Rumor: Some Patriots Players Have Doubts About Cam Newton

I don't know what you're getting all bent out of shape over. Calling the defense elite before they even started camp is foolish. Plain and simple. You can argue over the "on paper" aspect but there are far too many unknowns and new additions to the defense to just assume this will be a top 3 defense in 2021.
Exactly that. I am waiting to see where Hightower is at after being one year away from football at 31 and in my mind McCourty is on his last legs and wasn’t very good last year. We called 2019 elite but against good teams we couldn’t do much that year so we will see

Its fan speak. Every fan thinks their team is a dynasty in training camp. Even in the win superbowls every year patriots, I never looked at the season of , well there is 14 wins. I especially dont do that now. Bill and Brady could pull some pretty iffy teams to 10-12 wins, there is not a QB right now on the field that can do that. Its going to be some odd seasons, there is going to be some rough spots. I still cannot understand how people did not know this when Brady left.

And here we simply disagree. I'm no big Cam fan, but they were 7-8 with him last year (likely 8-7 if we're actually allowed to practice in the two weeks leading up to Denver). It's not outrageous to think the improvements to the run D and tight ends (from which we got ZERO production in 2020) could be worth two games. The 17th game is a home game against the Cowboys, which is winnable. 11-6 with three wildcard spots gets you in 9 times out of 10. And my argument wasn't even about having Cam there all year, just that our schedule is very manageable, by Cam or otherwise, through the first half of the season. There's no need for Mac to be the savior week 1.
At some points you are going to need more than 130 passing yards to win. At some point you need a Qb to take the game over and pull out wins that you would not have got otherwise. I have not seen Cam being that guy, so why would I think he is now? Its hard to win in this league, just because we won for so long, does not mean it just keeps going because they have a flying elvi on their helmet. There are a ton of new players this year, this not madden, that does not always work. The thing that makes good teams stay good teams is consistency and core players that can carry the load.

Yeah we could have won a couple games, but we also could have lost a couple. that Arizona game came down to zona played bad clock management and if their QB could have made another yard the game was over. We caught the ravens in a time they had some injuries and were playing bad. Every year there are games you can win or lose, but the good teams win those kinds of games.

Bro so if it was a top defense last year without the best, most important player, without the additions, without the year two jump from two draft picks...

fair to say it should be Elite.

anything else should be seen as a disappointment.

Don’t be cute with it the stats show they were still good last year. Anybody saying they aren’t better has an agenda.

What if were in top 3-5 in pts allowed though? We get it, it’spassingleague, but this is clearly a ball control team. Are you guys upset with the style of qb, or the specific qb that we have, cause seems like they’ve kinda set cam up to rely on his feet and arm, for reasons that have been explained this offseason a lot.

what exactly upsets y’all?

Na man. Stats from last year prove it. We were good.

Captain Obvious weighs in with this insightful report.. "League Source" wtf is a league source?? Florio is just another pundit who lives off of clicks of his articles..

“Per a league source, multiple current teammates believe Newton simply isn’t the guy he once was,”

It has been reported many times, over two decades, that Belichick and other members of the coaching staff thought that Brady had outperformed Bledsoe during training camp. Has Belichick ever publicly stated this? No.

Watch from 21:00

BB himself said it.

Mac Jones has looked like the better quarterback throughout training camp....that being said, bill is most likely going to start Cam.

Although I think the chances are high that we see Mac Jones take over this year. Cam newton is oft injured and apparently hasn't gotten the vaccine. So, chances are at some point he will be a "close contact" to someone, will get injured or will stink up the joint leaving an opening for Mac Jones to take over.

BB is going to start Cam game 1 and stick with him as QB until its untenable to do so.

IF a change is made, then BB will stick with whoever is in be it Stiffman or Mack. Musical chair QBs has never been Belichicks modus operandi. Not in Cleveland with Testaverde and not when Bledsoe finally healed up.

Like Bill says "stats are for losers". Yes statically they were a good defense last year but actually watching them play they were average as average could be. Once again, yes they should be better than they were last year but once again, calling the defense "elite" before camp starts is ridiculous.

I don't think the stats show that they were good at all. 15th in the league on 3rd down, bottom 3rd in the league in DVOA, bottom 3rd in the league in yards per play, one of the worst run defenses in the league and their pass defense wasn't anything to brag about either. Even the Jets with the worst offense in the league had their way with them.

There's a lot of reason to have doubts about Newton. That doesn't mean he won't be the best choice to start the season.

I still trust BB and Josh to make the right call. Sometimes it's best to throw a talented rookie in early on (Peyton). Sometimes, if you have the pieces in place an experienced guy can make it work. I just think they'll know what to do.

I don't think they were wrong in letting Brady go. To have the success he had, he had to go to a perfect situation and have the usual luck now and then. I doubt they were shocked he won another SB, but they probably didn't expect all the pieces to fall in place the way they did. Also, as far as I can see, he wanted to move on...see if the grass on the other side of the fence was really greener and maybe show that he could succeed without Belichick and McDaniels. But no one knows what's going on inside his head but TB12.

Bill could take a crap at midfield at half time on opening day and half the board would say he made the right decision.
the other half would claim to have proof positive that we woulda coulda shoulda won if he just took the crap on the 40.
