Devin McCourty: "I wouldn't mind........"

A really bad QB with serious worn tread, injuries and mechanic issues on a team with very little to catch passes... sounds like another recipe for success, aka 7-9.

You're explaining a few bad plays that happened. You people talk about him bouncing the ball as if he did it every other throw. I watched him do it 2 maybe 3 times at most. And if you don't think a supporting cast matters to a Qbs success then I wonder what it is you are actually smoking cuz it ain't good. You are legit trying to sit here and argue that someone throwing to a bunch of UDFA WRs should have the same success as someone throwing to pro bowl/all pro receivers do you have any idea how stupid that sounds? Like legit do you? It sounds like you don't know a damn thing about football
I am talking about how he played qb. Do we want to talk about the 3-4 times a corner sucked him into pucks because he can’t throw an out route?
He sucked. Blaming weapons is a loser move made by losers. It doesn’t matter who he is throwing to if when they are open he can’t find them or can’t put the ball on target.
It is comedy gold that someone defending that slug we watched embarrass himself for 15 games is critiquing other peoples football acumen.
Look we all know you have a thing for cam.
why not just wait until he signs with a new team where the fans haven't seen his suck up close and post there when they are optimistic. It should be great for you because there is no way he gets anything other than a backup job so it may be a long time before those fans will witness his suck.

I would be fine with a sub-par QB for 2021 provided they draft well for DL, TE, LB and Edge Rusher... Maybe not Cam but some other retread. I don't think they should reach round 1 for a QB.

Lol you really make this way too easy. Outside of Julian Edleman that was by far the worst receiving core Cam has ever had to play with and that is saying a lot. And it was by far one of the worst cast of WRs/TEs in the NFL for probably the last 10 years it was that bad. At least in Carolina Cam had Greg Olsen who was a perennial pro bowler/1k receiver. Who do the Pats have at TE? Exactly. Damiere Byrd was a ST back up in Carolina in NE he is the #1 WR is this a joke?

I mean you guys are so stacked on offense you got Qbs lining up out of the door just waiting to come play here with Meyers and Co. don't ya? Nope. You sure don't. You actually have people AVOIDING this place like a plague. Tom Brady had no business ever leaving the Pats he should have retired here, but the talent on offense is so bad he left you guys. Stafford put NE as the ONLY team he didn't want to be traded too I mean how many more examples do you need? No Qb that you guys could have brought in would have done much better in the same circumstances (month to learn the playbook, covid, talent deficient team) and your boy Bill knew that. He knew the only chance this team had at making the playoffs was Cam dragging this lifeless carcass that used to be the NE Pats to the playoffs. He couldn't do it and you people **** on him for it. Bravo.

You don't know wtf you are talking about TROLL.

BTW, Julian Edelman started out as a ST Back-up for the Patriots before working his way into the Pats line-up.

Stafford put the Pats as the only team he didn't want to go to because of Matt Patricia. It's WELL KNOWN that the two didn't get along during Patricia's tenure there. But why let facts get in the way of your trolling..

Cam was a hot turd in the Arizona desert when it came to passing. Cam wasn't dragging anything anywhere with how piss poorly he played.. You are living in the past.. Cam sucked outside of 2 games early on.

Teach him how to suck? Teach him how to lack any semblance of understanding a passing game? Teach him how to lack any pocket awareness at all? Teach him how to make terrible decisions?
Drafting a QB who will learn under a transition guy would be one of the strongest reasons to make sure that slug isn’t back here.

You didn't see one positive trait in Cam that you'd like to see in a rookie QB? I saw many. Great teammate. Good leader. Handles the media well. Works hard. Very competitive.

Who else would you want? Winston? JG?

What do you want to do? Bring in a cast off vet QB. Draft a QB?

I hope they draft a QB and sign a relatively cheap veteran. Cam would be perfect.

JG - too expensive, seemingly injury prone and imo is not the guy or a top fifteen QB.

Winston - relatively cheap and is a better QB than Cam but not a better mentor.

Watson - very very expensive. No way I'd want to trade a boat load of picks.

Anyway the idea is not as bad as you make it out to be.

What we're looking for from our 2021 QB:
- Throwing accuracy
- Pocket awareness
- Ability to quickly read a defense

He doesn't need to be the Best In The NFL at all 3, but it'd be nice if he were in the upper half QB group. I love Cam, but these things are not his strengths.

I still believe that Newton had a notable, common, and stubborn side effect of COVID: foggy brain. I said it last year; I know writers who had to walk away from the keyboard for months after their bout with COVID. They simply couldn't concentrate. I remember Newton even saying that things on the field looked "foggy" to him soon after his return.
As the season went on, he was missing reads, locking on receivers, and completely blowing blitz coverage and other defensive shifts.

I don't think that was all of his deficiencies, but I really think it made a difference.
This is what I’ve been wondering. There’s not a ton of reporting on it, but not many people are in a position where they have to process so much information and make a decision in a few seconds like an NFL QB. The quality of his play before and after COVID was drastic.

My problem with this is that it's semi addressing the QB situation. If you can't get Watson then why bother with an overpriced middle tier guy? Instead I'd prefer drafting a QB high and bringing in a relatively cheap veteran for mentoring purposes. Save the cap space and picks to build the rest of the team.

I wouldn't flip out if Cam was back, but it doesn't inspire much confidence in me. His leadership was great, no doubt. If the weapons improved drastically and commanded respect (and he is 3/4 of a year removed from COVID), I can see the case for improvement from him - even if he can't throw particularly well, he can hit guys sometimes, which opens more space for him to run and otherwise improvise. They wouldn't be Super Bowl contenders but they might be a playoff team in that scenario.

That said - it feels like a band-aid. He's probably not going to sign more than a 1-year deal, so you'd need to have some kind of succession plan in place. Being a bridge until 2022 when Mac Jones or someone else takes over, sure. Would Cam want to do that, though? And will Bill want to go through such a band-aid season or will he want to contend right away?

Come on Devin, stop trying to help your friend get a job here. He was a bad fit and he doesn't have it any more. You saw it like everyone else did.

I think you have to commit to one plan or the other. Draft the next franchise QB or sign the next franchise QB.

I prefer the drafting route. Which means, to me, signing a veteran mentor. I think Cam is the perfect mentor. He won't be expensive and has done everything except win a ring.

And if we're lucky he'll be better than his preseason-less, Covid season.

Basically the plan is to draft a QB high, get a mentor and build up the rest of the team.

Avoid doing Ram type of future killing craziness.

There's always Tim Tebow, ha J/K!!

Sorry, but the weapons won't matter ONE IOTA if CAM is back. It won't help with his horrible mechanics. It won't help him read defenses better. It won't help his shoulder be stronger. It won't help with his timing so he can hit players in stride. People whine about the receivers we had, but they were catching CAM's horrible throws pretty regularly. Meyers especially.. And I'm truly sick and tired of people thinking that a guy like Meyers is a JAG. As a 2nd year player who missed some time due to injury, he still put up over 700 yards with a crappy CAM... I lost track of how many passes he caught that made Cam look good. It was a BUNCH.

Meyers is rounding into form and I expect him to see plenty of action for whomever is the QB. He reminds me of David Givens. Someone who pretty much caught everything that Brady threw his way and was clutch for the team. Meyers should be a good #2/#3 type receiver. He has that level of talent. Contrary to MANY on here.

People like that new troll belittle players like Byrd and Olszewski as having been ST only players previously, but I have news for them. That's exactly how EDELMAN started out. It took him 5 years before he was a full time starter on this team.

Light it up with stidham and draft two qb projects in later rounds. Play all 3 and see who handles the pressure better . And if they all flop, we at least have a decent draft position to draft higher in 2022. Draft the defense well in 2021 and go all out on offense in 2022 .

The only hope I see is if mac jones drops in draft and we draft him in second round and hee lights it up in practice.

If all the good qbs and playmakers are out by 15, I wouldn't be surprised by Bill trading out of first round into second round and getting a 2022 rd1 pick.

Well I agree that the production wasn't there. But there's still a part of me that wonders what Cam would have looked like without Covid and with a preseason.

Even if the production stayed the same Cam's leadership seems infectious. I think it would benefit any rookie.
dude can't throw the ball

Kind of depends on other options. If we have to go all in to get a mediocre guy like Stafford then I'd rather have Newton on the cheap.
Most likely he'll be crappy again, but long term that may be better than going all in on a slightly better loser. There's also a chance that with a full recovery from Covid and pre-season and hopefully a couple weapons he'd be more successful.
I stopped reading after the first sentence. I will take anyone with the ability to throw a football over Cam. Period.

I wouldn't mind the Mccourty twins retiring

And how many Julian Edleman's are running around the league right now? You act like ST's players growing into good quality WRs is a common theme in the NFL when it isn't it is more of an exception than a rule. This is the type of stuff I'm talking about. It's hard to take any of you seriously when these are the replies. It's just a joke. How many teams make it a point to surround their Qbs with good weapons in the NFL? Every. Single. One. Take a look around at some of the other rosters. Hell, I'm sure there are college teams with more talented groups at WR/RB/TE. Go ahead and look NE is easily at the bottom of the league.

So why is it an asinine thought to think Cam could be better in this offense with an entire offseason with his teammates/playbook and some upgrades at key positions? Do you not think timing/chemistry matters between a QB and WR/TE? They had to work on that throughtout the REGULAR SEASON when it's something that is supposed to be worked on during the course of an entire OFFSEASON/PRESEASON. They didn't get to do that. The same can be said with learning the playbook. Cam had to think on his feet with a very limited cast of weapons rather than just reacting and playing ball because he was constantly trying to learn the offense and mesh with his new teammates last year. Are you understanding how football teams work now? I've tried to break it down in the simpliest of terms for you. I really hope it helps you in the future.
