State of the Board Discussion [Moved to Here]

I am a huge "Homer" and am proud of it. I don't get any enjoyment from watching the Patriots if I don't believe they will win. If they start playing poorly, I always expect them to come back and either make it a close game or win. When I know they are very unlikely to win and they start putting in back-ups, I look for positives that can come out of each play and I have hope for the next game based on the positives I see. This is not a recent mindset for me, I do it for all the sports teams I root for and I will never change. However, growing up in the Boston area, I have learned to not let the complainers and criticizers (many of them legit) bother me. The most annoying part of disagreements on the board is how long it can take sometimes, for people to realize that they are never going to change someone's mind, and how a topic that I thought was interesting has devolved into an immature name calling sihtshow. But other than that, I really enjoy this board and I am looking forward to the season and doing damage in the playoffs. GO PATS!!!

It won't be easy to get right, but since you already have "time since last post" rate limiting, you could consider "posts per hour" rate limiting too. Hopefully that could cut back on the "you're a turd / no, you're a turd" post chains we get from time to time.
The limit on "posts per hour" might be especially useful on Friday and Saturday nights, just say'in.

While I get what you’re saying, let’s say I did what you suggested and removed it. Am I supposed to delete every mention of Tom and ban anyone who likes him from now until he retires? Because that forum has spared the mods and I that need to this point.
I think you all are managing the situation the right way. I don't post in there, but I like to read a wide array of stuff on this site. I do like to see some Tommy stats here and there because he's always going to be a NEP legend, and I root for him whenever it's not against us.

The people seething over that forum need to do themselves a favor and stop paying attention to it or clicking on it. The pseudo divide on these forums won't calm until Brady retires, so nothing you do with that section will change the turmoil amongst some members here. If the people that only post there are antagonistic on the main board, the mods have controls to manage it.

I think posters here need to stop trying to be forum moderators and just chat about our team. Let that subforum do its thing and save yourselves energy and peace of mind.

30,000 foot view, bickering can come from a desire to create or respond to bickering, or it can come from just plain differences of opinion.

Meh never mind, was about to go deep into stuff I only half-believe. lets stick to good things I can quantify -

The POF was crazy & a lot of fun & that was before Trump & dementia Joe.

Ian would need metal detector at the POF door these days.
yeah... I've thought often that skipping the last 5 or 6 years probably saved us all from seeing a board-generated Immasay, headline. But this country over the last few years has become what the PoFo was when it was shut down. And since there's no PoFo, yayyyyy, we don't have to figure out here how that could have happened.
Ian, something I hope you can please help keep a lid on this season: There's an element here that goes overboard trying to shame "homers" for allegedly being unrealistic or not critical enough. These self-fashioned football "experts" are more invested in stoking their own egos and pushing agendas (usually anti-BB, anti-Kraft, etc.) vs. acknowledging positives. I had a bellyful of that nonsense last year, especially from the Buccaneers fan contingent that gleefully swoops in whenever the Pats, or especially our quarterback, are struggling. I'll never forget a certain "God of Wrath" insisting we Patriots fans "pump the breaks" on lauding Mac Jones when the kid showed early promise. Seems Mac apparently was undeserving, at least to some, since his initials weren't T.B. That stuff needs to end.
Seriously. It's just trolling. Brady's probably my favorite player too, but in year 1 he didn't beat anybody but Michael Bishop. Just stfu about Mac Jones, who put up 3800 yards and 22 TDs his rookie year -- okay, and 13 int. Point is, there is no need for Mac Jones to somehow be less than he is for Tom Brady to be what he is. There is no need for BB to suck for TFB to be the GOAT QB.

I mean, it's good for his personal ego and his stans for him to get 1 ring with TB. That's nice. If he gets another 5, I wouldn't be unhappy, although I don't think that happens. The issues around one more tour with Brady were about his interests versus OUR interests, putting of course the franchise in the place of some minority of the fan base. I mean, what else can you do? There's no secret "real Patriots" playing in the invisible NFL, it is what it is. The Patriots have a QB, his name is Mac Jones, and to this point in his career, he's pretty good. He doesn't have to be better than Brady, but as it happens, for his first year in the league, he was. Oh by the way, Mac's also better than Brady was in his second season, 2001, although since the defense carried TFB to a Super Bowl in 01-02, and since he's the GOAT in general, we don't think of it that way.

Don't get me wrong, I can pretty much guarantee that the Brady Stans in Bradystan, TompaBaydystan, will be happy in the end. Mac's unlikely to be remembered as the better QB. Anybody shooting for that record will find that time and a 32-team league are brutal enemies.

Remember how Tom was supposed to be "passing the baton" to that guy in KC? What's his name? Mahomes? 5 years under his belt, only 1 SB? Need to pick up the pace, unless the baton we're passing is really the Peyton Manning irrelevant stat whore baton. And that goes to my previous point about stats - the ring matters so much more. You need both to be among the greats, but piling stats upon stats upon stats will not make Aaron Rodgers or Peyton Manning the "real GOAT." Feel good, Bradystan. Your cultic leader is secure.

But I'm just a Pats fan who was so happy to see Brady be the GOAT for my team for 20 year, that it's just pathetic to see a few ashhats or pewter hats or whatever that color is, trying to make it Brady VS New England, or VS some poor shmuck 2nd year QB, or VS his ex head coach (or for the really slick ones, sometimes, his offensive coordinator? I don't really understand that personality wrinkle, just weird to me.)

That said, for right now, head to head, Mac vs. Brady? Brady's losing. (I doubt it ends up that way, but I find that factoid hilarious.)

I think the TB Forum / Tompa threads are a good way to address the situation.

The site has created various relationships between users, and it's natural that some of them are strongly Team Tom. Let them have their place to maintain their relationships and talk about their favorite player and his new team, and keep it away from the rest of us who don't care much if at all about those topics.

I think it's being too much of a purist to insist that the TB/Tompa content should be banned. And as Ian points out, it's just not practical to excise any mention of the GOAT QB from a fan base that followed him for twenty years, so the next best thing to do is provide a place for that talk to happen and to steer people there as needed.

LOL, yes.

It would be interesting to do some data mining of posts per hour by user, mapped various ways.

I'd bet if you find a peak of posts per hour not during a game it's probably some mindless bickering between users who don't know when to quit.

Same would be true during a game, but that's to be expected, right?

I would expect that to be true. The biggest challenge is obviously going in and making modifications that don't interfere with the software's code, functionality, etc. especially when it comes to adding restrictions, as well as not increasing the number of queries during peak times (game days, especially prime time games where we have tended to have issues) and that's the thing I'm looking at now in terms of trying to potentially make something work without impacting performance.

A couple suggestions...

- instead of limiting the number of posts per day...I would like to see some posters be required to post per hour. For instance I think it would be helpful for the forum in general if @MAC10 posted in the Tampa Buccaneer forum every hour.
- non-Patriot fans (such as GreenCow and that JeteFan) should be limited to 1 post per year

@Ian I have a suggestion for making this board a safer space for all of us.

Each of us can send you a list of the various words and topics that trigger us. Then you can develop a program that will eliminate those topics from the periphery of our own individualized home Patsfans page.

My list of trigger words: Parcells, Goodell, hemorrhoids, 3 ply toilet paper, Brunell, Ladainian, and potato farmer.

I have to say that this was LOL funny, both in concept and in your choice of trigger words.

But let me try to get into the spirit of it for a minute:
Unfortunately there is a significant problem with your well-thought-out proposal. It might be feasible for someone like you with only 7 trigger words. But for some other posters with a somewhat larger number of trigger words (larger by, say, a factor of 100,000 or so) it might be a bit more difficult to implement.

This little clip perfectly encapsulates the varied landscape of opinions in this thread...I see myself as Max Bialystock...LMAO

This is Ian we are talking about. I hear he is 9 feet tall and can fart entire symphonies. He will overcome minor technological issues for the sake of our fragilities.

I'm not 9 feet tall, but the rest I could probably pull off depending on what we have for dinner on a given night. Although mine tend to be silent, yet memorable.

1) Torch the Tompa Forum conspirators' safe haven where disloyalty breeds
2) Replace all treasonous conspirators' avatars with a 'scarlet letter' signifying their Patriots betrayal
3) Require a 5,000 essay on "Why New Englanders must never exhibit Man Love for out-of-town athletes"
4) Install a daily "In Bill We Trust" oath and also a 10 question "loyalty reaffirmation" test (score of 90% or better for posting privileges)

Sample question: What was the result of TB12's last pass for New England

5) Incorporate a mandatory purchase requirement from the PatsFans.com Swag & Book Store that includes:

A] "Cam: A Chronology of My Favorite QB Sneaks" (2020 Random House Publishing)
B] "McCorkle or Bust-A Ginger Journey" (2021 Simon & Schuster)
C] "Belichick: A Friends & Family Celebration" featuring tributes from Bill's favorite consultants (2022 Nantucket Publishing)
D] "Me and the Twins-Bill Belichick's Guide to Love" (Hallmark 2016)

Regarding the feared continuation of "Brady mentions".........Go Full Zuckerberg on these loathsome cretins

Eh, I already torch the Bucs fans enough as it is…

Is that really a thing for people around here?
No, it’s something I’ve been pondering in only extreme cases, but nothing that’s a thing at this time.

Given the number of data posts I make on busy transaction/news days, that would be interesting...

Careful, that's one post today. You're on a pitch count.

Reminds me of an old joke:

The doctor gave me bad news. He told me I only have 10 orgasms left in me. My wife said, "We ought to make a list of how to best use them". I told her, " I already did, and you're not on it!
