Player Signing TE Hunter Henry signs 2 year extension

Kida surprised because of his age. He is a very good TE, but he is also 31 and will be 32 in early December. My guess is he won't see the second year of his extension, but hopefully he won't hit the age wall next year.
Agreed. But he probably has another decent year left, or at least the team sees it that way. Good signing imo. Maye has chemistry with him.

It does something for him insofar as it lets his agent report a higher guaranteed figure in the press release, even though in reality it was money he was effectively guaranteed anyway.

Looked at another way, it would be more like a 1 year extension for $7M guaranteed with some sweeteners on top, and then an option year at the end. The posts mention finishing his career in NE so he may feel he is close to retirement.

In any case, we will know soon enough when the details come out.
So you think Henry would sign for below market because his agent can make up a phony guarantee to report to the media?

His market is not 1 year 7 million that’s the entire point.

Did I say that?

I said that's the reason why you'd guarantee the salary in this instance, not the reason he signed the entire contract. I don't know where you're getting that. Yes, such a deal would be a hometown discount.

Again we will have to wait to see when the details come out. I could absolutely be wrong, but if all of the guarantees are NEW money only in the new years and nothing in 2026, on top of his 2026 existing salary, then that seems a bit rich to me. We will find out.

you?
wth are you doing here?
say hello to my old friends on the Jets forum, please
I am here because I wanted some news on the Patriots training camp day by day, and there was none coming in on the other site. Since every thread became a pissing match between you and (name any poster here) that forum has had minimal conversations. Thanks for the "Kind" welcome, I see you make friends fast everywhere you post!

good.

years / money make sense.

one of the better free agent signings of the last decade

I thought his play might have slipped as last season progressed, but I'm still thumbs up on this.

slipped? or was it the effect of having Diggs on board?

Honestly... less than he could have gotten by a lot if he played 1 more year here and produced... which i thought he would do. He wanted to stay and not uproot things to finish out his career. Took a minor pay cut to do it. He probably left 4-6M on the table if he instead decided to test free agency. But i understand him not doing that.

You are proposing that 7 million of the 14 mill guaranteed is a rouse to guarantee this years money the agent can fool no one by announcing a larger number.

If that is the case, then he just added 2 years to his contract with only a 7 mill guarantee. That is not his market, not close.
2 years 16-20 mill with 14 guarantee seems exactly like the going rate

Evan Engram last year signed a 2 year 23 mill with 16.5 guaranteed.
Isaiah Likely got 3/40 with 27 mill guaranteed.
Mark Andrews 3/39 24 guaranteed

You really think Henry is signing for 7 mill of new guarantees?

Yes. At this stage in his career, every guaranteed dollar is worth it.

Don’t really have anything else to say about it. We will see when the details come out.

Why would he sign for far below his market value?
The only answer I am getting is because they faked it up to guarantee his 2026 salary which is 99% guaranteed already in order to be able to make an announcement that he got more than he did. I do not understand why that would matter to him.

Love Henry & how he’s carried himself during his tenure, but hopefully he gracefully ages/settles into TE2 by the end of the year/next year.
This whole transaction was an example on how to conduct yourself playing for Vrabel.

Henry has been nothing but a professional on and off the field.

Yes it can happen. They did not explicitly say that the guarantees are part of the new years. They could be guaranteeing money in the existing year remaining. Often times, extensions come with modifications to the existing years still on the books in the form of pay bumps, guaranteeing salaries etc.
Exactly right.

Often times the salary in the final year of a contract is purposely elevated so it can be converted into Signing Bonus. Some folks are saying that Henry signed below market.

Prior to this extension Henrys contract ranked 18th among TEs per Overthecap. https://overthecap.com/player/hunter-henry/4748

Including this extension Henrys contract ranks 20th per Sportrac. Hunter Henry Contract, Salary & Cap Hit 2026 | Spotrac

Details from Schefter need to be seen for the unvarnished truth, but to me Henry is getting a fair deal. Henry does have "LTBE" incentives too.

from what has been published so far, it does indeed appear to be this year and next.
there also appears to be guarantees totaling $14.5m, which do include this years base salary.
there is also the sign bonus, which most likely he received upfront to sign a friendly deal.

my assumption is there are "likely to be attained" incentives, including the standard work out dollars, on the roster/game day dollars, and next years base guaranteeing 5 days after the league year ends.
I would also assume there are attainable bonus dollars for individual statistics and team goals.
It would not surprise me if Henry remains healthy, and is able to have a season that for him is somewhat close to last year, he would realize $20m in total.
a pretty fair and easy deal for him to take.
his gamble in my opinion is what will his usage rate look like with the new targets on board? Brown, Doubs, Raridon, as well as the RB duo, Pop, Hollins (maybe), Boutte (maybe)
Pats locked up a locker room leader, a mentor, a captain, and a solid performer each and every game.

time to address Gonzo

What is “published” that you are basing this on? A 2 year extension is 2 more years, ie through 2028 not the year he is already under contract plus one. That would be extending the contract 1 year.

Yep, that's another option that occurs - converting this year's salary into a signing bonus to create cap space this year. The player gets the same amount of money but it creates new room for the team, and the agent gets to report "X amount of guaranteed dollars" even though it was really money the player was about to get anyway.

Exactly and instead of receiving the money per game, the player is paid up front in 1 lump sum since it is signing bonus. That much money invested now in this market must be a pretty penny.
