Assistant HC would be a promotion for Flores, right?
Doesn’t matter to the Vikings. Since he’s a coordinator, they can block him from anything other than head coach.

(Assuming he’s under contract.)

My apologies if this has already been posted. According to Reiss, both Belichick sons have been offered the chance to return:

Reiss: "Steve Belichick and Brian Belichick, Bill's sons, have been told they've earned the opportunity to remain with the Patriots if they choose to do so. Mayo and Steve have a close friendship, so the projected fit on staff would be as an assistant head coach/senior adviser type. Brian, who came up through scouting and most recently served as safeties coach from 2020 to 2023, was still showing up at Gillette Stadium late this past week."

“We have a great relationship. They have the option to stay,” Mayo said of Steve and Brian Belichick. “They also have the option to go with their father, if they want to. Still kind of going through it. I have a good relationship with both of them. They’re great coaches. We’ll see what happens.”

Special teams is getting a new coordinator, too:

"As for New England’s special-teams coordinator role, the Patriots have reportedly interviewed or requested to interview Falcons special teams coach Marquice Williams, ex-Giants special teams coordinator Thomas McGaughey and Rams special teams assistant Jeremy Springer."

That's why Mayo was a good choice. Anyone else you bring in would've revamped the entire system and it would've taken 3 years. At least now, we can focus on the offense (finally). Maybe we shave off a year to become competitive. But yea, need the talent which I'm confident they'll bring in.
If the goal is to have a smooth transition while introducing new ideas, Caley seems like a good option. He has experience with the Pats system and a couple of years with the Rams. He was thought to be an OC candidate while he was here which makes him a virtual promote from within candidate.

That ^ love Caley's experience in our ancient system and his experience in McVay's modern system best of both worlds.

If we are moving to a more west coast/Shannahan style Offense. That probably means we will use of a Zone blocking scheme and I am not sure that very many of our current OL will be able to make that transition. If thats the case it is imperative that we draft enough OL to make the transition. I am pretty sure that they tried to implement the Zone blocking scheme under Fatty Matty Patty and that was a disaster.

I feel like this changes the draft strategy a huge amount, so all this we need to take MJH or we need a QB at 3 no question probably needs to stop until we get an OC. If we try to go with the Zone scheme without bringing in the proper O-linemen, I don't think it matters who we have at QB or WR. I that being said, I agree that we need another QB but would be content letting Jacoby Bissett be our bridge while the rest of the team gets built up, so we do not waste a rookie QB salary on the books.

We could try running a West Coast/Shannahan offense with the Gap blocking scheme.

There are currently 8 offensive coordinator openings...

Us
CIN
CLE
LV
NO
PHI
PIT
SEA

Personally, I think every single one of the other openings is a better situation to walk into. So far we've interviewed 4 guys (Caley, Pitcher, Robinson, Waldron). One of them (Waldron) already filled the CHI vacancy. Pitcher and Robinson each have interviewed other places that, IMO, represent better opportunities. Caley hasn't been interviewed by anyone but us.

Let's just take what I'm saying at the face value instead of talking in circles around it like everyone is... we are one of many teams trying to land an OC in this hiring cycle. I believe our situation is at or near the bottom in terms of desirable landing spots. There are dozens and dozens of guys who could reasonably be hired as OC and I'm not suggesting we won't be able to get one of them. But every year that are a few candidates most sought after and all I'm saying is that I don't like our chances of landing one of those guys because if someone has multiple suitors then they've probably got better options. And having to settle for our 2nd choice would be worst than the 1st. And the 3rd would be worse than the 2nd. And the 4th worse than the 3rd. And on and on like that...

It's pure denial to pretend like we aren't at or near the bottom of desirable OC openings IMO, and there's no way to spin that as anything but a negative for us. It's really very simple.
Generally, the OWNER is a major consideration for someone coming in at a high level. Kraft is pretty welI-regarded. I think for someone trying to make a splash, the Pats would be attractive. Good ownership, good defense already in place which should give your offense the ball in favorable situations, nowhere to go but UP for the O (a guy coming here could really put his stamp on the offense immediately, and having a new HC and coming into an abysmal recent history (although with the #3 pick and lots of CASH) could buy him a lot of leash to make things go.

Was that the players or the coaching? If you read between the lines on the Bourne situation, it was because Bourne tried to coach Matt on a system BOURNE KNEW, but Matt didn't.

I don't know who on the current line fits that scheme physically.

We also interviewed Shane Waldron who got the Bears gig and Gerald Alexander a secondary coach from the Steelers. This is according to NESN as of this morning.

Supposedly Strange and Onwenu were deemed the most athletic and suitable for zone blocking. Not sure about the rookies.

Any word on Rooney rule interviews for OC? Not seeing anything.

In Strange’s case, we know McVay and Snead were interested in him in 2022, so presumably they thought he could do it. Although interestingly enough, McVay moved to a gap scheme in 2023. Maybe that was his plan with Strange for 2022 but it was thwarted when he was off the board.

I am not sure we are required to do so for OC as the rule is "at least one minority candidate for ALL coordinator positions".

Besides, how many minority OCs are out there other than Eric B, Thomas Brown, and Brian Johnson?

Mayo's Senior Advisor will make sure that he is in compliance with any rules. After all, and interviews can be a 5 minute Zoom call.

We need to get the rams o line coach
What they do with their o line is amazing
Dotson is having a career year under him outta nowhere
They did not invest much in the line but they are protecting and blocking very well

We turned him down in favor of Klemm this offseason. It’s Ryan Wendell, his first year as Rams o-line coach.
