Do the Pats go big and trade away a lot of draft picks for Watson or Wilson now?

From what I have seen/read Russell Wilson's main difference with Pete Carroll is that the Seahawks don't wan't his input into how to run the offense. That was also one of Brady's main differences with BB. If BB didn't want Brady's input, I really don't think he is going wan't to get pointers from Wilson about what they should do.

Yeah, but Wilson's issue is that he feels they don't invest in the o-line and it is getting him killed. That wouldn't be an issue with the Pats because they typically make having a solid o-line a priority.

I still don't think there is any realistic chance that the Pats will trade for Wilson, but I am not sure he would have the same issues with the Patriots.

This is exactly what Daniel Jeremiah thinks the Pats are up to...

It would explain the Cam Newton signing too. If whomever you get this year is a 1 year commitment. Spend $3.5million cap space on a guy who already has some familiarity with your system and buys in. The difference between Cam newton at $3.5million and someone at $10million is another piece for the Rookie.

Also doesn't hurt to have a rookie learn from Cam Newton

Texans just signed Tyrod Taylor which could be a precursor to them trading Watson.

They will get a good pick in the draft in return from most likely Miami.

The irony is that if the Texans trade Watson to Miami is that they would get their own pick back in return. Miami's #3 pick is the Texans' pick they traded to them for Tunsil.

I think people gotta accept the fact that Belichick really thinks highly of Cam. I can see them drafting a QB, but i doubt he's gonna be the starter for this year. Belichick is running it back with Cam and a loaded roster.

Anyone with a good read on Wilson - would he fit the short pass system of the Patriots? I know he's talented as hell, I just remember his deep game the most

Anyone with a subscription who could give us cliff notes about how exactly Howe thinks we could convince the Texans to sell to us ?

It must be either something very dumb or very creative.

He doesn't say anything useful...just that the Pats have $35-40 million dollars of cap space (which I don't think is true) and that their latest moves may convince Watson to approve of a trade here. The key word is "may." He's guessing the Pats being aggressive so far in free agency means they'll be aggressive or at least inquire into Watson.

Patriots are operating in Free agency as if they are about to have a QB on a rookie contract for 4 years. See Kansas City and Seattle in their superbowl years.....

it almost seems like they are addressing all these items in Free agency because they expect that they are going to use significant draft capital to trade up.

I still think Jimmy Garoppolo is an option as well. But the patriots aren't going to plan for him to be available this year because San Fran really has no incentive to release him this year yet. his dead cap hit is even less next offseason. So, if they really wanted to go into the season with Jimmy G and Trubisky and see who works out they could as well and Jimmy G will be out there next year.
I agree. The length of deals so far have been 2,2,3,3,4,4,4. The difference between rookie qb contracts and proven qbs is insane. I think Bill even had a hard time justifying paying the GOAT top money. The adjustment to rookie contracts 10 years ago opened up an opportunity that Belichick hasn't been able to take advantage of yet.

Put it this way... for the same amount of money, you can have either Russell Wilson or Henry/Smith/Bourne/top 15 QB.

I also think this time-line (4-5 years) coincides with Belichick wrapping up his coaching career.

I’d give up anything to get Deshaun (or Wilson too for that matter).

so, would the Pats have enough under the cap to take Watsons cap hit? Does not seem like a BB type move but he might be gearing up for a last run.
Yeah it’s roughly 10M.

Cam Newton is the Qb for the Patriots for at least 2021 and possibly beyond. You guys are kidding yourselves if you don't think Bill is going to give Cam another year with an actual offseason and NFL offense around him. Cam did not sign to NE to be a back up Qb this early in the offseason I promise you guys that. I don't care how much $ his contract is worth. Cam will put the work and effort in required to lead this team to the playoffs. Bank on it.

If Caserio moves on for Tyrod, I am glad he is gone, and I'm really not glad that he is gone.
Tyrod man, I think I've watched him more than anyone on this board; I watched him weekly for a year. I can think of no other QB that is more late on his throws in the NFL.

With all the FA signings most of them long term (3-4 years, which is long term in the NFL). The draft has suddenly become a luxury item for the Pats since they have filled most of their holes in their line ups, with likely more depth deals to be done over the next 3 months.

So the Pats COULD sit a 15 or there abouts and grab a REALLY good LB or DL prospect like Parsons, or Rouseaux with would add even more depth and talent on the D and continue to take the "best player available" and hope they can develop some gems the rest of the way

OR: they can say "screw it" lets go get a top 4 QB ( Lance, Fields) and do what you need to do to get to #7 in order to insure you get one of those 2 guys. Then it would be a perfect storm with the raw talent of Lance or Fields to sit for a year behind a good mentor who plays the same style of football and learn to be a pro. Then after a full year watching they will be ready to take over a well balanced team with a solid to great run game, solid skill positions, and an elite OL to go along with a top 7 defense.

OR they can say screw it and offer our the top 4 picks of this draft plus our #1 next year plus Cam Newton for Watson

The QB options, after this spending spree have just gotten wide open

Honestly? I would love Parsons at 15 and a QB to be groomed in rd 2.

After Mac Jones, there isn’t a franchise QB out there. Jones won’t get past #15 in the draft. Pure garbage after Jones. If they wanna get aggressive and take Parsons at 15 (who has some personality issues), I hope they trade back up into round 1 to get Jones.

I have seen Jones play in person. I do not view him as a definite franchise QB. I think he MIGHT turn out to be A solid game manager. The only sure fire guy in the draft at QB to me is Lawrence. The rest ALL have question marks of some kind.
Mond or Newman have as much chance at stardom IMO as Justin Fields.

Agreed

Do we really think Bill is going to do him dirty and toss him aside for Watson or Jimmy G? Last season clearly showed that Bill & Cam have a strangely close coach player relationship judging by the fact that he was putrid and he continued to stick by him and then proceed to resign him.

Only thing that makes sense to me is they draft a QB and have him sit behind Cam for part or all of the season depending on Cam’s performance. Trading up for the QB seems to be what makes sense.
