Player Signing Patriots hosting OL Greg Van Roten [Updated: Signed 8/17]

Dr Bob, I haven't heard anyone have confidence on Brown returning early.
I believe Vrabel said something to the effect of he will be out for a few weeks and miss the rest of the preseason. I took that to mean he will not miss much more than a month total. If he was going to miss more than 2-3 regular season weeks for sure they probably would have used an IR spot. The fact they didn't seems to indicate they feel confident in his timeline being short term.

This is my read of events anyway.

Not at Center. They don't even have one there, never mind two.
Van Roten has played center, started two games there for the Giants in 2024. He has also been the entrenched starter at both guard spots for various teams over the course of his 14 year career.

He is our top backup for all the IOL positions at the moment. Probably even when Ben Brown is fully healthy that will still be true. Or Brown might be our top backup at center, with Van Roten being the top backup at guard. That to me seems like a good balance.

I honestly believe Van Roten was going to remain on speed dial until the injuries.
Decent speed dial player, with heavy splits between pass pro (good) and run block (bad)
decent, reliable back up IOL.
I expect Brown back sooner than later, and perhaps we see Rupcich mid season as well.

You really have no clue. Wilson did it last year and it was a abysmal. Did you not see the results? If you think he looked good a left guard, you are an idiot. Hudson was horrible against the Colts. How do I know? I was frikin there watching the game. You don't just slide a rookie tackle into a position he has never played while his is try to lean two positions in a new offense at the pro level. You seriously have no clue.

What about Ben Brown last year or Ted Karras a few years back? If I waste my time and look it up there are many other examples. I'm talking about emergency second backup.

And Wilson was not horrible last year. He wasn't an all star, but he would have been one of the better backup guards in the league, if that were his role.

Just stop it.

I really love our OL depth now. Campbell-AVT-Wilson-Onwenu-Moses Roten-Brown-Lomu-Bryant. That is 9 legit deep when healthy. Lomu is starting to get it too. He was super rocky early and kind of got good old 'hey rookie' treatment a bit. But he has been more competitive recently. Think of where we are right now and were we were 2 years ago. We've gone from the worst OL in the league to one of the deepest OLs in the league. Though the question of elite starters is still open. Hopefully AVT can be his probowl self.

I am tempted to pump the brakes on Van Roten. he is older than Moses, and making vet min.
will he stick around?
good gamble in a time of need, but once Brown and maybe Rupcich healthy, I don't think Van Roten sticks

I know you liked Ruprich in camp, but he's gone.

The team can't sign Ruprich until earliest week six. If he's any good another team will pick him up before. And by week 6 Van Roten's contract will be guaranteed.

The only chance Ruprich will be here is desperation or on the practice squad. if the team had plans for him they would waited to IR him, like they're doing with Ben Brown.

Brown is not on IR (yet)
Pats could pay/give Rupcich an injury settlement for 4-6 weeks. he can resign after another 3 weeks. So week 7-9 he could return pending health and if he gets other offers

Right. Because they want Brown available when he's ready. If Brown is not healthy by the end of camp, they will IR him with return like they did with Tavai last season.

Unlike Brown (if things stay this way) Ruprich will be available to anyone who wants him earlier. You don't do that if a player is in your plans.

So yes the team could bring him back if nobody else is interested, but since they handled his situation in this manner, this was a settlement and cut.

I don't like the sound of this;

Bradyn Swinson and Gabe Jacas both took advantage of LT Caleb Lomu’s low hands (think Vederian Lowe), swiped them down, and easily sped around him.

I don't believe it has been settled as of yet (or announced)

In addition, he may want to return here and play for Vrabel and Marrone

He seems pretty durable for a 36 year old guy - he started every game for the Giants last year.

We actually had to pay him a bit more than he got with NY last year too but you're not going to find a 2025 starter to pick up easily at this time of year.

So if it's never settled he would be done for the year anyway.

But it's reported only a sprained MCL so it will be settled.

Ruprich was a bubble player in camp, fighting for the backup spot, and when he would be out for the rest of meaningful camp they moved on to Van Roten.

In addition, he may want to return here and play for Vrabel and Marrone

Anything could happen, but in NFL language the team let him know what they thought.

If Ruprich has a shot at an NFL roster or practice squad he would likely take it.

He's gone unless no one else is interested and they want him back. This was the team cutting ties with Ruprich. They could later sign any player in the league for that matter.

For sure there are no plans for him to replace Van Roten which was the initial post.

Van Roten played for the Raiders under Josh in 2023.

Also has AFCE experience playing for both the Jets and Bills, and started his career with the Packers when Wolf was there. Hasn't missed a game the last 3 years as a starter. I'm liking this guy.

Seems like that Steal Marcus Bryant late last year; is able to make them bring Caleb Lomu along very slowly.

They needed another body with two guys going down. I still hope they’ll take a hard look at the two rookie centers, but they have a reliable option in Roten for now. Was never high on Ruprich, so the line still looks fine.

Ben Brown will be back early this year. I don't think they need to sign anyone else. I think we have 9 solid oline options now with 2 quality back ups at each spot.
I don't understand your math. Five starters and two backups at each of tackle, guard, and center makes for eleven.

Say what?
Typical rookie learning curve. Coaches will fix this unless Caleb is a moron (unlikely)
