Patriots hosting DE Trey Flowers for a visit (Update: He's Agreed to Terms)

Hasn’t done anything in a few years, I believe Patricia used him more as a linebacker than a DE and he had some injuries. Worth a shot

Wise & White?

They aren’t edge players they are 3/4 DE types. Different position.

Like what @Ring 6 said, they aren’t edge players. They are 3-4 Ends.

Seemore & Ty Warren were 3-4 DEs, at 300 pounds...

Wise, White, even Judon and now Trey Flowers are all 270ish, and that makes them 4-3 DEs in my book.

Hey don't get me wrong, I also want to keep Jennings & Perkins ahead of pure garbage like Sig Heilig & the ***ot; but the aforementioned 4 can also line-up standing on the edge, so there are options...

That’s not the way we play it.
Judon, Uche, Perkins, Jennings play the edge.
Wise and I expect White play on the T with an edge player outside of them.
Flowers plays the edge but shifts down inside on passing downs.

They are different positions with different responsibilities. If Judon or Uche go out, Wise isn’t replacing them.

Every move isn’t an indication of something else. Guys who are borderline to make the roster aren’t a signal about the starter.

If you assume on one hand Uche is getting an extension then on the other he is leaving, neither case makes any difference to whether we would sign Flowers.
As I said, it's just a gut feeling and speculation.

I've been thinking that the Pats and Uche coming together on an extension was going to be tough anyway, given the value being placed on pass-rushers by the other teams, as opposed to by BB.

The signing may be an indication that the team would rather have Flowers than Jennings or Perkins.
THAT's the right answer. The Flowers signing sends a message to the Perkins and Jennings that the competition level has risen. But even more Flowers (assuming he can get back to something close to his 2018 level) is also a guy who can rush from the middle. The Pats seem to really like to put a guy like Flowers, Ekule, or White in the middle to create immediate pressure but also has the foot speed to stem in that inside out rush the Pats like so much. Where they line up say with Ekule on a G and Judon on the OT and Ekule rushes through the outside shoulder of the G into the OT while Judon peals behind him into the open space while Barmore takes the double team of the C and G. That can give Judon a lot of open space. And if the C peels back to Judon, it leaves Barmore one on one

I've seen the Pats use this 4 man rush a bunch of times the last 2 years. It's something that creates immediate pressure if not a sack. I think that is why they are trying to draft a guy like White who is a DE, but in that situation have value on the inside. A guy who can get immediate push with a power rush on the inside, while also offering the speed to go inside out.

I see the Pats as an effective 4 man rush team, but we may see more 5 man rushes since we have a BUNCH of guys who can come from the second level and do damage in Duggar, Mapu, Wilson, etc Of course this will depend on how good our man coverage winds up being.

I’m saying this move is totally unrelated to that. Regardless of Uches future situation they would still sign Flowers to compete for a depth role.

I won't disagree with that second sentence, but unsure about the first.

I'm glad Flowers is back. Feels like a good move.

If the second sentence is true the first is also.

Are you really saying the Patriots figured out that Uche won’t be returning so their plan is to sign a 30-ish player who has played 7,7,4 games the last 3 years and that takes care of next year?

The league has changed since then. Players like Seymour and Warren playing end don't exist. If you look at the film, you'll see Wise is inside of Uche or Judon making him an end.

Judon is listed as a LB and calls himself a LB.

They still clearly play a 3-4 defense.

IF I was Josh Uche I would bank on having another great year and cash in unless the Pats blow me away with an extension. They are not a getting discount from Uche with the nature of this game.
