OT: Should the 49ers consider firing Shanahan for Belichick?

Sigh. Did you watch the fecking game? Chris Jones single-handedly ruined several Niners plays. Key 3rd down plays/ Key scoring plays. Would another coach have blocked him better? Niners Oline was a liability other than Williams who struggled in the 1st quarter. Ugly little fact that nonbody talked about since they were too busy blowing Reid and Mahomes.

If he kicks it to KC, they score, 9ers score, and then KC scores for the win; everyone criticizing him would criticize him for deferring. Losing HC can never win on his decisions. It's a universal rule.
If the scores are FG, sure. If they’re trading TDs, the 2nd team might be better off going to 2 and ending the game right there one way or another. Especially if Mahomes is the QB getting the ball in the 3rd possession.

He was their best player yesterday

That’s what happens when you let your defense stay on the field for 9mins after throwing passes on all but four plays in the third quarter
Yes that game was lost in the 3rd quarter. They needed to put that game away when Mahomes threw that pick

I don't know. You are talking about the third possession in overtime. The odds of getting to a third possession is pretty slim. Under the new rules, you are guaranteed the ball if you have second possession. It is far more likely one team outscores the other team in the first two possessions.
Would have been their second possession, but I get what you’re saying.

And if they don't convert, then he gets crucified. It is what it is. He made his choice and D couldn't hold KC to a fg, which they did all game (aside from TD on TO inside the RZ).

Shannahan's explanation makes sense. If both teams score, he gets the ball back for the win. They just needed to hold KC to a fg, which they'd done all game.
If fuzz nuts had deferred and KC scored a TD, fuzz nuts would have known that he had 4 downs each series to keep his TD drive going.

BB would have deferred, but he is a great coach.

The KC defense held Miami, Buffalo and Baltimore to 10 points in the 2nd half of their playoff games.

D punches your ticket to the Super Bowl.

Five of the last six Super Bowl winning QB's - Brady and Mahomes.

Of course, you can't have a crappy defense to win it, but the Patriots defense was good too.

If fuzz was banking on his D holding KC to a FG, give KC the ball first and then fuzz could have won the game with a TD.

There were 7 fgs kicked in the game (4 by KC). The strategy has to be based on only having to kick a fg for the win. Two chances at a fg to win is the correct call.

No

They have a problem at QB though, Purdy is good but maybe he is just good enough to take you to the playoffs.

I thought he would turn into a pumpkin this season, he didn't, kid is legit, legitimally good, but not a top dollar QB.

He didn't fold under pressure though. After KC took the lead late in the 3rd, he drove them down the field for a TD in the 4th to take back the lead. Then after KC tied, he drove down to take the lead again with a fg.

Unfortunately, he was going up against Mahomes. He'll learn from this experience.

Great coaches don't blow 28-3 leads and constantly mess up in the SB as HC.

Bill messed up in the Eagles SB. But he had 5 rings at the time.

Shanahan consistently messes up
By definition, if you are a successful NFL coach, you are a great coach. You are in the top .001 of your profession.

I'm left wondering if ANY of the people saying Shanahan sucks and is a loser have had sustained success in their own chosen fields.

Sort of surprised the Marv Levy comparisons haven't started ... that's basically sort of where he's at now at this point.

It was only five years ago that people were doubting Andy Reid after the Chiefs lost to us yet again in the playoffs. Now they want to crown Andy Reid. Winning the big game changes narratives very quickly.

I went with Schottenheimer and Dungy as examples with one obviously finally getting over the hump. So Shanahan still has a chance but his duds are piling up.

He's referring to the third overall possession, the one that comes after both teams have it once and match scores.

I get that. I am saying the odds of getting to that third possession is slim because the odds are far greater the game would end after the second possession due one team scoring more points than the other when each have a possession.
