a losable game because it obviously is, but given the standard caveats of this being the playoffs, any given Sunday in general, etc., I think I'm about as confident as someone reasonably ever should be.

God I hope we resign Floyd I swear to god we could go 19-0 with this roster next year

Brady
Gronk
Bennett
Edelman
Floyd
Mitchell
Hogan
Amendola
Blount
Lewis
White

Thats not including who we could get in the draft and free agency with over 70M in cap space call me crazy but I think they are gonna aim for a perfect season next year

The differences between the teams? Giants D was better at getting pressure. The Houston D is good at it but not as good. Also the Pats OL particular in that SB game was abused. This OL is playing fantastic right now.

Also one team has a bumbling joke of a QB. The other team has a much worse version of that whose impression of getting on a hot streak is getting on the borderline of mere competence to be a game manager.

If the Pats resign Floyd it depends on how much he shows. Personally I would love the idea of the Pats not being in position to sign Floyd cause he absolutely abused the 3 teams we face. That would be ideal

Anyone take me up on the bet that he will call our season over inside the game thread within the first 4 games of 2017 ? Any takers ?

Semi-related, I think I'm over the idea that there's ever such a thing as an "underdog" in the Super Bowl. Obviously there are extreme examples, and 07 was an upset on paper, but take two teams that have each played 18 or 19 games (plus pre-season), are battle tested through multiple playoff games, have two weeks to prepare, during which there are an untold number of distractions, events, and emotions, then mix that all together with the one-and-done nature of playoff football, and the matchup specific nature of football itself?

The Super Bowl is like a giant parity blender that chews up teams on paper and grinds them into an unpredictable pudding of awesome chaos. Not really comparable to a divisional round game.

You don't go 19-0 because of offensive skill position players, you go 19-0 because of OL, defense and special teams, and offensive skill position players. You named about 1/5 of a team.

Since apparently Vince, who played in the game, disgraced fans by mentioning it, then I suppose we should be saying the difference is Vince was on our team that day, and he isn't now, right?

Some of the biggest post season favorites of all time not only won but they covered. Goes both ways. More so in our favor. The 07 Giants could beat you at both lines of scrimmage. I think we'll be okay. Our O and D line is playing good enough. I don't think houstons offense can do enough

How in the hell was the 2009 Ravens the underdogs in that game? Our team was all busted up by the time the playoffs came around. Just goes to show Vince is right, the experts are complete idiots! But we already knew that!

Im hearing people that don't know anything about football joke about how the Texans can't possibly win. When sentiment in the stock market hits this level I start thinking about selling.
