Mac Jones bottom 5 QB in the NFL? Wut

So what we have hear is a failure to communicate.

We have one of the Brady boys finding an article that he thinks reflects poorly on Mac, and he quickly posts it. Even though it really wasn't being negative about Mac at all. So no it wasn't worth posting, is a mischaracterization of the actual interview and somehow, none of us are surprised sb1 posted it.

The O.P. seems to have been mocking the bottom 5 designation, so your take seems wildly out of line.

We don't know how much improving Jones has done with his arm strength, and it's obviously too soon to really see how he's improved but, looking at the end of last year, predicting slight ups or downs of current QBs, and then slotting the current starters according to the almost non-existent additional information we have for this new season, so far, I'd say that Jones starts fitting in to the league hierarchy somewhere after the following QBs (listed in no particular order):

Brady
Mahomes
Rodgers
Wilson
Allen
Burrow
Watson
Jackson
Herbert
Carr
Prescott
Stafford
Murray



Some arguments could certainly be made for others, based off of last year's numbers (i.e. JAG), or based off of multiple recent years if last year was a down year (i.e. Ryan), but starting to think about where he slots after about 13 seems like a fair way to start. Some I've got in the list above may fade (or may not play, again, right Watson?). Some of the younger ones that I didn't list may have big jumps (Lawrence could, for example). But tossing Jones into a group of vets/young'uns after the above, and above the likes of the stiffs currently battling it out for the Seahawks, Steelers, and Panthers starting jobs, or the likes of a Jared Goff or Marcus Mariota or Daniel Jones or Ryan Tannehill when he's without Derek Henry, seems like a fair slotting.



Note: Kirk Cousins is a pain in the ass to rank. Statistically, he's a top 10 kind of QB, but it doesn't translate to winning many big games, and at least some of that is on him.

Agreed. If you lined up NE’s top 6 receiving options and Buffalo’s top 6 receiving options, then went down the line to compare them in order, most people would take 5 of Buffalo’s players.

It’s hilarious how, in order to make the opposite argument, one has to remove Buffalo’s #1 and then say “NE’s #1 is better than Buffalo’s #2..!! NE’s #2 is better than Buffalo’s #4..!! See, they are perfectly comparable..!!”

The weird thing is, Barfalo's #2 is still > NE's #1, so that argument doesn't hold water either.

When I factor in what he had to work with last year and how he performed statistically, I already consider him top 10 in the League.

The media is slobbering over Josh Allen, but I think Jones will prove to be the better QB. He just doesn't have a legit #1 to throw to.

Kirk Cousins has been the least impactful QB I've seen. You look at his stats and then his record and you're completely confused.

While he catches more TD, which matter imo. Davis has never had 600 yards in a season while Bourne is coming off 650 & 800 seasons as a number 2 or 3. Same argument for Meyers. He out produces Davis in yards but Davis has like 13-14 TD over the last two years.

It's close but definitely not clear cut and probably favors our WR's if you're being objective. I'm a Davis fan though.

I got Mac in the top 10 in the League. Based on the lists of "better" QB's others have put forth, it seems they are comfortable putting him in the top 15. I cannot believe all the consternation and angst those 5 measly ranking spots have caused....

I just call it as I see it. He did a damn good job making chicken salad out of the chicken sh*t receivers/ends he had to throw to. I expect him to take a modest-but-noticeable leap forward this year, and if he ever has good receivers/ends to throw to, his numbers will be very much be in line with Allen, Carr, Burrow.

If Mac can start booming in deep balls like Derek Carr, opposing teams have a challenge. If strange is the real nasty guard that we are talking about then the two headed monster of Rham and Harris is going to be really difficult to defend and out bend but don't break defense can really work .

Difficult in the playoffs, but who knows uche or mcgrone can step up a notch and voila suddenly your defense looks dangerous as DBs don't need to defend for more than 2 seconds.

I'm assuming you're referring to guys they could've drafted prior to that year. I'll take it a step further... The guy Bill d*cked around signing (Emmanuel Sanders) in 2014, came back to haunt them in that 2015 AFCCG in Denver making back breaking chain moving grabs on 3rd down.

I love you but don't want to pull your cord and get you going. You're missing the one big one in 2013 though. Travis Kelce (who I had a 2nd on). I can't remember exact grades rn but I know I had a high 2nd on Allen too, WR3.

Yep, and Kelce didn't last very long afterwards either... But in Bill's defense the Late Prisoner hadn't yet been arrested, so the need was greater at WR than it was at TE at that particular moment...

Correct. We were just hoping the pin would stay in that grenade. That was actually quite the class. Eifert, Reed, Ertz, Kelce, McDonald, Escobar. Decent get in one class.

If you're a clear starter, you can't really be a bottom 5 QB, and Mac is clearly a legit starting QB. I can never tell if people mean "bottom 5" like bottom 5 among actual starter/franchise QBs or actual bottom 5. It's like the Alex Smith ranking, where people would say he's one of the worst QBs, which was true come playoff time, or when you're looking at all the contenders, but he was probably right around average if you consider there are 32 teams, but usually 8-10 are trotting out journeymen or career backups.

I think Mac is in the 15-20 range but it's so hard to tell after just one year.
