2017 Practice Squad (and visits & workouts)

One player from this week's workout group is a local guy.

Patriots reportedly worked out 5 players Friday, including multiple offensive linemen

Fabiano may be the most noteworthy as he is a native of Wakefield, Massachusetts and went to Harvard.

Last year he was signed by the Ravens as an undrafted rookie, but then was released during training camp. He signed with the Browns and was promoted to the active roster in December and finished the year there. He was waived on Sept. 2 following training camp this year.

The lineman was then signed to the Redskins’ practice squad, but released a week later.

I'd rather have Fabiano on the PS than lil' Jimmy Thanksdad Ferentz.

So now the practice squad center inherits the mantle of your "lil" insults"? I don't get it, why aren't you jumping on lil' Jimmy White and lil' Matty Slater anymore? ;)

White at least has earned his keep here, though I still place him behind Faulk, Vereen & Woodhead in our 3rd-down RB history.

I've never used the "lil'" moniker with Slater. I've used other words to describe him, but that isn't one of them.

And lil' Jimmy Thanksdad Ferentz is indeed little (and he sucks too, and is a waste of PS space), whether you care to admit it or don't.

Remind me again which team you're the GM for?

TE Matt Lengel released from IR with settlement (length unknown) on 9/30 .

Original post updated with last week's workouts.

FORTY-THREE players worked out in September:
6 DB
4 DL
5 LB

6 OL
5 QB
1 RB
2 TE
12 WR

2 ST specialists (punter & long-snapper)

I've seen a lot of posts (and made a few myself) wondering what the hell Ferentz has done to warrant taking up a PS spot as a 28 year old player who was a turnstile in the preseason. I'm sure his daddy is just a coincidence.

You can trust BB and that's fine, but it's plenty valid to question this Ferentz situation.

Most guys on the PS aren't really there for development or backup purposes at all. They're on the PS to play a role on the defensive or offensive Scout Team. Generally, it seems to have been more useful for the Pats to go with a guy who's been around the organization for awhile - thus they have Ferentz an recently brought back Jason King.

I understand that a lot of fans think of the PS as primarily a reservoir for potential permanent future members of the 53-man active roster, but that really hasn't been the case with the Pats very often.

The problem with the team is NOT who is on the Practice Squad. We could have 2 more or 2 less on the PS, and have the same result.

Some insight in the state of Pats PS from our good man Reiss:

Patriots practice-squad players and their salaries:

CB Ryan Lewis -- $465,000

DE Angelo Blackson -- $255,000

QB Taylor Heinicke -- $255,000

WR Cody Hollister -- $122,400

C James Ferentz -- $122,400

S David Jones -- $122,400

G Jason King -- $122,400

WR Riley McCarron -- $122,400

S Damarius Travis -- $122,400

S Jomal Wiltz -- $122,400

This reflects how much the Patriots want to work with the 6-foot, 200-pound Lewis, who entered the NFL as an undrafted free agent this season with the Cardinals. When Arizona released him from its practice squad Sept. 12, the Patriots pounced and signed him the next day. The University of Pittsburgh product (51 career games) comes from an NFL family: His father, Will, played cornerback for the Seahawks and went on to work in the front office with the Packers (1997-98), Seahawks (1999-2013) and Chiefs (2013-2017). Lewis’ cousin is Louis Riddick, the six-year NFL veteran and director of pro personnel in Washington and Philadelphia who now serves as an ESPN analyst.

Not sure if this was posted, but Lewis has some tremendous athletic ability and could be a nice project

2017 NFL Draft Profile: Ryan Lewis

STRENGTHS
Comfortable from press coverage. Uses pesky jab to disrupt receivers releasing into their routes. Presents himself as an annoyance in mirror-and-match coverage underneath. Better as a blanket than playing off. Stays low in his retreat and opens with smooth hips. Possesses twitch in his feet that showed up at his pro day and on tape when triggering on throws in front of him. Plays with toughness in his run support. Attacks blockers and rarely waits on ball carriers to bring it to him. Effective special teams cover talent. Posted A-plus test numbers at his pro day including two sub-4.40 40-yard dash times.

WEAKNESSES
Just one year of starting experience. Inexperience showed up with six pass interference penalties this season. Would panic and attack receiver rather than finding ball down the field. Make up speed on tape looks nowhere near his pro day 40 time. Consistently allowed deep ball separation to Oklahoma State wideouts. Displays some balance issues when redirecting from his shuffle and transitioning forward. Pattern recognition is still a work in progress.

DRAFT PROJECTION

Round 7-PFA

BOTTOM LINE

Lewis has decent size and his explosive leaping and blazing 40 time at his pro day is likely to get the attention of teams looking for athletic traits late in the draft or as a priority free agent. Lewis' lack of experience showed up on tape, but he does have short area quickness to work with and he's willing as a corner and on special teams. Lewis has work to do, but he's got a shot for a team willing to groom him.

Pretty good athletic numbers. Nice size. I like the potential of the DBs we have on the PS right now. Good group.

So, the patriots are paying him full salary to develop him for 2018.

back to 2 QBs..

The New England Patriots officially released QB Taylor Heinicke and G Jason King from their practice squad on Monday and signed DB Alex Carter and G Cole Toner to the unit.

EDIT: I thought they might give Storm Norton a look..

__

btw - Jetes worked out Hamilton. Thought NE might bring him back but must wait 3 weeks longer then the rest due to inj. settlement rules.
