Patriots hosting DE Trey Flowers for a visit (Update: He's Agreed to Terms)

If the second sentence is true the first is also.
Nope. They may have signed Flowers for depth in any case - in other words, your reasoning may be right. Or they might have gone in a different direction, but if Uche's situation is more fluid, it might have edged their hand. Neither of these is unreasonable.
Are you really saying the Patriots figured out that Uche won’t be returning so their plan is to sign a 30-ish player who has played 7,7,4 games the last 3 years and that takes care of next year?
I'm really saying that it's possible they wanted more depth in case the situation with Uche fell apart.

Is this really worth an argument?

Why do you find that coincidental?
The same way it's coincidental that Trent Brown plays when he feels like it.. same way judon wasn't fully participating, same way gilly held out, same way ty law held out, logan mankins.. MONEY!!

Then don’t argue.

It’s not reasonable to say that the chances of Uche returning next year are what influenced signing a veteran depth DE/OLB who has been injured for 3 years.
It isn’t how you would respond to that and it isn’t in any way a solution tovthat perceived problem.

Not sure what “blow up” you are referring to.

Ah, so you just default to players are lazy slobs who don’t give a damn then naturally slack off when they get a paycheck, and that injuries are due to whether you have money, not actually getting injured in a violent game
Gotcha.
It truly amazes me that in a world where people enjoy bringing down other people that fans of a team can habitually attack the character of players on that team just to have something to say to feel better about themselves.

I think it'd be very reasonable for BB to sign a DE/OLB if he thought there was a possibility he'd be moving Uche.

I think it's very reasonable, and past history has shown, that BB might move a guy who is asking for too much (by BB's reckoning) for an extension.

So there you go. We disagree.

Haha you think he’s going to trade Uche. Lol.

What examples can you give of similar players he traded in the final year of their rookie contract when they were going to contribute because he was afraid they wouldn’t sign next year?

Has Ronnie Perkins ever played in an nfl game lol?
THis is Perkins 3rd year after being IRed in camp last year. Stop pretending like the guy has been here 5 or 6 years.. *SMH*

He attended a few.

His rookie year he was on the roster but inactive for every game then last year he was on IR.
Hasn’t played football for real in almost 3 years.

Uche is in for a big season and is going to get paid in 2024 by someone.

I never said I think he's going to trade Uche.

Obviously that last half of your question is speculation, but...

Deion Branch
Chandler Jones
Brandin Cooks

All were in the last year of their rookie deals. All had contributed. All were traded. You're arguing with others that Uche isn't worth that much, now you're really trying to make him some sacred cow in this conversation between us.

The closest analogy i see for the Pats to the Dugger/Onwenu/Uche contracts is Hightower/Collins/Jones. We were all hoping the Pats would re-sign all three. How'd that work out?

If the Pats can't come to an agreement with Uche and some team overvalues those sack numbers and makes a good offer, would it shock you to see the deal made? A bit of reference, Alex Highsmith just got 17m AAV...he's averaged 7 sacks a year, but popped for 14.5 last year. Some teams just adore sack numbers. BB never has.

That's one way to look at it. Another is to look at the contracts offered when a double-digit sack artist hits the market, which isn't terribly frequent. Someone will pay up big if Uche has another season even approaching last year's showing. I'd much prefer to retain his services long term. We need speed on this defense.

When you look at some of the recent signings, It works in the Pats favor that Cam Jordan signed for only $13.75M/yr. It also helps that Judon's contract for $11.25/yr. Danielle Hunter signed for only $17M.. Jordan and Judon are well below Market value.

Uche is definitely watching what happens with Nick Bosa, though.

One of the issues for an UCHE extension will be what do they consider him? A DE or a LB. There is a $5M/yr different between the two positions when it comes to the Franchise Tag.

2 Franchise years at LB = 38.326M (guaranteed salary)
2 Franchise years at DE = 48.941M (guaranteed salary)

Either way, it's a lot of money for a guy who only has had 1 year of double digit sacks. The fact that they ARE talking extension, however is a good thing.
I don't think that Trey Flowers signing has any impact on Uche. I think it's more on Guy and Ekuale.

How many guys go from playing no games year 1 and 2 to being a good player? It’s typically a bad sign.

I agree completely and am guessing it is a Ekuale upgrade. Guy will play.

I am sure he saw what Chubb got after being from Denver.

How many guys are asked to completely change the way the play the game as Perkins was? They asked him to go from being in a 3 point stance all the time in college to a 2 Point stance who would have to drop back at times in coverage. And clearly the thought SOMETHING of him to have him on the 53 the entire time.

He may turn out to be nothing, but let's stop pretending the guy has been here for 5-6 years is all I'm saying.

Agreed but I think the same thing happened with Uche, so someone could argue it is normal for a Pats' rookie switching positions on the defense. Uche was not completely shut out like Perkins - 9 tackles in 2020, and 12 tackles in 2021, so he played but not a lot.

Let's hope they want Flowers, Barmore, and White in a 3 man rotation on 3rd down passing situations.
You're forgetting Wise. Flowers isn't going to take time from Wise.

I wonder if they want Flowers over Center vs over the tackle?

I hope in more cases than not over the Tackle.

If I were Jennings or especially Perkins, I would be very, Very worried. Sam Roberts too maybe.

One of either Big Jerry Pharma or Demarcus Mitchell needs to be released in like 5 minutes from now.

Still need another above-replacement-level DB, at either Outside CB or Free Safety.

And Mac sure could use one of the big 4 remaining UFA RBs.

Speaking of whom... Why haven't any of the remaining UFA Offensive Tackles been invited here for workouts yet?
