2021 Bold Predictions

The annual bold predictions thread. It can be anything you want, team records, standings, SB winners, stat predictions...etc. And remember this is a fun thread, no one here is nostradamus, so take it with a grain of salt and have fun!

I will lead off with several not so bold and some bold.

The Pats will be ranked top 3 in the league in the following:
Total Defense

I used a week by week simulator and these are my results. I had the Pats as an 11-12 win team. Ended up giving them an extra one in the simulator. (In case your interested in doing one yourself https://next.playoffpredictors.com/...-FC5F5D1C1D64/official?L=Aw18ZXTt-DFOS1b0cyoA)

Not how I would pick it if I just picked Division winners and playoff participants without selecting the week by week game winners. But this is the outcome I have using it. I am, for some reason, perfectly fine with the outcome if it plays out this way. It's only fitting that BB should be the first HC to win a SB with a rookie QB.
Chiefs are missing a game.

Thanks for assist. Fixed. Habit to look at the win and total the losses to 16. These 17 game records are going to look strange for a while.

4 bold predictions and a layup:

1.) At least 8 teams will have a different qb starting game 17, than the qb that starts on opening day!

2.) at least one owner will create a national controversy during the season!

3.) draft kings will have a record revenue year from sports betting!

4.) broadcast tv announcers will continue to prove they are mediots and provide even worse in game analyses than ever.

5.) the Jets will continue to suck and not make the playoffs this year!

@mgcolby will have a lot of disappointments this season.

First off, great thread.

Here's my first bold prediction which I don't think this board will be ready for.

BB devises a game plan week 4 that becomes the "blueprint" which derails Tom Brady and the Bucs season ala 1999 when the Pats suffered an embarrassing loss at Foxboro Stadium on MNF to the Ray Lucas led Jets. Although they had no running game, the passing game was pretty good, they were 6-2 and heavy favorites at home. BB got Drew to do his signature ball pat and INT to a LB. Frustrated him with delayed blitzes up the middle and the coming out party for some random CB named Marcus Coleman. Drew never recovered from that game and was so damaged Bill couldn't even repair him. He was okay in Buffalo, but really was a shell of himself.

Nope, the SB maybe, the rest will be spot on or close. Too many people on this board overvalue the other 31 teams and undervalue ours. Amazingly it's been that way for the entire run and before that.

My theory as to why is many folks sit down and watch the Pats game...maybe catch a few minutes of another game here or there, Monday or Thursday night. Then watch highlights and assume the other playoff caliber teams play steady lights out football while NE has ups and downs throughout the game. And many just simply don't pay enough attention.

This is a good football team. And this Defense will be suffocating.

We have the OL, we have the running game, we have stud TEs, we improved at WR, we have a beastly front 7, we have a top notch secondary, we have depth, we have the best coaches and now, we have the heir apparent QB: I'm bold enough to believe.

There's no chance in the Nine Hells that the AFC North has FOUR 11 win teams.
Went through game by game and that is what spit out. Wasn't keeping track as I went. Waited until the end to see the records.

Bad bold:

The injury cluster hits the Patriots' defensive backfield early and often with three starters shelved for significant parts of the season.

Slight silver lining out of the bad bold:

JoeJuan Williams has a huge breakout year subbing for Gilmore.

Good bold:

The entire OL finally stays healthy all sixteen games and is key to leading the team to its best rushing totals since 2008 (2278 yards).

Unbelievable bold:

Uche wins DPOY with teams having to gameplan for Judon most of the year with 18 sacks, 3 FFLs and 2 INTs (one a pick-6).

Maybe. Hopefully.

However, this team hasn't played one single snap together as a team against real NFL caliber players during a real NFL game.

There are a lot of new players, rookies, and vets that opted out last year. It's not just all going to magically come together because we wish it. Mistakes will be made. Communication issues will happen. How long it all takes to come together, anyone's guess.

I'll wait for the season to begin, watch intently and root for the team. I have no expectations or prognostications so carry on.

Not sure how bold any of mine will be, but they're just predictions:
  • 9 or 10 wins, maybe a playoff berth, could win 1-2 playoff games if we make it in but no ring
  • The passing game will still be frustrating, but it'll be more like 2019 where the problem is clearly the receivers and not the QB
  • JJ Taylor will be our #2 RB and keep Stevenson from playing much as a rookie (but it's okay because Taylor will be really good)
  • Meyers will be more productive in the passing game than either of our expensive new tight ends or Agholor
  • Pass rush and run defense will be significantly better than last year thanks to Judon, Uche, Hightower, KVN. Possibly Godchaux and Barmore as well, although I need to see more from them
  • JC Jackson will get a lot of picks and allow a lot of TD; the secondary in general might disappoint, especially while Gilmore is out
  • I'll try not to jump on this bandwagon, but people are going to start calling Dugger a bust because he'll still be mediocre in coverage
  • Nordin will be demoted to PS by October, Folk won't be as good as he was last year, and we just get an entirely new kicker midseason and start this whole process over again in March for the 3rd consecutive year
If these things happen, it won't be a sexy year for the Pats, but valuable groundwork will be in place and I'll be satisfied.
Much closer to what I expect.
Maybe. Hopefully.

Much closer to how I should approach these threads. But I can't help myself...

* Mac Jones production: 3400 yards if a 17 game starter. I think I said 18 TD, 13 Int.... that's probably the low side of what I think is possible/likely. Funny how low that 18 passing TDs prediction looks when Cam's out of the building.

* Pats backfield leads the league in rushing yards and TDs, and flirt with 2 1,000 yard rushers (thanks for that extra game to make those bones, NFL.) I'm going with Harris and Stevenson

*Rhamondre Stevenson breaks out and becomes a 3-down back for certain games, and is a major nightmare for opposing defenses. It's still going to be a role-playing, committee structure, but unless he gets banged up, I see him as hogging more roles than we might expect. (I should acknowledge here that I am high on him based on his play against 2s and 3s, but can't shake the feeling that he'll be something special.)

* People here will declare Nelson Ahlgolong a bust who can't get open deep, because unless we're in a shootout, our default mode will be keeping out of shootouts, controlling the pace of the game, and beating the shlitz out of teams at the LOS. Why, oh why do we keep trying to "misuse" him in intermediate routes? Darn you Josh MacDaniels, Darn you to HECKKKKKKKK.

* BB will be just fine with high firepower acquisitions amassing middling stats. The acquisitions were not made to create Mac Jones' flying circus. They are there to make sure Mac Jones has a shot to win games with his arm when necessary, and to not throw him into this season with a bare cupboard.

* Patriots defensive backfield - and entire D - increasingly gets credit as an "elite" unit. Then they either get "exposed" at some point, or become one for the ages, based on a tiny number of plays -- as is always the case. A suffocating D is suffocating until it's not... and the really great ones are only great once the season's over. I think we'll look back happily at this unit, and maybe... maybe... we'll look back at it in awe.

* Tom Brady sends a private secret encrypted message to Bill Belichick pledging his undying love for the team and organization, and begging to be permitted to play here as Mac Jones' backup for league minimum.

Okay that last one is just to make the other ones look less ridiculous if only by comparison.

I predict Jon Gruden gets fired by week 13

Wow. Dolphins go from 10-6 to 2-15, do Tua and Jacoby get into a car accident together? So Detroit goes 1-16 and are ready to draft the next Mathew Stafford and fans are wishing for Matt Patricia's return? Bold predictions- Jax at 2-15 trades down to the 5-12 Jets so they can draft another QB., and the Pats have a winning record.

I believe the Dolphins have one of the worst rosters in the league. And that O-line is awful. Think the Jets are somewhat competitive with Wilson. Lions rebuilding since 1956. And the Pats are a good football team.

Ok my bold predictions….
Nobody finishes with a .500 record
The Pats make the playoffs
Zach Wilson’s mom creates some sort of controversy
Ray Lewis kills a guy

BOLD Predictions:
Mac Jones wins OROY
Pats make the playoffs
Tompa Bay misses the playoffs
Jeff Fisher returns and leads a team to a 8-8-1 record
