ahhh, oooo. I’d much rather we’d have put a higher tender. Bill is dangling him out there. I think a team would give up a 2nd for him.

Not sure what the cost difference between a 1st round and 2nd round tender is, but I thought for sure he'd be a 1st as well. Pat still have a chance to match any offer he gets, so perhaps they're thinking is teams won't break the bank for him AND give up a 2nd, but there are teams out there with the resources to do it. Would hate to lose the kid, he's a baller.

I’m unsurprised. This is what I thought might happen. Something tells me BB is less enamoured w JC than many of us.

Personally, love the player. Effort, available, picks... all from an UDFA ? I think BB sees it that way as well : great pickup. But, how many times was he not on the field ? Like, if he’s destined for #1 CB, why wasn’t he on the field at a 90%+ clip ?

I think BB will be fine either way : (1) keeps a solid piece who’ll play all out wanting the big contact (2) take a 2nd rounder for a guy who was going to command major cash next offseason and lose him for a comp...

I’d love to have JC here longterm. But I’m getting the sense BB doesn’t believe it’ll happen.

On 3rd and 4+ I agree. But on 3rd and 2? 3rd and 1? You need beef in the middle to prevent them from just running for it.
I’m talking base D. Yes in short yardage and goal line you use more DTs.

I’m saying our base D on 1st and 2nd down is 2 DT
4 lb/de
5 dbs

Our depth was just that good. We had the luxury of not having to play anyone after Gilmore wire to wire. I also think a #2 CB is worth a 1st round pick, considering there are 3 starters at that position.

I agree, for sure. I was more thinking of all the times last year that it felt like we were in those short yardage situations (in fairness, due to our overall inability to stop the run on 1st/2nd down), which against mobile QBs is a nightmare to stop. But hopefully with an improved run D, we're in those situations less and less between the 20's.

There is depth in this secondary. I would want them to keep good DBs, seeing as how impossible it is to stop great passing O in today’s league. But, while I know neither is perfect, NE could actually run two “lines” that are intriguing :

JC-DMac-Chung-Gilmore
Bryant-Mills-Duggar-JJ

Sadly, I think Gilmore will be moved (I just don’t see him showing up for 7M$) and I’ll be curious to see what Chung has left in the tank w age+a year off...

Jackson's problem is that while he makes plays, he gets roasted by the top WR's. And it has nothing to do with him taking chances, he just flat out gets beat.

Well he is an early down NT or heavy 3 tech. Two down mostly which we badly needed. Guys were excited to finale get a NT
God is a tremendous upgrade in run defense who you can’t expect much from as a pass rusher
Butler is weak against the run but a better pass rusher.
each team likes their move because it’s what they didn’t have.

You believe BB was “giving JC a breather” for JMac ? Young Buck playing once a week ? I think that despite limitations, JMac was trusted to do the right thing whereas JC was maybe a bit of a risk taker. My two cents.

It really wouldn't surprise me if both JC and JMac had similar overall grades from the coaching staff despite drastically different player profiles.

Thank God he will be on IR by week 4

Low risk high reward with green. Want to see the money details.

How much of it is Bill looking at this player strictly as a commodity? Undrafted free agent, upgraded to a 2nd round tender. I'd wager he looks at this as a win, and has a plan to replace.

JC is in awkward territory for a BB defense. He’s a historic playmaker at the position in the mold of Samuel & Cromartie. However, he hasn’t shown the ability to lock down #1 WRs.

Here are some of the CBs across the #1 CB recently:

2018-2020 JC Jackson on an UDFA rookie contract next to Gilmore
2017 Malcolm Butler on an RFA 1st round tender next to Gilmore
2015-2016 Logan Ryan on a rookie contract next to Malcolm Butler
2014 Brandon Browner on a mid-level contract next to Revis
2012-2013 Alfonzo Dennard on a rookie contract next to Talib

History shows he’s not getting double digits to be a CB2.
