There are fans who think the team a) can keep everyone and b) should keep everyone.Except for a thing called the salary cap. Bill had to choose between Jones and Hightower. He chose the guy who doesn’t disappear down the stretch and wasn’t a liability against the run. He chose correctly.

Jones was a more than fine as a player here. One can argue he should have been kept.
One can also easily argue Bill took the cap space Chandler would have consumed and he allocated it to Gilly and the picks to Thuney.
Additionally Bill filled his spot with Flowers.
Bill could not have played it any better.
And $15m/year in cap space. Which was used to get Gilmore.it was for a 2nd pick that ended up being used for Thuney & Mitchell. Cooper was just a throw in.

My only point was that Jones could've been extended way before his departure became necessary. There was ample discussion/speculation around that prospect here and elsewhere; I don't recall details of where things were with Jones' camp at the time. One thing we'll never really know is how much his off-field behavior entered into it.
You cannot extend someone just because you want to, and even more importantly, there would be no reason for Jones to do that. He knew he was going to get someone to pony up the cash so he was playing out his contract. There was no incentive for him to take an early extension from the Pats.
Theoretically everyone can be extended early. What we don't know is did Bill want to extend Chandler and it was Chandler who shut it down or vice-versa?I wouldn't argue with any of this considering the horse was so far out of the barn when BB acted.
