[Edited title] Patriots gave Andrews offer which did not "entice" him - but both sides want to get a deal done

interesting stuff here......projecting his market at 7.1 million......that's a no brainer if they can sign him for 7-8 mil
Ritchberg is also making $9M with the 49ers and he hasn't been that great there.

If Trey Flowers can break the bank, so can Andrews.

Bil
how far apart are they? What did they offer and what is Andrews looking for?
Bill offered him a 50% raise ($4.5M) and would allow him to punch Little Steven in the stomach, but only once.
Andrews wants $7.5M and to be able to punch Little Steven in the stomach three times throughout the season at his choosing and w/o warning.

So you would rather pay a middle of the road center with major health concerns top dollar? makes sense
Top $ for a center is $12M. No one is proposing he get paid top dollar. He should get paid in the top 15 though, given that he's the 2nd best center available. Even with all the cap $ available, Pats will cheap out and he'll walk. Maybe they get lucky with a rookie or bring in Karras.

So, according to you, the only options are Andrews at "top dollar" or a draftee. That's not the real world.

And if they do, he's gone. What would keep him here?
You do realize that many players speak glowingly of playing for belichick right? Andrews is part of SB Championship teams in this organization and understands they do things the right way.
What would make him want to leave?

If he is going to cost top 15 $$ they are better drafting a replacement.
Finding a smarter use for the money isn’t “cheaping out”.

The top two centers are Linsley and Andrews. Why do you think it's a bad market for those two?

The cap dropped by ~15M this off-season, half of the teams in the league aren't in position to bid on a center, and Andrews' original team has the 3rd most space. So, Andrews and Linsley are basically seeking big contracts from a HANDFUL of teams....supply/demand....yo!

So, we either pay him and keep some continuity at C or draft and hope the rookie pays off/ends up being something. I'm all for a known commodity, and if it costs 9-10 a year I'm paying it. Not sure losing Thuney and Andrews in the same FA is a great plan.

I just can’t accept overpaying because he’s the jag we know. I’d be a little more accepting if he wasn’t a year removed from missing an entire season and potentially ending his career due to a medical condition.

Here is some math.
Counting guys who play key roles like wr3 nickel back etc you have at least 28 “starters”. The other 25 players will take up amount 25 mill.
That means your average starter can get paid about 5.5 million.
Would anyone think all things equal, a C is worth almost double the average of all starters? What possible position is it worth twice as much as?
Add to that we are talking about a player who is at the most generous analysis an average starter. and he has health concerns.

There are about 1600 players in the nfl and and about 400 “starters”. What in the world makes David Andrews a guy that you would pay double what an average starter at any position receives?
I just don’t get it.

josh myers in the 3rd or 4th wouldn't be the worst thing......beast of a run blocker

amen brother! Best run blocking center in the draft and not bad in pass protection either. Day one starter for us and if onwenu and mason are the guards, then perfect for getting to the second level and blowing up linebackers.

we do not need to over pay for Andrews.

He is only 28 and pays a crucial spot on the Oline. He will get solid offers. The guys that will have a depressed market are the 30+ aged veterans.
We could argue “crucial spot” but the impact between an average player and a borderline starter at C is among the smallest.
I’d rather take the extra money and use it to upgrade the players I am adding at DT, TE, WR,DE/OLB than pay the kind of money people are talking about to have an average at best center.

Overpay does not mean what so many posters here at Patsfans.com seem to think it means.

Would be pretty surprised if Andrews got a deal with 10 million AAV on the open market given the year the league is in. 7-8 sounds realistic. If looking to keep him, maybe could incorporate higher guarantee money to get that number a little lower to around 6. Might be a little tougher to do though if thinking a 2-3 year deal and not as many years to play with.

Very true.

we have a finite number of dollars to spend and nothing or next to nothing at qb, wr, te, dt, de, lb and pk. And ps: our best cb probably will require more cash!

does spending 10 plus million on a center, when the last 3 centers we got, started almost from day 1?

If the market for Andrews is $12 AAV, the market is very unlikely to be only $14M-$15M for Thuney.
It definitely won't be that high. Linsley will set the value of what Andrews won't be able to command and I see him getting more than the highest paid C in Ryan Kelly currently at $12M.

Some random guy on the Jets makes $9M a year. Weston Ritchberg is making over $9M as well with the 49ers who hasn't been great since signing and may get cut. It doesn't seem that far fetched Andrews using his Pats pedigree to get someone to pay at least pay $10M.
