The original post at the start of the thread is now updated with the complete lists through today, 10/12/17.

In other news, DE/DT Lamarr Houston has signed with ... Houston. He worked out for the Pats on Sept. 22nd.

Here's an interesting question ...

I've seen several references recently about various players being put on "Practice Squad IR". I don't recall ever having seen this designation before, and, as far as I can tell, it may just mean that the team is required to release the player as soon as he's healthy.

Does anyone know if there are any more specifics to this?

  • According to Doug Kyed, Patriots rookies G Antonio Garcia and DL Keionta Davis, who are both on the non-football injury/illness list, are out for the season.
  • Kyed adds that OT Andrew Jelks can return from the non-football injury list in the coming weeks.

It seems to me that there may be some confusion or grey areas about this. IIRC, Miguel believes that none of the three are eligible because they weren't on the active roster after cutdowns - something possibly new this year wrt NFI rules.

If that's NOT the case, it's not clear to me why Jelks would be eligible to return, but not Davis. Davis never practiced with the team - and wasn't yet even medically cleared - due to a neck injury (bulging disk) that was discovered way back at the Combine. Garcia, OTOH, did participate in one practice, I think.

Not sure but I think it is new to be able to IR PS players.

How so? I haven't seen either of them play, so I couldn't tell much difference, except for size.
Because Carter at least has the resume, pedigree & athletic #s to have a chance at possible success; Wiltz has none of those things.

I'd like to compare Wiltz to Carter in testing numbers, but I haven't been able to find any for Wiltz, aside from a mention of him posting a 4.43/40 at the 2017 Iowa State pro day and that he was apparently also a track guy.

As far as I can tell, Carter was on IR for his rookie season with DET in 2015 and on their PS on 2016 through Christmas. Then, after attempting to convert him to safety during 2017 OTAs and Camp, the lions waived him during cutdowns. Maybe I have the wrong "Alex Carter"? If not, that doesn't seem like a particularly stellar resume.

It's not a stellar resume, though I was thinking more about his college resume.

FWIW:

Wiltz - 2017 UDFA
... 2 seasons (jr & sr, JUCO transfer)/24 games at Iowa State:
... 90 TT (3.75/game) ... 2 TFL ... 17 PD/2 INT

Carter - 2015 pick #80 by DET
3 seasons (fr, so, & jr)/40 games at Stanford:
... 143 TT (3.57/game) ... 4 TFL ... 16 PD/2 INT

from Reiss:

Last week, it was pointed out that the Patriots are paying practice squad cornerback Ryan Lewis (University of Pittsburgh alum) as if he was on the regular-season roster, with a base salary of $465,000. The reason, I'm told, is that Buffalo had shown a willingness to sign him to its 53-man roster, but Lewis made the choice to stay in New England because of his familiarity with the coaching staff. Thus, the Patriots bumped up Lewis' pay as if he was on the roster.

That would make Lewis a developmental PS guy. I have D.Jones, Travis, and C Hollister in that category as well. Hopefully they all stick around..

I'd also like to see McCarron stick around.

Actually, with the possible exceptions of Ferentz and Wiltz, this PS is stocked with more potentially active-roster-worthy talent than I can remember from previous years' PS.

And yet, we have Bademosi, Richards and Ebner as our #4-#7 defensive backs, and
one is worth activating.

These players may be potential future players, but the defensive backs are clearly not active roster ready. And this isn't for a lack of trying. Belichick has had a lot of defensive backs on the Practice Squad roster.

BOTTOM LINE
We usually have 8-9 defensive backs active for a game, including STO players. This week, we don't even have a Practice Squad player capable of being number #8 defensive back, never mind having one better than Ebner as a defensive back.

I'd also like to see McCarron stick around.

Maybe Ebner should play safety instead of Richards. Couldn't hurt, right?

I was hoping this could be the year Ebner breaks out on D (esp. since there is not too much depth there). He got the nod early in TC but didn't seem to fully grab the opportunity and then got injured.

Travis is “active roster ready“ IMO. He also outplayed Richards in preseason. Richards is on the roster as a core ST at the moment..
