Adam Schefter: Patriots want minimum of 1st and 4th round picks for QB Jimmy Garoppolo

I'm not sure what your point is.
If it's thatbits too bad for garapolo that he has a year left on his contract ok. If it's that he has a right to get paid more because he's playing I don't see why. If it's that he should hold out if he gets traded I disagree.

Your point is he should be happy to be a starter somewhere.

My point is he should be happy being paid like a starter.

I hope someone will stop soon with that trading Brady story because it will not happen.

There are only two remotely possible places to put Brady, which are the Texans (with BoB in place) or where ever McD ends up. This might keep the terminology/system the same but there are still so many issues related to that.

Not to mention the fact that such a trade would dump a $15mil dead money hit on the team's cap.

Why do people assume the leak came from the Pats. Its quite possible another team inquired was told at this moment its a 1st and 4th...then someone told Adam. I would say I think a 1st and a 4th is not realistic until you see that like most years FA QB's suck, and this draft is being called the worst QB draft in decades. So if you are a QB starved team a 1st doesn't seem far fetched. RGIII was worth 3 1's so... I'll sit back and watch.

Exactly. Then he gets whatever the top 5 ave is which is big bucks

The key in the end is that you could get him for "nothing" for a year without taking a risk in future cap hits (think Osweiler situation). And even if that one year doesn't give you a clear answer a franchise tag does the same thing where you might pay a lot of money but there is no future cap hit from it.

Yes its a lot of money but at the same time it leaves you with multiple exit strategies in case thing go south.

As far as Jimmy is concerned, I see two scenarios (I don’t know which one is the more likely and whether it will work out, and whether Bob Kraft could buy a Delorean if mistaken) :

A-They get a trade offer they can’t pass up for Jimmy : Bill Belichick trades the likely high first round pick compensation for multiple early picks in 2017/2018,which is ok : considering how deep this draft is in several positions of long term need, we could trade down and still get a stud with our first selection. Within the next seasons, Bill elects to build a “silver and blue wall” OL (which would be the Scar’s legacy) + get a solid rb group assuming this would 1- lighten Brady’s burden / extend his career 2- ease the transition for Brissett who could at least develop into a Dak Prescott type of QB if given the same kind of protection + running support. Brissett would have to work hard to live up to the Front Office’s hight expectations but being the backup by the start of the 2017 OTA/TC would give him those much-needed practice reps he couldn’t get this year, which will accelerate his learning curve. He might eventually never match the Gropp passing skills but he may prove to be a reliable game manager that keeps us winning during a transition era, while the organization keeps searching the next reincarnation of Buddha if Jacoby is not the Chosen One.

B-They decide to keep Gropp after no teams gives the Pats their asking price : they will have to consider allocating 30 to 40 M$ on the position from 2018 to Brady’s retirement (which could happen anytime between 2019 and 2021 assuming he gets a last two year extension if still performing well, matching his own “5-7 years”, “until 45” predictions). They would have to find a creative way to split this QB Salary Cap between the two players (restructuration/extension for Brady, heavily backloaded contract for jimmy with enough guaranteed money to make him accept the deal + ltbe/nltbe bonuses for both that would lessen Brady’s cap/reward Jimmy if the later has to get more snaps than expected for any reason, Brady’s prematurate decline/retirement, injury, etc). They would also have to envision a Montana/Young type of transition where Jimmy is a legitimate “starter/reliever” getting some playing time here and there to reward his patience & practice work/keep him sharp and ready. 30/40M$ for the most important position in football doesn’t sound completely irrealistic in a long term perspective assuming the salary cap will keep growing. They would have to keep getting creative and cost-efficient for the rest of the roster during these 2-QB years (through the draft or FA/player trades, usual Belichick/Caserio business but the margin of error would be slimer).

Tough decision to be made soon, but i'm confident they will make the right call after evaluating each and every parameter. IBWT !

Here's the phrase that keeps coming to my mind about Jimmy Garoppolo: trained puppies.

You know how a well-regarded dog trainer can sell pre-trained puppies at a huge premium? It's still just a puppy, you get that fresh young eager new family member, but you get skip the long slog of training.

The highly regarded McDaniels-Belichick-Brady kennel has taken our pup in hand so that he's ready to sit, fetch and go through his progressions from day 1. You can feel pretty confident that he won't slip his leash like Blake Bortles, or bite strangers like Johnny Manziel, or piddle on the carpet like E. J. Manuel. He's ready, he won't be a total trainwreck, and he could very well be a franchise's future. Even if he doesn't turn out to be that, at least they won't have to waste extra years on fruitless development (and losing) finding it out.

So if I were a GM, I think I'd pay the premium for the trained pup over any available rookie this year.

JG is worth whatever one GM is willing to give up to get him. Nobody knows what that will be, or if it will be worth it.

All I know is if I'm a GM I'd try hard to get him. You need the QB to succeed in this league, and I think he's capable of winning a championship.

If a team offers anything less than a high first and a 3rd I would tell them to suck my **** and hang up

According to everyone on EEI and Trent Dilpher said that there is a small chance the Pats will get both a 1st and 4th round pick for Jimmy G.

I don't see why they couldn't get a 1st and a 4th for Jimmy G..

YES!!!

BBs greatness isn't about always making the right/wrong decision. His greatness is having a multitude of contingencies and options at the ready in case the s**t hits the fan hes not hamstrung or stuck with a crap situation. He always has options.

How the Jimmy situation plays out will be fascinating to watch unfold. He knows what he has with Brady and hes going to ride him for as long as Tom produces. He has a quality QB in Jimmy that hes happy to keep and be the next starter or trade for a king's ransom. Brissett is a good kid but BB is very curious to see how the kid develops as additional info will help him be more educated in making a decision on Jimmy. He can also draft a kid in top part of the 2017 draft.

Nothing is forced or done in haste or desperation. Its all measured and calculated.

I don't see why they couldn't get a 1st and a 4th for Jimmy G..

Well in that case, we'll just keep Jimmy.

Good luck drafting your new QB or signing one of the available FA QBs.

I can't see a scenario where JG would want to wait and waste 5-7 years of his career. He is either traded this year or next off season after being tagged. The alternative is to "Montana" Brady, which I can't see happening while he is still capable of bringing home the Lombardi's. If I were to bet JG is playing else where next year and Bill has multiple hands to play on Thursday night of the draft.

In addition if you are a QB needy team, and graded JG out as a 2-3rd round pick coming out of the draft. Then factor in three seasons under the GOAT, learning how to be a pro and do it right. He's 25, performed well in the two games he played in the NFL. How do you take the UNC kid over that, assuming the UNC kid comes out after one season as a starter. To me its a no brainer, but I am discussing this on a forum and not in an NFL war room.

But watching CSN Chicago right now and they are talking about this very subject. Although they assume Fox is staying, I would not be surprised if he is gone. And if I am Josh I think the Bears would be a great spot. Stable ownership, excellent fan base and bring your boy JG with you. Just my $0.02!

i will say it again. no way BB trades jimmy G.

If brady is going to play until he's 45, how can BB keep JG around? By then jimmy will be 28.

Based on what? Brady isn't showing signs of slowing down. They clearly like Bissett, JG's value will never be higher than this offseason with this pathetic QB draft.

Its either Brady or JG...and in BB's own words "There is not other QB I would rather have!". If Jimmy G stays, IMO, it will only be because of a major injury to Tom, suffered between now and February (Not jinxing anything just saying) or no one would pony up a 1st or high 2nd.

However If Fox Stays that bet is off and Barkley has been better
