Curran: "In my estimation... [Gonzo would like to] be treated as if he's at the table in 2027." [previous title: "say goodbye to gonzo"]

I was at the game tonight. Gonzo was nowhere to be seen.

That is SOOOOO shallow, that I weep for his generation. Why can't they just be happy being EXTREMELY highly paid for playing a HS sport. It seems so individual and self-centered for a game that is so TEAM oriented, where so much of one's individual success depends on 10 other players doing their jobs.
Same reason they can’t be happy losing the Super Bowl, or a conference championship. By your logic they should be happy doing extremely well making it so deep into the playoffs when most other teams don’t. Why can’t they be happy being second best in the NFL?

Do you weep when they can't walk without assistance after age 45?

Do you care that they're one hit away, legitimately, from being crippled for life?

Or how about when they're 50 and their head's so filled with CTE that they turn into someone else, and suicide's the best option? This literally just happened with Jordan Devey.

Yeah, what *I* don't understand are people who don't want these players to get every last cent they can, for their short window when they can make life-changing money for them and their family for generations to come, putting their bodies on the line every day, risking permanent injury, just to make @patfanken happy, and just to make the owners and the league more money than they can conceive of - all on their backs.

I want players to get every last cent they can, but also be in a position that they are happy, successful and a community positive outside of football. as the contracts start to exceed stupid money, is grabbing every last dollar as important as the other 3?
Gonzo is on the verge of getting $100m guaranteed before his is 29 years old. more than likely, there will be another contract in his future. His career earnings should exceed $200m.
someone is giving him very bad advice.

Seems simple, you want to be treated like you are signing a 2027 contract, then sign it this time next year, and risk injury this year. I’m sure it isn’t that simple, and this report is probably being driven from the Patriots front office to put pressure on Gonzo, but if he is looking for a true market changing contract, he is negotiating with the wrong team

Beware of Patriots Kraft propaganda when it comes to these contracts they're always dinking around with the guarantees and have a long track record of not paying the true premium positions top of the market contracts very often.

I'm not saying it's not true but i'm definitely saying if Gonzalez has such unrealistic demands he's asking for something a corner hasn't got before then there's no way another team will trade for him and give up multiple high assets and give him the contract he wants.
Not in Today's NFL: with his Elite Skills and Age there will always be a taker.

When you look at a football field, these corners take away an entire quadrant of it.

Sure you can scheme things up, but when you're getting burned repeatedly by Puka Nacua and Jaxson Smith Njigba, it's frustrating.

We have Speedy (I hate the name Gonzo. It reminds me of the Muppet that I used to watch will my daughter) signed though the 2027 season. We can tag him in 2028.
So the Patriots can negotiate in good faith with him during that time. Unless he want to do a long term holdout, he will be in a Patriot uniform for the next 3 seasons.
The Patriots should pay him fair market value. I don't think he's the best at his position right now. If he wants to holdout, then the Patriots should trade him. There's always a team that will overvalued talent and will give a lot for him.

And who in the is playing corner for us if we trade him? Ant Richardson went 11/14 with 1 pick that was a tip. His fumble was just sloppy, but he ran for 53 yards and a TD. Gonzo is not getting traded this year. Carlton Davis is overpaid, but Gonzo and Davis on the field are a great duo. Gonzo has also shown no signs of holding out.

Gonzo would be a fool to get onto the field with out a new deal.
practice or game
he is getting bad advice

Gonzo wants the best of both worlds - long term security and eye watering AAV. Dude needs to pick one and get on the field.

or

Pats should take 4 first round picks and move on with the preseason. This is starting to drag on too long.

How do you know this? Did you talk to him or his agent? You can make up total trash about a person if you want, just like the media, but it does not make it true. The guy said he is not talking. And you are an fool if you think we can compete this year without him. We have poor secondary depth as it is. We are in trouble if he is gone.

There is no need to trade him if he doesn't holdout. I doubt if he holdout this year.
Honestly he is not the best at his position. He's probably 5th best. I'm not worried about the preseason. In fact, it's better that he doesn't play preseason games.
I like him as a player and what I know about him as a person. However, business is business.

Bro…if they were offered 4 1st round picks for anyone not named Drake Maye you take it before the other team comes down from whatever high they are on.

Never happen.

2 1’s and a 2 is likely best you’d get and I’d probably take it.

but he is making a very bad business decision.
we don't know details, but we can certainly assume he has either a 4 year or 5 year deal available with an AAV in that low-mid $30's area.
Lets say it is $33m.
Gonzo has either $132m or $165m on the table, with certainly close to, or slightly more than $100m guaranteed.
If he wants the AAV tied to the yearly cap increases, lets assume over 4 years, the cap increases on average 7%??
So Gonzo is looking for $2-3M per season.
over the course of 4 seasons, he would be quibbling over $8-$12m

simply foolish
bad advice
potentially what is and has been a sterling reputation, could be soiled over bad advice

would his trade value now be impacted given his contract demands?
if Gonzo is holding out over a salary predicated on cap increases, is any team willing to do that?

if what Curran is reporting is true, and Gonzo wants his deal to inflate year over year based on the cap inflating, I see him playing on the tag next year or sitting out.
too bad.
if true, I believe he is getting bad advice
Gonzo is great, but he isn't change the way football pays players great.
IMHO it is a risk.

Gonzo gets more next year than he would this year ASSUMING he stays healthy and plays at or near his previous levels.

I gotta tell ya, having Gonzo playing for his next contract wouldn’t exactly be the worst thing to happen short term for New England, although 2027 could be a very expensive summer for the Family Kraft.
