Re: ESPN: 49ers forfeit 5th, swap 3rd with Bears for tampering with Briggs [merged]

swap of a 3rd? why not take away their 2nd and 3rd? since they did not make the playoffs?

so then we can tamper and that is ALL we lose for it?

forfeit 5th also.....

but compared to our 1 doesnt like much

note: i'll ive heard of this is here.

Meanwhile, the precedent that is set of rewarding the team who was tampered with WITHOUT EVEN LOSING THE PLAYER is terrible.

Imagine what will happen when a team wins a tampering case and they actually lose the player. Swap seconds? Firsts?

Just stupid.

Do you really expect anything better by this clown of a commissioner?

Re: ESPN: 49ers forfeit 5th, swap 3rd with Bears for tampering with Briggs [merged]

Guess what its not the first time the 49ers have had picks taken away by the league.

Re: ESPN: 49ers forfeit 5th, swap 3rd with Bears for tampering with Briggs [merged]

Was there any explanation for how they determined that it was definitely "tampering"? Curious what our "burden of proof" would have to be with the Jets, or the Eagles for Samuel...

shouldnt matter wether the player is lost it is the same act.
couldve cost bears more in the long run.

in our case it didnt matter that stealing signals is legal

Re: ESPN: 49ers forfeit 5th, swap 3rd with Bears for tampering with Briggs [merged]

This is both fore-ordained by the action of the Pats, and a move in favor of the Pats.

Any action that displays Goodell's behavior as universal rather than particular (against NE), to some extent exonnerates New England as not having been unique in the history of the league in misinterpreting/breaking a rule.

Of course, the 5-11* 49ers have a history of this kind of behavior as regards roster-building (they who pioneered cap-and-trade strategies before global warming was uh, cool.)

Goodell is portraying himself as not caring who gets caught in the crossfire. The more of these cases there are, the more the whole "spygate" thing becomes a case of a power-drunk neat-freak in charge of a league -- as opposed to a rogue New England franchise which cheated to win 3 super bowls.

And the beautiful thing is, Goodell now must be a Napoleonic douchebag, in order to counter accusations that he went easy on/covered up the Pats' wrongdoings.

Now to be consistent, Specter must demand the details of the Lance Briggs tampering. Next week he will need details of hair length throughout the league. Otherwise, it's a cover-up ;) Of course, that won't happen. But this and other discipline against other teams is ultimately good for the Pats -- if we care.

Re: The 49ers cheat

To quote a guy in the other thread,

5-11*

I say this half jokingly, but would anyone have been shocked if Goodell had chosen to punish the 49ers by stripping them of their 2008 1st round draft pick?

I don't think so. The Bears had a million years to get a deal done with Briggs. He was obviously going to test the water and see offers no matter what. Timing of the SF talks are irrelevant.

wouldnt have surprised me....dead serious.

ok than no tampering at all right?

Ya, they tamper and lose their first round draft pick....which happens to have been traded to the PATS!! SPIN SPIN SPIN

They have the Colts' #29 pick.

And there's no way the Pats' #7 would have been taken. Everyone knows that would be absolutely ridiculous, and wouldn't punish the 49ers at all.

I liked Florio's take on this:

NFL NAILS NINERS FOR TAMPERING
Posted by Mike Florio on March 24, 2008, 6:39 p.m.

In what is believed (by us) to be the first finding of tampering against an NFL franchise since the Miami Dolphins lost a first-round pick in connection with its hiring of coach Don Shula, the league office has announced a finding that the San Francisco 49ers tampered with Chicago Bears linebacker Lance Briggs during the 2007 regular season.

...

A nice reminder that Don "Shame on the Patriots - I would never cheat" Shula was himself the subject of a lost 1st round pick for the Dolphins in 1970.

So Don, are you telling us that you didn't realize you were being tampered with (as if that's even possible)? Or is it just that cheating is OK when you and your team are the ones doing it?

I don't think so. The Patriots had a million angles to steal signals from the Jets. Belichick was obviously going to tape their signals from one camera or another. Angle and locationof the Camera talks are irrelevant.
Fixed it for you...other than the fact that we had their 1st round pick, why weren't they punished as severely as we were for what most people in a non-blown out of proportion situation wouldn't have considered serious?

I don't know guys, I'd tamper him all night.

Only if we had an oral agreement first.

IMO, yes. There should be no tampering. I actually believe that it is in the current team's best interest to let their player field inquiries and get offers from other teams while they are still under contract and haven't hit FA.

Then before the team has to incur the risk of letting the player sign somewhere else in FA, the player can come back and say Team X is offering me this much money, match it and I'll stay.

The team then can keep the players they really want without them ever being truly exposed to FA.
