The Athletics' Chad Graff posted a nice little puff piece of Stef Diggs... at the end of the article, he surmises that Diggs will (possibly?) start the season on the PUP list due to the ACL injury he suffered last year... from the article:

It always seemed likeliest that Diggs would open the season on the physically unable to perform list (meaning he’d be out at least the first four games), but perhaps the optimism from his spring performances can translate to an increased role in camp and maybe even open the door for Diggs to open the season on the Week 1 roster.

If he does start the season on the PUP, then we are off to a slow start points wise... To my thinking, it doesn't really matter if he isn't 100% at the beginning of the year, as long as he's on the field... If he is there, teams need to account for him... Scratch CB1 from the opposing defenses having to cover a decoy... If he is not there though, given the overall average WR talent we have, defenses can again try to stack the box to slow the offense down...

The upcoming Training Camp will provide us a real look into how far along he is in terms of recovery... What will his work load be... Hows he look in one on ones, scrimmages, etc... Camp can't come soon enough...

From what I have seen in the practices and the get together in NC I dont think he is far off. I don't believe he will be involved in any preseason game but the first game is September 7th giving him roughly another 7 weeks. If he doesn't hit setbacks and his rehab continues to trend at the same space I am about 70% certain he will be on the field in week one.

Hoping he does... Will will find out soon...
Not sure if you saw Bourne's video, but he looks like he's ready to go. My guess is that the team might take things slow at the start of camp and put him on PUP, but I'd be surprised if he wasn't out there by week one. He looked pretty good out there, at least based on that footage.

Is this seriously what people have been drawing their Diggs PUP conclusions? If so, lol. People are acting like Graff revealed some new information from a Diggs medical evaluation indicating that there was a setback or something. In actuality, he literally just stated the obvious that based on the timeline of when Diggs had the ACL tear, there was always a possibility he could start on the PUP. For f**** sake people.

Same, no games but will practice This has the benefit of getting baker full tilt after the last preseason game.

Actually, he didn't even say that. He said in the past there was some concern stated about starting on PUP and based on what we've seen perhaps we'll see increased likelihood of him coming back earlier. Not directed at you but following up on your last sentence FFS people reading comprehension is fundamental.

I agree. Objectively he’s looking good and there’s no clear reason to hold him back. If he’s on PUP he can’t practice with the team, tight? So there’s a downside with keeping him out. If there’s no medical reason then they’ll probably turn him loose, and it doesn’t look like there is.

Subjectively I’m ambivalent. I’d like to see the best team possible on the field day one. OTOH I’d like to see how the other WRs step up if he’s not out there. It could give some of the newcomers, or even the veterans, a chance to shine that they won’t otherwise get.

It will be what it will be.

He can look great in workouts and the muscles around the injured knee can be in great shape, but the ACL ligaments may not be ready yet to handle full speed cutting in full pads. So there'd be increased risk of reinjury if rushed.

At least that's what I think I understand of how this works.

For him to go on pup he would not be able to participate in a single practice.
That makes no sense. Why would you hold him back to fit pup rules?

He would have zero time working with Maye, executing the offense.
To gain what? Having someone else inactive on the 53 man roster for 4 weeks?

PUP isn’t an advantage it’s a major disadvantage.

First and foremost, it's a medical decision. Does neither side any good for him to be rushed back and play like **** because he isn't physically ready and potentially damage the rest of his career.

Once that's out of the way though, don't see them holding him back. Maybe in the dynasty era where we were loaded with talent and making the playoffs was a formality you could slow play it and save the roster spot if you thought the guy was going to be out for a few weeks. There is some benefit to being able to keep your 54th guy through the first 6 weeks, knowing that in that time SOMEONE will get hurt to open a space when you need to bring the first player back off PUP.

I don't think this team is in position though to lose their best receiver for more time than they need to just to keep their 54th man. Our 54th man isn't good enough and trying to build a winning culture gets a big boost from actually winning which takes your best players being out there.

He should participate to the degree he is medically able. Keeping him out of practice until the 5th or 6th week of the season is just plaing wrong. Even if he isn't ready to play in Game One, he should be on the 53 and brought in when he is ready.

If necessary, he can be put on IR for as long as needed. That is much, much different than PUP.

In our world, a player doesn't practice until he is 100% ready to be a top contributor.

That is a practical impossibility. If we want Diggs to be a top contributor when he is physically ready, he should at end practice and participate to the degree that he is able. If ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY, he can be on IR.

When I tore my ACL the Dr. said it will take 6 months to not think about it and 1 year to fully heal.
Saying that I am not an athlete and most of my daily steps are to the refrigerator
He looks really good right now and is an elite athlete working with the best rehab specialists there are.
But will the team take precautions because of the medical knowledge they have concerning these types of injuries
We will soon find out
