Curran: "In my estimation... [Gonzo would like to] be treated as if he's at the table in 2027." [previous title: "say goodbye to gonzo"]

Trade him, see the precedent it sets going forward.
If he sits out opening night, he'll be one step closer to getting traded. Tapping out against the champions on national TV is a terrible look.
They handed out garbage extensions to garbage players
The good news is that the Pats have to option to rid all of those bad contracts in 2027.
When was the last time they drafted, developed and then paid a blue chip player at a high value position.
The better question is when was the last time they had drafted an eventual blue chip player worth paying in the last 10 years? Joe Thuney is the only one who fit that criteria, but BB prematurely paid Shaq Mason for whatever reason. That helps Gonzalez case, but there's still no need to pay right now. I'd have no problem getting it done next off-season assuming he continues to play like he has the last two seasons.
They wouldn't even pay Brady what he was worth.
That's nobody's fault by Brady's. Former Packers executive Andrew Brandt has stated Brady didn't have an understanding of how the cap actually worked and that he was just doing Bob Kraft a favor - not the team.

So terrible that another team
Will gladly give up two first round picks and make him the highest paid corner in football without all the bs terms Kraft is going with.

Not worried about it until it happens.

Now Joey Porter is saying he wants a new contract before the season opens, so Gonzo is going to have to wait and see if he resets the market.

Teams headed into week 1 with bad somber vibes, a Gonzo extension would flip that real quick.
Bad somber vibes?

Dude, half the roster is still unpacking their bags and glad to be here after getting cut by worse teams.

I’d bet there are not many somber vibes in the locker room. Most guys happy they still have a job playing football instead of bagging groceries.

Belichick was the person who didn't want to pay Brady. Belichick didn't want any player making more than he was making.
This post is almost too stupid to reply to. Btrady leaving had NOTHING to do with how much the Kraft's were willing to pay him. They COULDN'T pay him. First, Brady didn't want to stay here. The roster had deteriorated and it showed the 2nd half of the 2019 season and because of the cap situation they couldn't fix it. Brady WANTED to move on to a team that had a better roster. Even if they could have matched the Buc's offer Brady was a FA (unlike Gonzo), he would have walked for all the reasons we discussed ad nauseum back then and don't need repeating now. And as we now know he left here for the one of the best rosters in the NFL, which just happened to be in the exact climate and lifestyle for his wife.

Also remember that we paid Cam the sum of ONE million dollars the 2020 season and STILL were in cap helll that season. BB might have had one of his better coaching jobs that season. He coached that wreck of a team to a 7-9 season with a QB who was a better runner than thrower and no arm and no receivers after Julian went down for the season (Interesting note: Jules had his best yards/game day NOT with Brady, but with CAM!) Still, the Pats were still in the playoff race the last day of the regular season (which they lost). They were a pretty competitive team with noodle-armed Cam Newton as QB and a LOT worse depth than we have now.

But the narrative is MUCH more dramatic if we go with story lines like Kraft or BB pushed Brady out and we definitely could have matched the 2 year $50MM contract the Buc's gave Brady and simply ignore the facts that they could barely pay Newton $1MM and stay under the cap, let alone Brady's $25MM, and Brady wanted to stay here and finish his career knowing he didn't have the roster to compete for a championship. And thus, we get post's like the one above

The Pats have a 2-3 year window with Brown, just like they did with Randy Moss.

Also, many on this board are unaware of the speculation that Brown is going to get his deal redone next off-season. He's only due $4M in 2027.
Randy Moss cost us a 4th rounder.

Even Curran is hinting Gonzalez is entitled and brought up Ty Law just like I did earlier. He also has hinted at his lack of stats as well.

Some of you guys want the Pats to pay Gonzo so badly just because.
The best CBs have few interceptions. That's how it works. They don't rack them up like JC Jackson and Asante Samuel.

In Revis's prime, he had 9 INTs over 5 seasons.

Ty Law played 20 years ago before the current CBA.

Those are nonsense arguments, but Curran has long become a complete joke.

Then don't reply to it Ken.

Wow totally forgot Porter Jr was in that Draft. The first pick in the Second that year.

first of all Ken your response was far dumber than anything I have ever posted, and that's quite an accomplishment in and of itself, second your post is nonsensical. I never said Kraftcwas unwilling to pay Brady, I said that Belichick didn't want to pay Brady more than he was making, and I think the history of Belichick's stay in Bew England would demonstrate that no player ever made more than Belichick was making, and Belichick was the one in charge of negotiating player contracts. And although I haven't researched it I would bet that the Patriots were the only team in football where the best player wasn't being paid more than the coach. Manning certainly was paid more than Dungy.

The next point is that you are saying that they didn't have the cap room to pay Brady, which means that Belichick knowingly created a situation where he couldn't pay the best player in football, whose fault is that? One of if not the most organized and forward thinking coach/GM's didn't leave himself the room to pay the greatest player of all time. That's either unbelievably stupid or deliberate. Belichick wanted to move on from Brady, period, and that's obvious to anyone who paid any attention to the situation,

We can go through the list of the best players in football if you want, and I'll guarantee they all make more than their coach, unless they are still locked in to their rookie contract.

I'm not the idiot on this one Ken, you are.

These posts always make me laugh. 99% of what you wrote here is complete speculation from posters here and a Boston Press who hated Bill. It doesn't make it wrong, and it doesn't make it correct, it makes it speculation. The idiot is the one that accepts it all as gospel. We will never know the complete truth here, and this isn't the place to discuss it.

The Chiefs just created 14 mil in cap room.

Board up the windows Ian, message board speculation is hereby a .....

How likely do we really believe it is that he sits?

Or do we just like having something to talk about?

Anybody have Kalshi or something? What does the "market" say about Gonzo playing opening night?

Some elite CBs do not accumulate eye popping stats because QBs refuse to throw at them.

If Gonzo is traded the NE defense will be a sieve.

As it currently stands, the Patriots value Gonzales as much as the Giants value Thibodeaux, who was also granted his 5th year option but no extension beyond that.

They've paid him just under $4 million a year for 4 years (including $3 million this season) and are willing to pay him $18 million for a 5th year - but no more at the moment.

The difference is, Thibodeaux is effectively 3rd string on the Giants, and Gonzo is an important member of the starting D., but in the end, they value Gonzo in the same way.

He is NOT sitting out the first game, Zero chance of it. He is under contract for the next TWO years. Doing it would make him a pariah in his own locker room. It will also lower his value to every team. Who wants to pay over a 100MM to a guy who has PROVEN he will take his toys and go home if you piss him off and things aren't going his way. Gonzo has done NONE of these things so far in TC.

The stuff you describe is the stuff you do when you are a FA,, NOT when you have 2 more years left on your contract. The day I take Gonzo's side in this dispute is the day he comes out and says, give me the same money and terms that the Seahawks gave Witherspoon plus one million more and I will sign. If he does that and is STILL not signed, then I'll complain about the Krafts.

Time has come to find out what **** the dispute is!
Gonzo is certainly keeping the notion that he's considering sitting out.

I don't think he will in Week 1, in the opener, a nationally televised game. But I'm not so sure he won't sit later in the season (faux hammy issues) if he's not going to be extended.

Where I think @upstater1 is correct is that if you revisit it in 2027, there have been a new round of contracts for cornerbacks and the AAV Gonzo wants is now $34 million or $35 million or $36 million. The price tag just keeps going up. And if we're balking at $33 million now, is the team going to be more ready next year when they also are now negotiating with Maye?
They’re already prepping Maye to “sacrifice for the good of the team.”

I sure wish one of these days Bob Kraft would sacrifice for the good of the team.
