Trade up now or wait

We should have paid the price.

Thank God that you and the rest of the posters here who would have paid what San Francisco did to move up to 3, or want us to trade up to 4 for a similar cost are not running the show in Foxboro. In my opinion that was WAY too much for any of the guys who will be available. Lawrence is close to a sure thing to be an elite starter but the next four guys, while very talented in different ways, all have major question marks. Two of the guys have one year of elite college production against weak competition and another was supported by some of the best surrounding offensive talent over the past decade. Fields has the second best résumé behind Lawrence but has just as many detractors as he has proponents. Three first round picks for a QB who MAY pan out is crazy.

If they stay put, they will likely get a day 1 starter at 15, someone who in most years would never make it to 15, then take Mills at 46 and trade for Minshew to compete with Cam and hope that Mills is the real deal who will be ready to take over in 2022.

Fields does not fit either of those descriptions

no way fields has as many detractors as proponents or he would be a 4th round pick. I doubt there is anyone at all for example saying he isn’t a first round talent.

Let me ask you this way. If taking mills at 46 and trading for a scrub was a good plan why do teams every single year pick the few best QBs at the top of draft and any one who wants to trade up pays a fortune?
Who is the last QB needy team to say the best QBs cost too much so I’ll take the 6th or 7 th best and have that work out? Then I will ask who is the last team that had a run with one if those QBs that you would be satisfied with.
Yes compared to other players QBs are ridiculously overpriced. But you can’t win without one. This is what they cost. The alternative is to try, and fail, to win with crap at QB.
The fact that teams are willing to take crappy players that play qb in the mid to late first round doesn’t indicate drafting a QBs is stupid, it indicates you need to get to the point in the draft where the good ones are still there and it surely isn’t 46.

You can't be passive here. If you wait too long, the type of QB BB wants may well be gone.
Hear, hear!!!!
Cousin Lynch took th bull by the balls and got it done. We were very brave during free agency....and yet now is not the time to regress.
If the Patriots do not understand, we can all explain it here.

Dear Patriots.
The following Teams will attempt to move up to get a QB:
Panthers
Broncos
Bears

And Perhaps
Washington
Steelers
Saints

Their whole goal here is to circumvent you. That means they will make an offer immediately, if not sooner. So in light of the major transactions yesterday, they have set out to trade for the obtained desired position. They understand that if they bring their offeres to the table now, any Team that has the vision of moving up in this conscription venue contest has the advantage over those who have defecated the sleeping area and waited with smiles on their faces in Foxborough

In consideration for this potential movement to gain positioning in said 2021 NFL Draft (a conscription venue meant to fill or replace roster personnel positions on your professional football squad done in a round robin format via previous year's record from worst to best) one must remove one's head from one's anal cavity.

These slots are tradable. One Team might make and agreement with another to Trade up for a more favored slot. Both Teams agree and the slots swapped are thus assigned.

BUT....... these transactions are based on a first come, first served basis....... and the only advantage to wait or gamble, while other Teams are vying for those same slots, is to look cool.

Alas, more than likely you (the addressee here) will have blown said opportunity. But not to worry, one can always inform the Fan base who pays your bills, that you did not want "so and so" anyway. "He wasn't a great fit in our system" or the famous "not a good value". Cousins , we are not talking frozen orange juice futures (Trading Place circa 1963)

There is not one advantage to waiting. Make your trade and relax (see Jeff Carson, Draft Day circa 2014) rather than scramble in Cleveland at the Draft in April.

But , what do I know.

nah...Cam is the answer. Take the monster tight end with 4.4 speed at 15. The Pats will ground and pound and dink and doink the rest of the league to death

The only way we don’t is if belichick is happy with any of the 4, in which case he has to go get the Atlanta pick.
Trading up to any other spot has to wait now.
While I agree, there will be tough competition for #4 from CAR and DEN.

Stay and draft Surtain, Horn, Parsons or Collins Future #1 CB or #1 LB could fall into their lap. Which will be a need in a year. Whether it be Gilmore and/or JC Jackson gone or Hightower with his contract being up after next year.
and then be committed to not having much interest in the playoffs this year or probably next?

Back to my original question, better to do it now or wait? Waiting let the 9ers jump in.
Interestingly we need a QBs way more than they do and they made the trade.

San Fran paid a fortune to Jimmy G and now apparently doesn't want him. How are ya'll making sense of that so that the outcome is that he'll be good in NE but wasn't in SF? Curious.
c'mon the logic is clear

SF is paying Jimmy $25M a year and decided that he just isn't worth it as their future QB. Poster here believe that SF is very wrong. The details are really unimportant. If the patriots are interested in Jimmy, they can negotiate with SF and give them a 2nd or even #15. There are no higher bidders this year, but SF can wait.

There would be a restructure and we would be paying Jimmy $25M a year for five years plus another $1M salary for year 1. Jimmy has little to say. The cap hit would be $6M

BOTTOM LINE
Do we really want Jimmy as our QB for $25M a year. The reality is that we would NOT be committed beyond Year One, but could keep him as long as we wanted.

A SUGGESTED STRATEGY
1) Trade a 2nd for Jimmy
2) Draft a QB (I would still trade up and get one of the top 5). The likelihood of a 2nd rounder becoming a top 10 QB is low.

Back to my original question, better to do it now or wait? Waiting let the 9ers jump in.

Trade up for #4 now, if it can be done. I would also keep the 2021 2nd to negotiate with SF for our bridge quarterback.

How did waiting let the niners jump in. The highest we could move up was 4. Moving to 2 and 3 were out of the question. You have to be of the belief that 4 of the 5 qbs will work out before making that deal.

your point?

Of course, we would need to believe that at least 4 quarterbacks are acceptable to trade for #4.

Seahawks picked Wilson in the 3rd round (6th QB overall) after just signing untested Matt Flynn to 3yrs/$19m (and Tarvaris Jackson wasn't the answer). At the time they were hoping for Tannehiill at pick#12. Heck Foles was picked 7th QB that year (and Vick was there but he wasn't exactly lighting it up), but that draft was an... aberration... for the league.

My point is it doesn’t matter if we made the move to 4 it still opens the possibility of a team jumping to 3 to grab a qb we may have wanted, which the niners ultimately did.

Lawrence, Wilson, 1 of Lance/Fields are already off the board

That leaves 1 of Lance/Fields who will be gone by 8 or 9

So that means either trading up to 4, 5 , 6 or 7

4- how much will the Falcons want to move back 11 spots? too much, Panthers & Broncos are both top 10 and could very well take a QB, so it would be much easier for Falcons to trade back 5-6 spots and pick up a couple of draft picks. Now you could probably argue Falcons probably wouldn't trade with the Panthers

5- same situation with the Falcons even though I think there is less chance the Bengals trade out

6- they just moved up to this spot, so I doubt they are trading out

7- the only chance but again Pats at a disadvantage if Broncos or Panthers want a QB and their guy is still there.

and don't say Mac Jones, just another product of Alabama's stacked offense just like Tua.

I'd rather trade for Garoppolo, Minshew or Mariotta than draft Mac Jones.
