We were all hoping that BB would find a way to keep the big 3: HT, Jones, and Collins

Definitely true, though I'll say of the three, he absolutely kept the right one. Hightower and Edelman were the most important players in the second trio of Super Bowls not named Tom Brady. (Gronk is also right up there, but since they won without him in 2016 I give Jules and Donta the nod).

To the point that's been made regarding Jones' proclivity to disappear/fade over a season and in "big" games - these two are the polar opposites - when not just "a" play, but "the" play had to be made to change a game - those two made them - several times in fact.

I don't know why people are moving to their corners on this one. Chandler Jones is a very good player, was a very good player, and has been a great Cardinal. I don't think he's a HoF player, but anyone who denies that he's a well-above-average player is nuts (is anyone doing that here?).

I think he blew his chances of getting that huge second contract here (not sure Bill would have given him 5/75 anyway) with the distraction of that weird incident (and distraction) during the playoffs in his last year here. We were all hoping that BB would find a way to keep the big 3: HT, Jones, and Collins.

But it wasn't to be, and who can say what would have happened if the Pats had laid out the $$$ Jones wanted? It's better for him individually that he moved along, I think, because AZ lets him focus on what he does best and his numbers reflect that.

This is the saga of the Patriots for two decades - we've lost many great players, Thuney being the most recent, to contracts BB simply wouldn't match. You can argue about this one or that one, but to RainMaker's apparent dismay, it's really hard to argue with the results of that philosophy. i say with confidence that even the fans here who are half my age are never going to witness again that which we got to watch in Foxboro these last 20 years.

The idea that Jones was a bad trade for the Cardinals, or that he deterred them from winning, is about as moronic as it gets. The Cardinals made a good trade and got good value from Jones. The failures of the Cardinals were due to so many bad decisions in between, including the horrendous QBs they put out there.

But overall, I like that the big money was spent on Gilmore rather than Jones. They both cost about the same amount, but a shutdown cornerback is (a) much, much rarer than a big sack guy, and (b) makes a bigger impact on the defensive performance. For whatever reason, the market overvalues guys like Jones; the Cardinals still got a great player and it was a good deal, but basically, they hit best case scenario and I'd say he wasn't a huge asset from a cost/production standpoint but was still worth the money.

On the other hand, Gilmore was a huge asset from cost/production standpoint; I believe Gilmore's prime years. He set the market for CBs and, I think, was still significantly underpaid relative to other defenders.

It could’ve been real weed and I feel like it would’ve been less of a thing since we... all know they tokin.

I enjoyed him on the Edelman show. Very stoic.

It wasn't the near-weed itself that was the issue as much as it was his behavior afterwards I feel...

Also fellow SU alumnus so yes he’s cool.

‘14 defense was personally my favorite of all time. Revis, Browner, Jones, Ht, Collins (USM Eagles, brett farve went there too). Then the on to Cincinnati on top of that. And the butler pick (got kicked out of a CC also in MS for I’ll guess weed cause they did that a lot, but then day of the Super Bowl they put up a big poster of him in the dining hall). Nostalgic for me, good year.

You were probably too young to care for football at this time, but the 2003 defense blows them out of the water.

Oh no sir.

i remember 31-0 lol.

I was at my moms job preaching about it. It was on the cover of sports illustrated, some Dlineman returning a td.

then we paid them back.

favorite, not best. Lol.

It was Sam Adams. Yep, that game was a disaster with Lawyer Milloy rubbing that loss in the Pats faces.

I feared it was a redo of the 2002 season.

I don’t see Jones ever coming back to the Patriots especially if he is leaving the Cardinals over money. If the Cards aren’t going to pay him what he wants, do you think the Pats will?

And although Jones is a great player, he isn’t close to a Hall of Fame player. Just look at some of the DEs from the 70s and 80s who haven’t gotten in the Hall. LC Greenwood, Mark Gastineau, Joe Klecko (although he wasn’t exclusively a DE), Jim Marshall, Ed Too Tall Jones, and Neil Smith aren’t in the Hall and they were all better players in their generation of football than Jones is today.

Bill built his defense around HT. He's a top 5 guy when talking about important players over the last 20 year's. Wilfork deserves mention as well. 54 is a unicorn.
