Defense - old, slow, bad

The pats run defense has been a liability for 5 straight seasons. They got a lead on the chargers, Andy Reid isn’t interested in running & Todd Gurley was injured in the superbowl in 2018. They had Wilfork from 2003-2014 & then Branch gave them his best Wilfork impression in 2016.

There are plenty of teams that stop the run without an elite NT. DT in general has been a position that has been devalued recently. The pats scheme doesn’t work without one. Two straight years getting gashed by the dolphins says it all. That’s a failure of scheme.

The pats drafted an elite penetrator. Barmore had the most pressures for any rookie since DeForest Buckner. They have an opportunity to move away from two gapping DTs 250 lb LBers behind them.

1. Change the philosophy on D
2. Play some of the athletes you’ve drafted already (Uche, Perkins, McGrone)
3. Draft more athletes in the front seven
4. Get Barmore & Judon healthy
5. Tag JC & get a capable CB2 with Mills moving to FS

I think there is a path for the defense to surprise people moving forward similar to 2015 when they lost Revis, Browner & Arrington and replaced them with Butler, Ryan & Coleman. Moving to youth in the front seven is an important step to be better equipped to defending mobile QBs in spread offenses IMO.

Anyone ever watch other team’s defenses when the QB checks down to the flat? Many are swarming in less than a second. Our defense is out of the screen for a solid 2 secs and the RB gets 7+ yard gains. Like it happens all the time. Other teams could beat us solely by throwing in the flat.

You are correct. Pats D has been slow for years.

Pats are losing at the LOS a LOT these days, THAT, is probably the biggest issue I've been seeing as of late.
FASTER LBS would OBVIOUSLY help, but they're getting beat in the trenches far too often IMO.

I think Bill is set on this 2003 idea of a linebacking core. Big physical guys who are north and south guys and can't really go sideline to sideline. With that being said I don't know why he drafted two smaller more athletic guys in Winovich, and Uche to hardly play them. I was hoping they would usher in a LB core that was focusing more on speed and less on size but then he re-signed Van Noy and Collins and Wino and Uche got buried. Winovich to me is the most the most curious of the two as his snaps drastically decreased since the beginning of 2020 when he started out really well as a pass rusher. I know there was the moment on the sideline last year where he and Bill seemed to have a heated discussion and it seems like that was the catalyst for the lessened playing time. At this point I would be surprised if Winovich is on the team by the end of next season but he seems like a guy who can go to another system and be a 10 sack guy with his pass rushing skillset. Sometimes I wish Bill would utilize these guys natural skills and not try to make them an all around LB at the detriment of what makes them special.

Bill has a mindset of what the LBs should be. Reactive and smart. Not pre-determined rushers. He wants Bruschi, and Mayo, and Hightower.

Question is, then why recruit Winovich?

I hope that Jonathan especially is looking very, very closely inside all the rooms of his building, because there is a huge, Huge, HUGE dis-connect between college scouting and drafting, and between drafting and development/coaching...

OL
Onewnu is a great value in his roles as the 6th OL, a backup OG, and backup RT. I would re-sign Karras.

This is a euphemism for best player Onwenu on the OLine is being benched for no reason other than a dumba-s OLine coach and OC.

The OT issue is self created. The issue would be solved extending Trent Brown and playing him at LT and starting Onwenu permanently at RT. Zero need to go OT in the draft. Go defense with the first 3 draft picks: CB, ILB, NT.

Defense makes or breaks this team. This team only wins if the defense plays perfect and carries this team and crappy OC offense.

Don't try to rationalize any crappy draft the last 7 years before Eliot Wolf showed up. Why did they idiotically draft NKeal Harry? Don't assume there were any good reasons. The staff around BB is mostly mediocre.

Decision to draft harry alone. If this were the military, there'd be courts martial, demotions, forced retirements. In government, there'd be a congressional investigation.

Here, bb gets his $25m per, no accountability at all.

Wonder what kraft thinks watching his franchise value decrease. From brady juggernaut to national joke within 2 years.

I would go so far as to declare them a “national joke” yet. Although, their last two games against the Bills have been the worst defense with the worst defensive game plan that I can remember in my 50 years of Patriot fandom including all the Rod Rust stinkers from back in the day.

The problem we have is that Belichick’s boss is another stubborn, arrogant old man who doesn’t know he’s lost his fastball either. Remember this about Bob Kraft. He was stopped by the police leaving the seen of a crime and asked to show his identification only to return to the same scene the next day and commit the same crime.

interesting talk from Lazar today re: Mcgrone

so did the reshape of the defense already start? you've got the hybrid in Dugger in place......they already started looking speed at LB before this year, they just did it with a guy that needed a redshirt year......again, multi-year build, the overhaul has already started

Hoping he can help us next year....seems like he has a lot of potential:
