OT: Should the 49ers consider firing Shanahan for Belichick?

Here is his explanation. Of course - if Mahomes got a TD on the opening drive and the 49ers match it on their drive, why not go for 2 and decide the game then and there?

I don't know. You are talking about the third possession in overtime. The odds of getting to a third possession is pretty slim. Under the new rules, you are guaranteed the ball if you have second possession. It is far more likely one team outscores the other team in the first two possessions.

I think we know the answer to that already. Shanny blew a 10 point 4th quarter lead with Jimmy G as QB, one season later he trades 2 future first rounders plus his current pick to move up to get Trey Lance. Lance bombed but Shanahan was able to win with Purdy. He also tried getting Brady this past offseason. If he doesn’t think Purdy can continue to grow, I think he’ll swing for the fences again.
Fair point esp on Brady…if he thought Purdy was “Him”, as the kids say, he wouldn’t have been trying to sign Brady.

Lance…that one was strange. Wonder if that was Lynch, or if Shany really thought the kid was special.

Another point supporting the crapshoot of drafting a QB high…SO hard to know what’s real vs smoke and mirrors.

BB would destroy the culture and togetherness of that team within the first 3 games. they would not even make the playoffs.
Shanahan is a great coach and the SB losses do not change that.
Shanny is a loser.

Players play. Someone else said Brady would have beaten them by 14. This is probably accurate. Purdy is a fine QB but he's not The Guy.

Not saying they should 100% do it.

But if your the owner, would you consider it?

It would definitely send shockwaves throughout the league.
If the 9ers didn't sign Brady when they had the chance (the real problem), they're not signing Bill. GTFOH with this nonsense.

He's referring to the third overall possession, the one that comes after both teams have it once and match scores.

Shanny cannot win the big game
His EGO is too big.
If he ran the ball 35% of the time to open the 2nd half he would have won
He did what he did in the 28-3 game. He let his ego of going with what got him there at all costs turn W’s into L’s

BB would enter with a team that is built to run on a West Coast Offense. Not sure if that would work.
He would definately be a better game manager. Would also have made sure his players would have known the new playoff OT rules. Would have probably deferred. I think he would have thought it was more important to get the ball second instead of thinking getting it third was more important. Being able to go for it on forth brings way too much value into OT than worrying about who gets it third

I'd fire Kyle, personally. I feel like he's peaked at this point and he's never going to get the 49ers over the hump. Will the roster ever be better? The Chiefs were not some kind of juggernaut. He will only face harder opponents in any future title game.

I would just have a hard time continuing to bang my head against the wall with him like this. Will the players keep buying in? "THIS time we're NOT à choke, I promise!!!"
I mean, the biggest turning point was the TO on the punt, which was 100% an unlucky break for the 9ers with the ball hitting a guy on the foot which led to the only TD KC scored in regular time. Until that point, the Chiefs were held to two fgs w/ the 9ers about to get the ball w/ 2:42 left in the 3rd.

Sometimes lady luck isn't on your side, and she seems to hate Shannahan.

I understand Shanhans reasoning but I would defer 100% of the time. They should have the same rule in the regular season too.

Blew a 28-3 lead in Atlanta, then blew a 10 point second-half lead with the Niners TWICE. You can point the finger at questionable play calling in all 3 games, and he's the guy calling the plays. He called it well early to get the lead then crapped his pants with the lead, which is generally what he did in every game.
They never had a 10 pt lead in the 2nd half. They had a 10 pt lead for 4 min. of the 1st half. Then a 4 pt lead in the 3rd qtr until the fiasco w/ the punt. Game was tight as expected.

Purdy did fine. He was poised even after getting hit continuously and made a few key throws. Shanahan just blew the game in the 3rd quarter not running the ball at all. He choked big time
I must've watched a different game than the rest of you. I saw the 9ers hold a Mahomes led O to 6 pts through 42.5 minutes until the punt TO, which was just an unlucky bounce.

The biggest difference in the game was KC scoring off a TO and 9ers not being able to do the same after the Mahomes INT.

They are ripping Fuzz Nuts Shanny taking the ball in OT after winning the toss. Even if Fuzz Nuts team scored a TD they dont win because the opponent gets the ball and now they know how many points are needed so they can call plays accordingly.

And, some of his players claimed that they did not know the current OT rules. Old out of touch Reid went over the new OT rules very first day of 2023 training camp.
Shannahan's explanation makes sense. If both teams score, he gets the ball back for the win. They just needed to hold KC to a fg, which they'd done all game.

The defense was gassed though

Well, not a muffed punt exactly, as the player didn't clear out of the way when he got the call to move. So, a bad ST mental error. The 9er returned did himself no favors either by trying to pick the ball up
Lol, dumbass, he was forced to pick it up once it hit his player.

If he kicks it to KC, they score, 9ers score, and then KC scores for the win; everyone criticizing him would criticize him for deferring. Losing HC can never win on his decisions. It's a universal rule.

Reading through the comments on Shanahan vs Reid (young vs. old), it took Reid 20 years to win his first title with Mahomes and not facing Brady and/or Bill.

Shanahan has been to 4 NFCCG's and 2 Super Bowls within the last 5 years. He's doing just fine.

If the game goes to a third possession then he looks brilliant
The way that game was going where it looked like defenses were getting gassed. Offenses were having better luck in the forth quarter and moving the ball
That would make me want to have the ball second. Having the option of going for it on 4th down.
Also if the other team scored a TD first. You would have the option to go for a 2 point conversion to win it. Especially if you did not trust your D on the 3rd possession.

Shanahan is better than Belichick with a mid tier quarterback, why would they do that?

Bill doesn't sniff that game with Brock Purdy, if they did that i'd instantly fire Mayo and hire Shanahan.

Sure would be nice to win 12 games every year with average quarterbacking.
