Despite recent fancies of slang, things are not based "off" other things. They are based "on" other things.

Think of thing one as a foundation (the base.) Based on thing 1, you can add thing 2 to the argument.

I know there are a billion marching morons who are eager to destroy my beloved English language at every turn, and I'm tilting at proverbial windmills here.

But g** ****it, it's based on.

This will probably be about as successful as my campaign to discontinue the mispronunciation of "ax" (e.g., to ax a question) as "ask"

The worst is " could of" and " would of". Wtf does that even mean?
I dont call people on it but its truly moronic and makes the poster look like a clown.

It may have had a different meaning 1200 years ago ;)

Ok theres obviously some here who dont know better. Im not trying to ridicule anyones education level. I mean not all of us were fortunate enough to get past the 5th grade.
Its " could've" "would've" "should've".
They're called contractions, bruh.
And not the kind your sphincter has when you see those blue lights flashing in your rearview mirror and you realize youre heading back to the joint for a parole violation.
Smahten up.

No, Chaucer rendered that word "nether ye" (Although that only goes back as far as recognizable English... 1200 years ago? Holy Hrothgar.)

I'm not trying to ridicule how people learned to speak either, or for that matter, write... I just have an outburst every now and then. Usually I have my outburst when EVERYBODY starts doing something like "based off", although, yeah, "should of" gets me too. It's all good, I don't think I'm better than anybody. In fact, I am surrounded by **** I could not build myself, from my computer to my toaster to my TV. I'm a maybe on the gravity-fed coffee maker. All I actually do is words, really, so please don't think I think that makes me anything better than a plumber or carpenter or engineer who does his/her job really well. Well, maybe the engineer.

PS, by the way, with Kanye calling himself "Ye" all over the place, somebody needs to chaucerian diss-track him using "nether ye." That is all.

Everyone's bragging about their command of the written English language, but did anyone else get 800 on the writing SAT? Didn't think so.

There are a lot of clueless sports fans who based their opinions based off what they watch, read and hear.
Helpful little saying when grammatically confused ....

Based "on"
Jax "off"

(short for Jacksonville you dirty minded people)

Not bad. So are you a fellow brother in Mensa?

What's the actual benefit of Mensa, other than some bragging rights? Asking for a friend.

As for "based off", I tend to see that as a precursor to an analytical leap, because one could say you're "based off" a C-130 before a jump or a cliff before wingsuiting or basejumping. Usually, it signals a departure from the base. Most times, what follows "based off" tends to make a leap anyway, so I'm less bothered by that than "could of" or "could care less".

Seems to me from the few times long ago that I dropped in on some Mensa meetings the bragging rights are biggest, secondary benefit is the opportunity to socialize with folks pre-selected only on IQ. In other words no selection based on social skills, interests, or anything else. incidentally different local groups in different locales were totally different, reflecting the different individuals involved. But that was just after college, so many decades and hundreds if not thousands of miles from now.

or should I have said “Seems to me based off the few times...”?

Same could be said about your username.
Congrats, around 5 other people have pointed out tell me that over the past two years, usually after they've been embarrassed (like you), as if I wasn't aware. I still don't care.

I for one appreciate the name. It harkens back to the "no SB wins since Spygate" days. In SB 49 Tom and BB put that **** to rest. In SB 51 the rest of the narratives.
