Patriots hosting OL Greg Van Roten

Pats need bodies badly. They can’t afford one injury on that OL.

I like how you think a tackle can just slide into guard like that. lol.

I said second backup.

They slide players around on the OL line all the time. Did it with Wilson last year. Just did it with Hudson. Word early was the team was considering it.

Don't you watch the games?

I mean, what choice did they really have? There's nobody else in the building who's even an NFL player, never mind one worthy of being a backup or even on the damn practice squad.

And they still need another one... A younger one this time...
Yeah, but as old as Van Roten is, he was more durable than most of our OL last year as he started all 17 games last season.

We could do far worse.

His PFF grade is 65 - not that I agree with their ranking, though for comparison, Wilson's grade last year was 50

I'm glad they signed him now rather than wait until after Week 1 - though that's where we may see some more becoming available as rosters shrink

Interior line vs tackles CAN be two different skillsets.

It's why it's noted favorably in scouting reports if they can slide anywhere on the line. If they could all do it, nobody would think about putting it down in notes.

Finally!

I guess that Vrabel thought that now that Rupcich is gone, he felt that he needed to sign the next best player.

So is there no faith in Marcus Bryant if he had to have any playing time this season?

You really have no clue. Wilson did it last year and it was a abysmal. Did you not see the results? If you think he looked good a left guard, you are an idiot. Hudson was horrible against the Colts. How do I know? I was frikin there watching the game. You don't just slide a rookie tackle into a position he has never played while his is try to lean two positions in a new offense at the pro level. You seriously have no clue.

Seems like a solid pick up for a decent price. The guy was competent starter (according to the stats shown) as late as last year. We are asking him to be a QUALITY backup. At least now Moses will have someone he can relate to in the OL meetings. Overall I'd call it a job well done by the FO.

BTW- When watching the clip on Van Roten's play, I couldn't help noticing that the RG was in constant motion (Making some sort of signals, I guess) and was STILL moving when the ball was snapped. My belief is that the OL is supposed to be set for a full second before the ball is snapped. Have I missed the changing of this rule????

I've seen this happening by several teams the last couple of years, and it is NEVER called. The Eagles are a team IIRC that does this all the time. It drives me crazy. Does this bother anyone else?

Curious on the money, but seems like a good signing. Pretty much the top backup guard immediately, with Ben Brown being next up once he is healthy. Also worth remembering Onwenu is still a free agent after this year, so if they can’t extend him and like Van Roten’s play this year then he could be a potential stopgap for one more season. Hopefully Onwenu sticks around though.

Nice. Depth issue is solved. He can start in this league for sure.

Ben Brown will be back early this year. I don't think they need to sign anyone else. I think we have 9 solid oline options now with 2 quality back ups at each spot.

Not at Center. They don't even have one there, never mind two.

Let's be real. This is an excellent pick even if he isn't a QUALITY backup. He replaced Rupcich on the roster (who had replaced Wallace). Getting a 2025 NFL starter to replaced Rupcich is a HUGE plus.

Dr Bob, I haven't heard anyone have confidence on Brown returning early.

We now have a backup center, likely better than Brown who will be our emergency #3 center and #4 OG. We often have such players as our #5 IOL.

And yes, I'm rooting for Brown to come back soon. We need the extra injury protection. For now, the 3rd center can be active, or not.
