Sidy Sow - Conflicting Opinions

Yes or no, we dont know the line call and thus what Sow's blocking responsibility was?

Yes or no, its possible his assignment was to punch the inside guys shoulder to help his athleticlly inferior guard make a difficult reach block?

Yes or no, its acceptable pass blocking from a tackle to take a speed rusher 5 yards upfield away from his QB?

Now i can acknowledge its possible Sow should have taken an aggresive drop step and done a better job of walling Anderson off so he couldnt bend around the edge and he made a mistake punching the DT first, he is a rookie playing in his first NFL game.

However, i find it more likely based on the film that the guard had been being beat like a drum and they wanted to take away inside pressure first. A sound tactic in my mind as then all Sow has to do is get a hand on the DE and push him past the spot so your QB can step up. If thats the case then i would grade Sow on the play an A-. He is probably the 5th lineman i would blame on that play for why it went awful. Could he have gotten a better punch on the DT so the guard could get him? Maybe. Could he have pushed Anderson another yard further upfield? Maybe. But you are nitpicking and expecting perfection if you do.

So without debating play by play a person can make an analysis just based on what their eyes see the entire game. I only offered the one example because I was asked by Kasmir, and that blew up from there.

Here is ONE draft analysis that I got from googling, and it's my opinion as well after watching the entire game. Weaknesses: Off balance and overextends. Lacks footwork in space (Tony Pauline).

This was my take of Sow at tackle (Pauline's analysis was as a guard). I didn't mean to say Anderson was "lazy." He might have been working or setting up something, but it looked to me like even though Sow won some reps (oddly on technique), he was off balance nearly every play, and NFL players will chew that up when it counts. I don't know if it's something he can overcome.

I wish folks would more often link to their sources when quoting others.

So I did that for you:

Tony Pauline’s Scouting Report for Sidy Sow

Strengths: Wide-bodied offensive guard who flashed dominance the past three seasons. Fires off the snap, bends his knees, and quickly gets his hands into opponents. Explosive at the point and knocks defenders from the line, opening up running lanes. Keeps his head on a swivel and is always looking for someone to hit.

Engulfs defenders and takes them from the action. Quick to the second level, squares into linebackers, and out-positions them from the action. Stays square, fights with his hands, and anchors in pass protection. Always looking for someone to hit.

Weaknesses: Off balance and overextends. Lacks footwork in space. A little too large and isn’t properly conditioned.

Overall: Sow had an up-and-down career at Eastern Michigan, yet he played solid football last season and built on the flashes he displayed as a sophomore. He possesses outstanding size, long arms, and better-than-advertised athleticism, which should enable him to find a spot on a roster that employs either a power-gap or zone-blocking system.

So you are quoting from an April 29th pre-draft report not informed by his play in the game. Looks like you brought a bit of pre-disposition to your game analysis.

I just googled it now for the first time to see what was said.

I could have just taken credit. Jeez.

Also I was NOT quoting a source. Just agreeing with an opinion.

Thanks for that. Very interesting to see the relative balance of strengths and weaknesses in it.

Here's Tony Pauline's pre-draft take on Mike Owenu:

Struggles to adjust and pick up the blitz. Too big and must shed at least 40 pounds.

Analysis: ... his sheer girth hampers his ability to cover any amount of area and adjust to nimble opponents ... he must shed significant weight to have any opportunity at the next level.

Interesting. So people here are talking about ONE play that has film evidence and are breaking down that ONE play and instead of answering the three yes or no questions i asked about how someone would break down that ONE play you post a scouting report from april and talk about the eye test from an entire game. I was at work so didnt watch the game but based on the film i can not agree with your position at all. Sow looks just fine making a difficult punch and kick out block. As previously admitted perhaps he wasnt supposed to punch the DT? Which is what makes it look like he was "beat on the first step" but logic and film says he did what he was supposed to and even GIVING the DE the first step he still got a piece of him. Pretty damn quick and athletic

If Bill was seriously considering starting a rookie at RT - and it certainly appears that he is - then why didn't he just draft an actual, like, you know, Right Tackle...?

Again, the one play only became a focal point because someone posted that Sow won every rep and Kasmir asked me for the play where I thought he clearly did not win.

I'm sorry for having a different opinion and responding. If you see things differently, I hope you are right.

You said, "The writers can be idiots." I was posting off your comment. Plus, here's been at least two other writers who have left Sow off the 53 (which I disagree with).

I've been positive about the team and draft since last season ended. I am not here to trash the team or players. . Discussions like these are met by personal attacks and misinformation.

I understand why good posters have left the board. Opinions are not appreciated.

Yep... I haven't noticed Crawhammer lately either; I hope he's just taking a break and not something else...

Like who?

What are you guys going to say if Sidy Sow ends up being be a good RT?

Nothing, I suspect.

Ian, I wish we could actually search past threads to see what folks here were saying about (say) Mike Owenu when he was drafted in 2020.

A little more moderation might result if folks knew they had to answer for their own failed predictions.

I still remember the Captain’s quote about him on day 3 in 2020.

“Where is this fecking fat feck going to play?”

Ooops.

Don't say Dawand Jones.
I watched him last week. This poor guy can't move. I struggle to think what's going on with him because he looked good in college.

Josh Uche would run through him like a ghost.

He drafted Sow to be a RT. If he wins the job in camp what a great pick. How many college RTs that were on the board then are stating this year ?

There are a couple search engines on the site. This is the good one…

I think he was banned for treating Ian like crap

So you judged him to be off balance on nearly every play. How do you evaluate that? What does off balance look like.
Do you have any poor plays to cite or are you saying he played well you just don’t like his posture?

So, what is, like, you know, an actual Right Tackle?

is it like, a player who plays right tackle?

which would make Sidy Sow an actual right tackle when he’s playing there.
