OT: Official 2021 Tompa Bay Gronkaneers Thread

It's no wonder most of us get annoyed with Mahomes ballwashers.

Below is from Rosenthal at nfl.com.
Brady won 3 SB in first 4 years as a starter. Mahomes won 1 and lost 1. In what universe does Mahomes record beat Brady's. Reporters nowadays like to come up conclusions without supporting it.

"Perhaps Patrick Mahomes will get in the conversation someday because his first four seasons as a starter top any quarterback since Dan Marino, including Brady. But this is not a Super Bowl run-up about goats and baby goats, just two quarterbacks remaining at very different stages of their respective careers."

Shaq Barrett reads the main forum of PatsFans, I guess.

Glazers are not bringing back anyone expensive.

Mahomes has competition now. Let's see how he does. Brady had to get through Manning, those stingy Steelers, Ravens, Chargers

Bucs without Brady AND also Gronk, Fournette, and likely Godwin are gonna be a mess on offense.

Reading thus article, it's obvious that Gabbert will be their next starting QB unless he's beaten out by Trask.

Gabbert will be an interesting case study. Will 5 Years under the same system and 2 years learning behind Brady finally make him an adequate starter? Plus he has the pedigree being 6'5 and the 10th pick. I'm rooting for him.

I can field this one. No.

If Gabbert starts Bucs aren't winning 6 games. If the Saints retain the DC as HC and get a half decent QB they should be able to win that division with like a 50% record. Rodgers and Wilson aren't going anywhere so I don't know who they could get? Jimmy? Goff? Fitzmagic?

Rodgers is definitely gone. But he ain’t going to Tampa.

I seriously doubt it but you are right he won't go to Tampa if he does leave. Way too much pressure following Tom.

Would be pretty funny if he did follow him there only to still lose.

Have to disagree overall, but I respect your viewpoint on the topic.

I believe Mahomes is better than Rodgers and Brees. I mean, I think he plays at a higher level than those two played at during their peak. And in terms of accomplishments, his ability to win games is well above either of them. Sure, he has only four years as a starter, so he won't stack up to their career longevity and numbers, but what he's done over this stretch is more impressive than any four year stretch from those guys. True, he hasn't played yet with the team handicapped by his salary, and he's always had great weapons, but I think what he's done is pretty far beyond those two.

All that said, I think there's legitimate concerns about Mahomes psyche. Beginning last Super Bowl, he clearly has some major problems in his head about structure and freelancing. I'm not even convinced it's because he's ****y; it actually may have to do with the opposite type of pressure, which is self-confidence and hesitation. But whatever it is, it's really ugly when it happens. That AFCCG was absolutely atrocious. I'm still in disbelief over the final six dropbacks, which I can understand why Chiefs fans would be in such disbelief and confusion they'd stab at desperate conclusions. It does indeed seem inexplicable that a guy could basically Knoblauch there...a guy of Mahomes stature.

Maybe we don't see it again...who knows? But I think his play all season was boiling to some type of point like that. He was fantastic when he let the running game and underneath routes do their job against favorable defensive schemes, and then capitalizing after being patient. But then he abandoned the approach at the worst time and went back to his read/reach/freelance style, which has been terribly inefficient for a long time. If this is an innate trait, as @Deus Irae suggested about Mahomes draft concerns, then he's just going to follow in the footsteps of all these great QBs before him who won their first Super Bowl and were considered all-time greats, and then never came through again when it mattered.
I'm going to laugh my ass off if he goes the Favre/Brees/Rodgers/Wilson route.

Especially with the media acting like he's a lock to win 4+ Super Bowls.

I think for many marginal QBs, they just need time to be in the right system and need time to learn it. Would JG have been a starter this long if he didn't sit 3 years in the Pat's system and learn behind Brady? I think if he had to play right away or in his 2nd year, he would have been regulated ti back up long time ago.

Gabbert has been put in a very similar situation as JG. If he hasn't learned anything after sitting behind Brady for 2 years, I'll be shocked.

People also forget to consider that QBs lose a step in their 30s. How will Mahomes look when he can't escape a blitz and is forced to be a pocket passer?
Wilson has already slowed down. He's still good, but it's harder to make magic happen.

To summarize I think JG is a middle of the road QB. He is a top 20 to 10.

I think Gabbert has learned from the GOAT and will be a starter in the same range.

Btw,.. I think Mac wil develop into the same range. In my eyes JG, Mac, and Gabbert are interchangeable.

Good luck to him. All of them. One thing they have going for them is the division will be awful. If they can get a semi-decent QB, have no idea how Trask is progressing, then they can definitely probably win the South with 9 wins.

I do wonder what Licht is thinking. I think he already came out and said Godwin is their top priority which he should be given his age and position. He will be a huge asset to any QB. But I do wonder if he kind of resets and looks to work the draft. He has been excellent the last 6 years.

Favre is the best comparison. Brees wasn’t capable of going off script, and Wilson isn’t capable of using a script. Favre lost his goddamned mind in the postseason.

He played in two overtime games in the postseason. First one (4th and 26 game against Eagles), he got the ball after a punt and on his first pass threw up a ridiculous interception. Second one (2007 vs Giants), he got the ball first and threw a horrible interception...people still comment on that play, as two guys were wide open.

The 2009 NFCCG against the Vikings was even worse. In field goal territory, tie game, cross body throw over the middle of the field that got picked.

Not joking when I say I struggle in my personal rankings to put Favre in the top 25.

The Bills really blew a golden opportunity this year. I think they would have beaten the Bengals. I also think, from just an entertainment perspective, a Rams-Bills Super Bowl would be nearly perfect. Probably a pick em.

I'd like to see the Bucs contend because I winter in Tampa and they're on TV. Pre-Covid I'd go to bars to catch Pats games and had the opportunity maybe to catch a Bucs game at home on TV. Bucs sucked so I didn't watch. I plan to resume this Pats bar hoping next winter and would like an occasional Bucs game worth watching post Brady. But I doubt they'll contend anytime soon without Tom and the retinue he attracted.

I agree. Mahomes definitely reminds me of Favre’s play style. I couldn’t get my formula to quantify just how bad Favre’s postseason meltdowns were

With the other guys I just meant the “win a ring early, media thinks you’ll win multiple, then don’t win again.” I think people also forget Mahomes wasn’t good in the win against the 49ers either. Brady has 9 Super Bowl games better than that one.
