Patriots Injury News Carlton Davis in concussion protocol

That's worrisome. He's penalty-prove, but a real asset (and as fragile as Italian stemware [Huh?])

I hope you realize that two of his DPIs in the playoffs have saved probable touchdowns. He bit on the receiver's short throw and held him so he couldn't catch the ball and score. It was unfortunate that they happened when the ball was in the air (or just about to be thrown against Houston, wasn't clear), but it's what he should have done in that circumstance. Better is Gonzales, who can make up the distance, but Davis can't, so better to prevent the touchdown.

Welp. We’ll see how that one unfolds.

Let's hope Davis III Clears it I don't want to see Automatic Austin: who could make it a long afternoon.

Yep. I'm glad we have him, but it's a bit of a roller coaster. So it goes.

Well we've basically got him for another 2 years - so hopefully he figures out the penalty thing as it can cancel out his takeaways.

I get it though - he goes at everything like a mad man at times and that can be good and bad

Still prefer Carlton Davis III over our alternatives.

Can they just wear the guardian caps and reduce all these head injuries?
I was listening to someone talk about them and they don't really reduce the big hits. They're more for repetitive injuries, so like offensive lineman banging into defensive linemen over and over.

If I had to guess I'd say he's only here for one more year (next year). None of his 2027 compensation is guaranteed. He has a 2027 cap number of $22M but they can cut him with only $5.5M dead money for the remaining amortization of the signing bonus we paid him this year. He'll be 30 that season. It's not an outrageous number to keep him at but I'm thinking they can find a cheaper alternative to start opposite Gonzo. Remember, that's the year Gonzo's hypothetical extension that I imagine we try to sign him to this offseason will kick in, and even if we don't extend him that will be his big 5th year rookie option season where his cap hit jumps. So a 30 year old highly paid CB opposite him might be something they look to get out of. But it's not like they NEED to move on if they don't have a viable replacement.

I doubt he "figures out" the penalty thing. It's just who he is. He's a physical corner who's a little slow. It leads to penalties, and that's why he's not a top flight CB. Still a very good #2 though, one of the better in the league.

Was Davis really a big hit? Or was it one of those hits that are barely above threshold level but produce measurable symptoms in the moment?

There are really two dimensions to worry about. Short term, concussion protocol next game consequences, and long term CTE consequences. It sounds like the discussion you heard was saying the guardian caps are focused on the latter more than promising help with the former. That’s not clear about how much they might help with the former as well. Thing is, the latter is the existential threat to the league, so that’s what they’re going to promote as being improved.

Hopefully he plays.

The big clue is if he practices today. According to the protocol, he should practice in a red jersey today, if he is symptom free after that, he is on his way to be cleared. If he isn't out on the practice field today, I would start to worry about him playing on Sunday.

Davis should clear. The ONLY reason they put him in the protocol is because he asked for a hand up on the last play he was in. I said this immediately after they announced that, again, the Sky doctor had called down and that Davis was taken to the locker-room.

It wasn't even a hit. On the play in question, Davis asked for a hand up from a teammate. Like players do on nearly every play.. It was announced that the Sky Doctor was the one who called down to the sidelines and had Davis taken to the back for evaluation. Just like they did with Gonzalez.
