Adam Schefter: Patriots want minimum of 1st and 4th round picks for QB Jimmy Garoppolo

Yep. The Pats are dangling the bait out there. If some team is desperate enough to meet those demands then see ya, Jimmy. Upon thinking about it further, something tells me that they're selling high, though, and would probably trade him for less than that.

My baseline is just about 2000 draft points.

In this draft the top 4 picks should go Garrett, Allen, then trades of Romo and JAG. That is what makes the most sense from a GM POV. You have 2 super talented D players and then the 2 best QBs you can trade for cause no QB in this draft class is worth a damn.

Seriously I have figured if the Pats trade Jimmy they will pick a QB up later but there is no player I look at that even jumps out to me is worth trying to groom. I am sure in hindsight someone will be okay but i don't see it.

I think that while sample size was really small (1.5 games), Garropolo has played so well that a 1st and a 4th is justified. This combining with the fact that there are a few teams that need a starting QB (Cleveland, Chicago, San Francisco, Jacksonville, Houston, Arizona and Los Angeles) and the fact that this may be the weakest QB class in a while, demand for Garropolo will be quite high.

I would prefer sending him out of the conference, so one of Chicago, San Francisco and Arizona (f*** LA and Kroenke). Jacksonville isn't a bad place either assuming they dump Bortles.

My question is how does he know this? Pats usually don't talk about this. The fact that he somehow got wind of this means the Pats are hoping to trade him.

It's his famous "source close to the Patriots". No one has any idea what that means. I can make **** up and say it came from an unnamed source.

Ok. This is ridiculous. "Reports" on three or more articles all based on an interview I listened to live earlier. Schefter speculated what he thought would be a starting point with absolutely nothing but "Bradford got 1-4" as a hunch !

I am usually more forgiving of media than most on here. But this "report" IS anything but... grossly misrepresented.

Solve these simultaneous equations:

Schefter says Garoppolo is on the block for a minimum of 1st + 4th

Lombardi says he'd be stunned if the Pats trade Garoppolo

Possible solutions:
- Lombardi would be stunned if anybody offered a 1st + 4th.
- One of the two media dudes has lousy sources. (Note that sources are Schefter's stock in trade while Lombardi is more about opinions and insights.)

......and if you were reading here at Patsfans.com, you probably could have read the Schecter quote about 3 months ago in one of the many JG threads. But it's nice to have some comfirmation from BSPN.

"Okay, now have somebody else in the front office call Schefter and tell him something completely different."

I think it's pretty helpful to read the exact quotes:
As for what it might take? Schefter said a starting point would be a first and a fourth-round pick.

In my mind, Sam Bradford went for a 1 and a 4 [round pick], so to me that is the starting point and I don’t even know if they would do it then,” he said.

Garoppolo’s contract is up after 2017, while both Tom Brady and Jacoby Brissett have deals through 2019. There are a lot of different options that could play out with Garoppolo, as the team could potentially deal him after this season, let him walk after next season, franchise him after next season, or even re-sign him after next season.

Ultimately, Schefter believes the Patriots will listen to offers and if the right one presents itself that is when the Patriots would trade Garoppolo.

I think people are running amok here. It's speculation from one media guy. He's not quoting anyone in the building. It's about as valid as anyone else's speculation. And read in context, we see he's even saying that this 'starting point' might not get it done.

In this draft the top 4 picks should go Garrett, Allen, then trades of Romo and JAG.

I get the value of a franchise QB in a QB-challenged draft, but trading the #3 overall pick for a 37-year-old QB with a horrible injury history and a $20 million per year contract...ouch.

So you think the Cowboys can get a high #1 pick for an aging injury prone Romo?

I guess a trade is possible if a team wants to eliminate competition for his services, but I could see Dallas cutting him if no one offers anything just to get his albatross contact off of the team.

Cap room would be the big winner for Dallas, anything else is gravy.

BTW Jags and Titans are not going to trade for a QB. No way. Neither will SD. Maybe the Bengals/Cards... maybe.

Outside the top 10 you have panther/saints/colts/eagles/redskins who are okay at QB. Maybe the Bills want one but who knows.

#1 Cle #2 SF #4 Chi #5 NYJ #7 Cle #9 Card #10 Cin #13 Bills

To me if we can't get a top half first round pick I'd rather keep him. Assuming we don't want to trade him to the Jets or Bills we have limited options.

I think the idea of trading JAG and our first to move up to 1-4 is okay if it comes to it. With what we can trade down for we can get that value back easily if we get that high.

nature of the beast. I think we sometimes forget how much it sucks to not have a decent QB. We saw a glipse in week 4. If you see that for 16 games Romo looks pretty tempting.

Browns have 2 picks in first round

1st pick
10th pick

Would be huge if we got the 10th pick.

Going to be a busy offseason

Not only that (assuming they end the season 1-15), Cleveland has the first pick in rounds 2,3,5,6. Along with Tenn 2nd round pick and the Pats 5th rounder. Plus they are scheduled to get a 3rd (would go to the Pats if its a 3rd), 4th, and 5th round comp pick.

Plus all their picks in 2018 plus an additional 2nd, 4th, and 6th round picks.

To say Cleveland is set up for the draft would be an understatement.

This is drivel. I can see the common sense of what he is saying, but we won't know anything until JG, or maybe even Tom Brady is actually traded. We certainly won't do negotiations in public.

Why would Houston think that Garopollo is a large improvement over Tom Savage? They were drafted a couple of rounds apart and both sat until this year, while Savage learned the Houston system under BOB until he decided to make him the starter. What has Jimmy G done, that is so much better than what Savage has done, that you would give up a number 1 pick to bring in a guy to compete with the guy you have developed for 3 years?
I know we like to think because he is a Patriot he is special, but there isn't a tremendous gap between Garopollo and Savage at this point.

Additionally, thinking teams would give up on Bortles (going into this season he was considered the main reason people were saying the Jags were going to shock everyone) when you have invested so much in him and you failed because your coach was atrocious, or Goff less than a year after trading a ransom up to make him the #1 pick is homerific.

Cleveland will be in the playoffs by 2019 and maybe even 2018.

Ideally, I think BB would prefer to keep JG as TBs successor. So would I , even tho I like Jacoby as well.
There's only one way for that to happen: Pats and JG would have to work out a deal BEFORE 2017 training camp that would have to be heavily backloaded with minimal $ upfront.

That means JG would agree to a. take way less guaranteed $ than he'd get from anyone else AND ride the pine for probably 3 more years as a backup- whereas he'd be starting anywhere else. I'd put odds of that less than slim and none.
As for tagging him after 2017, that makes even less sense since the Pats would lose significant leverage for the next year. I just can't see any way possible he isn't traded in the next 6 months

I would add..

49ers, (any team McDaniels goes to) , Jacksonville,

Darkhorse team = Texans.
Yes except Texans owe Ossy another $18m. Not this year
