Semi OT: Chandler Jones requests trade

If Chandler wants to retire a Patriot, I'm all for forking over a greenback and making that reality happen!

I know there's a lot of BC fans around, but Syracuse isn't that terrible.
North East college football doesnt do it for me.

Pro teams dominate that region where as college sports is King in the South and Midwest.

Orange Man Bad

Lets not diss the Orangemen, em I mean the Orange (because Orangemen was insulting to the Umpa Lumpas?)

Schools with the most Hall of Famers

Notre Dame (13)

Syracuse (8)

Plus the greatest athlete of all time in Jim Brown.

The Pats never should've lost Jones to begin with.

Except for a thing called the salary cap. Bill had to choose between Jones and Hightower. He chose the guy who doesn’t disappear down the stretch and wasn’t a liability against the run. He chose correctly.

There are fans who think the team a) can keep everyone and b) should keep everyone.

Jones was a more than fine as a player here. One can argue he should have been kept.

One can also easily argue Bill took the cap space Chandler would have consumed and he allocated it to Gilly and the picks to Thuney.

Additionally Bill filled his spot with Flowers.

Bill could not have played it any better.

I figured when they brought in JJ Watt Jones's days might be numbered. Didn't really understand it because Jones has been a better player and more durable over the last few years but I think Jones is looking for his last payday at this point and the Cardinals aren't looking to be the ones to pay him.

Thuney, Gilmore, and 2 Lombardis say hi.

I wouldn't argue with any of this considering the horse was so far out of the barn when BB acted. My only point was that Jones could've been extended way before his departure became necessary. There was ample discussion/speculation around that prospect here and elsewhere; I don't recall details of where things were with Jones' camp at the time. One thing we'll never really know is how much his off-field behavior entered into it.

Cardinals subforum? ;)

it was for a 2nd pick that ended up being used for Thuney & Mitchell. Cooper was just a throw in.
And $15m/year in cap space. Which was used to get Gilmore.

Bill made the right call on Hightower > Jones. Jones as an edge rusher/sack artist is overvalued by the market; Hightower as a versatile, but somewhat slow, linebacker, is undervalued by the market.

I’d argue that if they’d truly “sold out“ and ”gone all in” they could have signed both with cap maneuvering, but it’s off topic for this thread.

You cannot extend someone just because you want to, and even more importantly, there would be no reason for Jones to do that. He knew he was going to get someone to pony up the cash so he was playing out his contract. There was no incentive for him to take an early extension from the Pats.

Perhaps so, but extension deals can be struck to the satisfaction of both player and team. I wouldn't call it a fait accompli.

Theoretically everyone can be extended early. What we don't know is did Bill want to extend Chandler and it was Chandler who shut it down or vice-versa?

I remember CJ complaining how the Pats don't pay. Whatever. They pay when they want to pay and don't when they won't.

It takes two to make things go right. It takes two to make it out of sight.
