Wynn and Cannon OR Anderson and Reiff

Making a judgment about an offensive or defensive lineman in OTA's is LUDICROUS. We won't have a clue about either Reiff or Brown until they put on the pads in camp and get to the TC practice with other teams. THEN we can make a few "judgements" of where we are at OT.
And even then, players DO get better over the course of a season
Meanwhile Bedard goes all in on the downside: Boston Sports Journal

Are there any real options for Patriots' potential disaster at tackle?

Including this: Calvin Anderson, a backup with the Broncos, has been the de-facto left tackle this offseason and has been routinely run around before pads have gone on.
For the record, I usually LIKE Greg Bedard and I'm a subscriber to his site., BUT this post seems like just lazy filler to me, especially the comments on Anderson.

There have been several reports on Anderson, the Bronco's "back up", played very well when on the field. He is smart, VERY athletic, and well motivated. Commenting on watching DE's "run around him" in a no pad practice is trying to fit any perceived negative into a narrative that he is trying to paint.

I don't blame him necessarily. The Bruins, Celtics, and Sox coverage is good and extensive, but the Pats still are the driving force behind people going to his site. This is a really dead time for new, so a LOT of stuff we hear in the next month will be hot takes and content filler. Even if nothing is happening, they HAVE to keep coming up with content to justify their checks

No question, that OT is a HUGE question mark for this team. I mean it is fair to worry.......a lot. Anderson has never begun a season as the starter. Brown is as good or bad as he WANTS to be. Reiff was a very good OT who is at the end, but MAY have another good season in him. But regardless, it all just speculation until they start to hit and the best part of TC for that comes in joint practices

Many of these contracts have provisions that require the player to make the 53 man roster.
Ah ok. Hopefully that’s the case

He either spends too much time with the fellowship of the miserable on sports radio, or his CFO is telling him they need to push the advertising revenue up by getting more clicks.

There’s nothing to talk about for a month… besides Jack Jones.

This is a great example of overthinking, reading too much into things. It was widely reported that Brown was at OTAs, he just missed the first day because of an airline flight being delayed or cancelled.

There are concerns with Brown. He reportedly showed up out of shape, a problem he’s had previously. Might indicate his commitment to the program isn’t as strong as it should be. But coming off 2022 that could just be Fat Matt’s last gift to the Pats.

Hopefully there is time for Brown to get in shape before camp, and he is motivated to do so. We will see how he shows up and gets to work when the time comes. Until then it’s just empty chatter, baseless speculation, and pure projection, like the contract issues allegation above.
Thank you for updating me. Missing a flight disrespects the team, other players, and fans. He has a job; he gets paid for that job; you don't miss flights and be out of shape for the job that pays you unless you want out.

n6249c, here is something I read after my first reply to you. I did not write this, I copied it for your info.

"Trent Brown missed OTAs, and he also missed the first day of minicamp due to a flight-related issue. He did return to the team for the final day of minicamp, but he only did conditioning work at that practice.

So how is he considered a winner on this list?

The reason is circumstantial for the 30-year-old offensive tackle. The right tackle position has been a hot mess, and there truly is a lack of reliable depth at tackle as a whole. Suddenly, Brown is one of the most important players on the entire roster.

There was no question that he’d be the top tackle on the team, but the circumstances seemed far less daunting than before the start of training camp. Brown’s presence is needed now more than ever."

He didn't miss the flight. The flight was canceled due to a hail storm. He might be out of shape or recovering from an injury. Mini-camp is not too critical- we will see at the end of July. I assume Klemm is in contact.

Reiff by reports looked awful in OTA.
Anderson, completely unproven, in 3 years with broncos started a grand total of 16 games

The starters will be Trent Brown and Reiff

At best its a wash from last year and last year was terrible.

I am not reading too much into o-line play in shorts and T-shirts. Let's see what he can do with the pads on.

And my understanding about Reiff was that he was designated as a back up and it wasn't that he did anything bad. But that could be because Belichick wanted to see what other guys looked like.

Considering Wynn seemed to quit on the team after being switched to RT and Cannon was only active for two games last year before going to IR. I will take Reiff and Anderson by default.

I understand why people may roll their eyes at this, but McDermott was one of the few pleasant surprises on the OL. True, I'd want a more established/dominant player at RT, but I have a feeling he's going to battle it out for a starting position, or at least be the first backup. The line was the most solid at the end of the season when he stepped in.

The success of the OL rests on the shoulders of Trent Brown. If he has a good year, the rest of the line has a good chance to come together.

Reiff will cost us $4.1m if he is cut. He'll make the team even if he is a backup.
He could fail to make the team, get injured or get traded and they’ll eat the dead cap. He’s only on a one year deal.

Getting caught out by a hailstorm is not disrespectful. We will see how he shows up to do his job when the pads go on.

buys 2-3 coach seats
buys 2 1st class seats

If that's actually how it is done, it would explain why he had problems. If his flight is delayed or cancelled, finding another one with that accommodation available might take a while.

What a pleasant surprise that would be, if he turns into even an average NFL OT. Would change everything that we are chewing on in this thread.

Anyone can get injured, but it's highly unlikely the team will cut a mostly guaranteed contract, even if it's only one year, unless the player has completely fallen apart or is vocal about internal problems like Brian Hoyer was.

It’s also unlikely the team will carry Reiff if he looks washed up… like zero possibility at all.

4 million in dead cap is a tough pill to swallow, but they could potentially foist him on some OT needy team and save half that.
