Taking Christian Barmore was a gamble.

Camera not getting his best side?

Never mind that, is the dude even paying attention?

So you guys who rip Bill for this pick.. Who would be your pick, and much would you bet on him having a better career than Barmore?

The biggest thing to watch is how Shelvin turns out, especially when Shelvin was picked using the 4th that we traded away.

.

Ah yes, we can identify if someone is paying attention to instruction by a photograph showing their eyes facing a certain direction. The only way one can listen and pay attention is by staring directly at the person providing instruction without blinking or glancing away at all, ever, at any point. If one's eyes face a different direction, even if just for a moment, they're not paying attention and are automatically declared a bust.

Hmmm, how is Barmore going to do in the conditioning run test? Does not look promising. Vince Wilfork passed but Ron Brace did not...so it will be interesting.

I swear Bill is saying something to the effect...

"Barmore...you listening to me? Hey (snaps fingers)....you ok?. Your eyeing the food table aren't you? You would not believe how good the veil is. And the chocolate cake is outstanding".
I’d feel much better if there were some organic Filet-o-QB on that table.

The test for DTs and OL is not as difficult as it is for other players

I think he'll pass the conditioning run, probably on the first attempt...

It's the other things that have me concerned.

Wow Howe wrote a great article on him, he’s only been playing football for 3 years?!! This kid had a huge ceiling.
That is very important to know to explain why some hardcore football guys don't understand him or the other way. Sapp is a terrible human being but I was curious about his narration of a meeting with Barmore. It was obvious to me that they could not communicate. This may explain why.

Over at the Athletic...in the comments section of the Barmore piece...myself and some other folks made some Chuck Norris jokes. That's how good the Howe article was....per the article Barmore was a man amongst boys in high school and dominated so much at NT that he played like a MLB in the middle of the line. His team was something like 2-9 the year before allowing 30ppg...and went to 11-1 and 12.5 ppg the next year with Barmore (it's what I remember from the article).

From The Athletic piece:

Barmore, who will turn 22 on the first day of training camp, has as much room for growth as anyone in the Patriots’ draft class, relative to past experience.

“He’s not even touching the surface of what he is going to become,” Holmes {HS DL coach] said. “That’s the part I’m going to sit back and enjoy watching. His ceiling is so high. It’s definitely going to be special.”

When did we last have a high end penetrating interior lineman? Not saying he's going to be Wilfork, just that some interior pressure goes a long way to disrupting QBs. Indeed interior penetration is was what Brady had most trouble with.

Seymour was the last one, but he played end a lot

Barmore is actually both a bit heavier and a bit quicker than Seymour was at their respective pro days.

This piece was from before the draft - pretty interesting.

With his first 15 first-round picks as Patriots head coach, Belichick used one third of those selections on defensive tackles.

Haynesworth, but we all know how that played out

Got him for cheap after his back injury and it didn't work out - unclear how much was his back injury, how much was his effort/attitude and how much was him not being a fit in performing his assignment instead of doing his own thing.

Mostly you don't get highish-end interior guys on the cheap. Adam Butler was an exception as a decent player that was undrafted. About a third of Belichick's first round picks have been on the interior of the DL, so he's prepared to pay up.

With his potential, age? A long, long time. Run defense was a concern coming out but his real potential/upside is in his pass rush imo. He's still so raw there and can get so much better. I'm not worried about run defense. He's too talented not to be a very good all-around player but I'm most excited about his pass rush skills improving. He could be a game wrecking piece if he hits.

I'm also excited bc Bill had to have a long talk with Saban and feel good about this pick.

Sure he’s a risk. About half the first rounders don’t pan out for one reason or another. Aren’t they all risks?
