Some interesting thoughts on FA and draft needs from Mike Loyko at NEPatriotsDraft.com:
Thoughts on the NFL Draft and Patriots Free Agency | NEPatriotsDraft.com - 2014 NFL Draft
There's a lot I don't agree with, but it's provocative and a good read. Among the interesting stuff:
I agree on the UDFA hunt. Believe it or not, about 20% of the players on the 53 man roster of NFL teams league wide during the season were originally UDFAs. That's a hefty percentage. 1/5th of the league was never drafted!
That's why you really need to go through with a fine toothed comb and try to find the hidden gems that didn't get picked up during the draft process. There are always a few success stories each year from the UDFA pool of prospects.
Sure a lot of these guys are likely just backups, STers, or rotation guys. But every once in a while you hit on a starter, and that's like finding a 50 dollar bill in your laundry hamper before you put them in for the wash. ;-) Considering that it's almost like Free Money, the effort to look for them is well worth it!
